AeroBaldness - 2009-07-22 8:01 AM I had the chance to race in the rain a couple of times (once in a heavy mist and once in a complete downpour).  Thought I share some advice I received & things I learned.

First, double up on the Body Glide and think of anywhere that would rub.  I still have some rubs from Anchor Bay 10 days ago.  Not much to say about the swim, other than you may have to site a little more with dark skies (I never swam at pink dinos, might be easier than orange & yellow buoys).  There are a few things on the bike:  Wear your glasses if you can, rain drops hurt like heck on the skin, even worse in the eyes.  Stay off the painted lane markers, etc, they are like ice on skinny tires when wet.  If you drop down to the bottom part of your bars on a road bike be careful of slipping.  My wrap became slick and cold wet hands were a bit tough to keep in place.  Ride on the higher side of the road, which is usually the middle section as vehicle tire will have compacted the two outside portions.  Even at three bike lengths back, you'll gat a ton of spary off the rear tire of a bike in front of you.  For the run, I go sockless.  If you wear socks, think about some Vasiline in the toes of the socks to avoid blisters with wet feet.  For transition, I'm bringing a rain coat to cover my shoes & mat.  A garbage bag would work as well.

That is all I can think of for now, anyone else have wet weather advice?

Good advice all around although I suggest not running barefoot unless you have done it before.  If you use technical socks (not cotton) you should be OK - but bodyglide the bajezzus outta all parts of your feet.

I raced at Muncie 2 weekends ago (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike - nixed the run) in a complete downpour - with lightening and hail.   While the course was very flat we had no issues outside of the pain from the drops hitting the skin.   ILRA is much hillier - so be careful out there tonight.

If you are unsure of how your bike handles when on wet pavement - just go slow.  It is better to finish wet and happy then it is to finish with a broke bike.... or self.

Catch ya on the flip side!

Awesome!  I saw everyone out there except Detroit Dan.  How did I miss you Dan?

It was a lot of fun and so far 2 for 3 triathlons in rain.  It was a blast!

Hope everybody stayed safe on that wet ride.  I saw some carnage but managed to stay upright myself.

Was an awesome race!  Saw runnergirl and Jason out there and got lots of love from Trish and Ranger - a big shout out to both of them for cheering us on in the cold rain.

Can't wait for RunningFit to post the results to see how I actually did.  The only thing that sucked was that when I went back to grab all of my gear to leave my bike shoes were missing.  Looks like someone ended up taking them - I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it was accidentally - so I'm off to BikeSport today to get a new pair.

Sorry I didn't get to meet any of you all last night, I'll have to learn BT etiquitte for future events (Tawas is my next Tri, RNR Chicago is my next event)!!!

As for last night, who invited all the fit people?  Geez, it was enough to make an undersized, middle age bald guy feel inferior.  Quick whine, my punishment for registering early was a lousy transition assignement.  I was stuck way over in the left hand corner (it was like school all over again), if you were facing the lake and was forced to face my bike towards the fence.  Nothing like (2) 100 yards dashes in road shoes.

Ended up 1:18 and change.  Only split available when I left last night was the swim at 16:10, my best 1/2 mile of the three this year.  I am not to proud to admit I braked on the downhill by that curve under the train bridge.  The bike CPU had me at 19.5 MPH, but I'd guess I was closer to 20 MPH as that would have included my dashes in and out of transition.  I need to rally support for a Mini Me Division instead of the Clydesdale.  My Kenyan sized frame gets hosed on the bike!  As for the run, I had forgotten my son used my Garmin on his bike for a kids tri last weekend, so it was set at MPH.  I was too tired to do the math, so I just ran.  I passed 6 to 8 guys in the Mid-Life Crisis Division (40-44) and dueled a guy in my group the whole way.  He outkicked my the last 50 yards.  I'd guess I ran 7:40s or so.

Great event, as always for Running Fit.  Those pita thingys with ranch dressing rocked.

LOL!! Ya, I'm in that mid-life crisis group   I didn't care too much for having to run so far with the bike. I wasn't about to try to mount it on the grass - figured that that'd be the one time I don't immediately hit the clip on my second foot and would topple over so I ran it all the way to the pavement.  However, it seems everyone around me  was doing the same thing so I don't feel so bad about it.

As for the bridge, I was hauling until 2 idiots who weren't racing (mountain bikers) crossed right in front of me. Had to apply lots of brake and yell at them to move it.  Don't think it affected my overall time too much though.

1:18 is a great time - congrats.  Not sure yet exactly what my time was.  I crossed the finish at 1:36, but I was in the "old guys who are still trying to prove the have it" wave so it was at least 15-20 minutes better than that.

Old guy my arse!  You're younger than me, and I'm just a baby! ;-)  O.k., a very well aged baby, but still!

Congrats everyone on a great night of racing!  BT RAWK SQUAD ROCKS!!!

DONE!  Chicago may be tough with 18,000 runners, but I'll be there with my 2 little triathletes to cheer you on at the HIM finish up there.  Tawas was my 1st tri last year and is an awesome set up all around.

I was there.  I got to figure out how to meet people at these things.  We had a screened in tent right near the finish line. My over all time was about 6 minutes faster than last time. BUT I TANKED IN THE SWIM!!!!. I was about 3 minutes slower. I was freezing standing there in the rain waiting for the old farts wave to start. I never thought swimming in the rain would be an issue.

I was part of the carnage. Had a great 1/3 of a race: third out of the water, of the orange caps. this was told to me by my spotter (GF). only got a 1/4 mile on the bike reached down to tighten my shoes hit a hole that turned my wheel and with only one hand on the bars down i went slid about 20ft on my back. road rash on every single appendage. my back is the worst full lenght on both sides. hit my foot pretty hard, so its really swollen today. bike needs a tune-up nothing major thankfully. You may have seen me walking back, Yellow and black uniform. too pissed off to stay and cheer. hope you all did well.

(third crash this summer 1. 16stiches in lower leg, 2. split helmet in half road rash on back, 3. discribed above.) Great Sport hahaha.

Man there were a lot of incredibly fast people out there last night.

Even though I'm very happy with all of my times (except my nemesis the swim) I ended up 24 out of 49 in my AG with an time of 1:21:54.  Overall I placed 129 out of 334.

I'm really happy with the bike ride - I hit an avg of 21.32 mph and that's even with the run up the hill out of transition.  The run I'm pretty pleased with too, I avged 8:16 miles which is good for me.  My swim....well, what can I say - I need Trish in front of me to pull me along!

cbs sorry to hear about your crash - hope you're not too banged up from it.

Race report is up -> Here

I'm very happy about the swim.
I had a horrible T1.
Calf troubles on the bike force me to dismount and walk for a moment to stretch it out.
An OK T2.
I'm a slow runner, so the run was ok.  I run alot faster than that in training, but need to do it in a race.

Overall I guess I'm happy about my time 1:31:12.  I'm in one of the most competitive age groups 30-34.

Good news, bad news.

Good news: I took 7.5 minutes off my time from June!! 3 minutes off the swim and 4.5 on the run. Nothing off the bike despite having a new bike.

Bad news: I still came in last in my AG.

Moral of the story? When I go out on Thursday to practice at IRLA, don't ask where the group is swimming to on the other side of the lake, swim 300 yards away from where the group is swimming to, swim to them and then swim back. After the swim when the guy on the beach says, "You sure got your monies worth out of that lake", YES I DID!! 3 MINUTES WORTH!

Now I just need my money out of my bike.

A crappy transition spot cost me a head to head victory with a buddy of mine (tiny violins, I know).  He now has me 2 to 1 this year.  I got him at Kensington, he got me at Motor City & yesterday.   Best 1/2 mile swim of the year @ 16:10, lousy bike at 37:09 and a good run at 22:59 for 93rd overall.  T1 was 1:19, T2 was 1:07.  I gotta get better on the bike.  Ended up 1:18:42 in total.
