Ooh, Bear, it's totally fun.  You'll love it.

Can we say the coolest triathletes do RAGBRAI?  Last year 2 or 3 of the guys on my team used it to train for IM Wisconsin.  They rode 100 miles, went for a run or a swim and got showered all before I made it into camp. Damn.

Ok, so next year, we have Renee, Bear and CindyK coming, oh and Shellee, right? RIGHT?

I'll try this one more time, then I give up and admit to being a computer retard:

Guess I'm too dumb. Anyway, it was a picture of me and pals in front of the MR. PORKCHOP bus!

I thought it was a requirement to eat pork or beef in order to be an Iowa resident?!?!?! A pic is one thing...did you actually eat it?

With a username like Hawkeye, you know I've done it.

In 2003, I made the journey with 10,000 others across southern Iowa or "The Devil's Washboard."  You think Iowa is flat?  That year there was 16,000 ft of climbing...and 17,000 ft of descent but what goes down had to go up first.

I had planned on doing it again in 2004, but the Army had different plans.  My wife and I are planning on doing it in 2006.  I think we'll still be in the Southeast so anyone from down here who wants to come along is more than welcome to ride with us.  It is certainly a hoot!

I heard 2003 was tough, then last year was I think the 8th flatest year ever (my first, good choice).  However, the first day had has some brutal climbing. This year, also very very flat, I think the 5th flatest.  Most climbs are in day 1 or day 7 (darn river valleys). I worry about my lack of hill training this year. It's a ride, not a race, a ride, not a race (repeat, repeat). Hawkeye, you could be in for some hills next year!

So, for those of actually going this year... We only have half a plan.  We'll meet up on Sunday at the bevvie garden in Sheldon. I'll shower before I head over, which will be dinnerish time (5:30-6 perhaps?).  Do we want to set a time? Then, we have to be able to actually identify each other among thousands of our best friends.

Please, I'd love to have my resident status revoked! As soon as I figure out where I want to live, I'm surrenduring it voluntarily.  Sad to say, I did take one bite!  I never really ate pork, I always thought is was kind of nasty, but I got carried away....what can I say? Actually, it's not really that dramatic, since I did not make the change until last August. That's why that picture cracks me up so much now!

Can someone find me that picture of the Goddess that was the patron saint of the Gear Goddesses?  Since my friend sranney has dubbed me the Goddess of the Iowa Cornfields, I want to print her off and stick her to my bike helmet as my identifier. But she's lost! Waaaaa.

And if 6:00 works for Jodi, it's fine with me....although I make no claims that I will shower first.

having grown up in IA, I miss RAGBRAI. I loved riding and being part of the communities the bikes road through and overnighted in.

My hometown has been ride though point in at least 4 previous RAGBRAI's and it is again this year! It is a little spot on the map called Granville (pop. 200). You guys will be making a left hand turn right from L-22 to Hwy 10 and passing one of the best high school baseball fields in the state of Iowa. The team is a long time power house in IA high school baseball. The team has been to the semi-final round or above for the last 15 years. The have won the title many times during those fifteen years. Iowa had a one division fall baseball league until the early 80's Spalding won the title against the larger schools several times. And, has some of the most devoted fans, parents, and players I have ever come across. I am particualrly proud )not that you can't tell) of the fact that my relatives are involved in so deeply involved in the program. My cousin, Dave, is the coach. My brother and and other relatives are key members of the booster club. My cousin, Randy, recieved an award from the high school athletics association for his work and dedication to high school baseball in the state.

And, on the 2nd last day, the ride will take you through hilly country where my early relatives moved to the United States from Germany. It is full of my relatives...trust me. It is beautiful country though.

Sorry to brag on but these are my peeps and my home. As much as I love where I'm at, I do miss the simpler life I had when I lived and worked there. Give a shout out to all my family and friends as they support you. Have fun and be safe! Plenty of water to go along with that beer!!!

Well jeepers, Jodi - the beautiful blonde part just totally cancelled out the smells like a pig part! See how shallow I am?  When do I get to see pics of you two?  I only posted mine because I dared bear and he took me up on it, so I couldn't back out because that would be unsportsman like.  But hey, as long as I'm out there.....

Actually, I'd be more than happy to bathe, but since I don't know where we will be camping yet (we are not camping in the overnight campgrounds, but on our own), I don't know how many miles away it would be to have my husband come pick me up, take me back to the camper so I can shower and change, and bring me back to the bevvie tent for our booze fest first (annual?) BT meet and greet! The good news is, the entire state stinks to high heaven, so I really don't think I'll be able to exceed the natural aroma of things....at least, I HOPE not!

I will try and remember to post tomorrow. At work - no pictures and tonight is my daughter's B-day party. Tomorrow is much more likely.

Just kidding about the "smelling like a pig part" I rode the other night (103 degrees - 25 miles) and came home smelling less than wonderful. I was glistening from all the sweat and my kids came running up to me and hugged me. They promptly released and said "Ewe Mom, you are all sweaty." Well what did you think, I was just naturally glowing?????? Geez!!

So come one, come all, sweaty or not, I don't really care. Doubt I would even notice.

Cheers,
Jodi

I always chase my little boys around the house, post workout, threatening them with "Sweaty Hugs!" They run and giggle and go eeeeewwwww, but I know they secretely love it.

I'd be interested to hear about your RAGBRAI logistics and accomodations, maybe I can start planning for next year. As much as I enjoyed camping in my youth, I'm much more of a motel guy these days. But, I can adapt.

A few things to note: RAGBRAI is always held the last full week of July. Register early...if you aren't in by April 1, you likely won't get a full week rider pass, but daily passes are still available, you can get up to 3 days. They hold a lottery for week long wrist bands and if you aren't in by April 1, you aren't guaranteed to get in.  Actually if my memory serves me right, they didn't even accept all riders registered by April 1 this year.... Also, 1500 support vehicles get passes (busses, vans, cars).  Larger groups are more likley to get vechicle passes are are allowed onto official campgrounds.

We have about 15-20 people on our team, and we use an old school bus as our SAG wagon. The first year of the bus, they rigged up racks in teh back half for the bikes.  Last year, we got a deck that will mount the bikes on top of during travel and also we have huge blue tubs that hold water for a shower.  Other than that, we camp in RABGRAI camp grounds.

It is possible to try and stay in hotels, but as soon as the route is announced they get booked.  I don't wonder if the Register staff get a heads up and take them. Also, overngiht towns have options to request housing that allows you to stay (or camp?) in a residents home.  All those applications must be in usually by July 1.

Ooh, talking about it makes me look forward to it even more!!  I'll be in my supergirl tank top one day, as well as my riding buddies!  Look for as the free beer places.

This is great!  I have been to West Union and Guttenberg, but none of the other towns. I'm really looking forward to it.  That's one of the very best parts of this for me....going somewhere I've not been before.  I think people would be surprised to see how "into" our young athletes we are around here....that's probably why we have some awesome HS athletes in this state, we put our heart into it, big time!

Rabgrai in a camper?!?%&$ Just kidding.

My husband and I both grew up in Iowa and for our 10th anniversary last year we rode and tented it the whole way across the state - loved it. Reminded me of our early years of backpacking. This year we may break down and buy a inflatable air mattress for a little added comfort.

I think one of the best things about the ride is being "unplugged" for a whole week....no t.v., no cell phone (coverage was limited last year, but mostly on the western side) no commitments, other than to make it from point A to point B, no one to care for (speaking of my children - will miss them though), all the great people, bikes rule the road, okay that was more than one thing. Guess that's why we are going again.

We have a smallish team - 4 full week riders and 5 half week riders. The organizer of our group has a 16 y.o. son w/cancer and this is one of his dreams - to be part of Ragbrai. He won't be riding, but he is considered one of our "support crew".

For those of you not going - send the "cool weather vibe" our way!!! We will need it!!
