When I am running my traps get really sore after a mile or so. Any suggestion on what is causing this and possible changes to my technique? I jog with my arms at a 90 degree bend at the elbow.

Today was my 1st day back working out after surgery last Friday. I am taking it slow!

 Thanks!

What kind of surgery did you have?  Without seeing your running form it is hard to tell.  I'm no expert but do you run with tension in your arms/shoulders?  If so, try to relax the upper body and not be too stiff.  Hope this helps.

I had a vasectomy. Ouch, I know!

I will focus on relaxing my shoulders. I had a nice swim today. 600M total. I was please with my breathing. I focused on breathing every 3 strokes and alternating sides to get air.

I hope everyone else is doing well in their training!!!

Well guys, I was able to beat me last years time of 1:45 to 1:39!  I felt great!  It was the first time I actually felt like I was racing (at least for a big guy).  I pulled a 27:26 for the 1st 5K, averaged 17.5 mph on the 12 mile bike and posted a 28:34 on the 2nd 5K.  I wanted to beat 1:40.  Check out my race link.

I also won the raffle of a free entry to another triathlon/duathlon this summer!

All in all, a very good day.  Now I can't wait for another one!

All I have to say guys is get out there and enjoy it!

Hey Brian, thats fantastic!

Now you've got me all pumped I wish I had a triathlon that was coming a little sooner. All though then I wouldn't be able to train and that might not look so pretty!

Hey all!
My next event is June 7th--a sprint. The problem is that I will not be doing any open water swimming before then. It is difficult when there were ice bergs in the water last week and snow still on the ground....IN APRIL. At least it is starting to warm up and have been out running and biking. How do you go into an open water swim without having put on your wetsuit without crying ( I know you boys don't cry, but I have no dignity when it comes to swimming).

Next question: How do you get back into training when you have had time off due to Mexico or illness. I'm finding it hard to focus. Any pointers??

Congrats, Brian, good job!

Happy Monday!!

Thought about the pool thing but wasn't sure about the wetsuit. I love dorkiness and have only a slight problem being a huge dork, so OK. If anyone needs a good laugh I will be at OZ fitness Friday at about 7pm .

My next (and probably only) is on August 24, so still faar awai.
There's not enough sprints here in Belgium, only 2 that I know of...

There are some olympics, but it's like going to a Rolling Stones concert and trying to get tickets. In Bruges, I thought the first lot was completely filled after half an hour or so...

Triathlong is growing faster than the number of people who're organizing them

Non planned this year

I'll try to get one or two 5K fall runs in this year. A local cycling club has thursday time trails that I'm going to try to get in on. (I now a hybrid right now) and I'm trying to get with the local university's tri club which has coached swims.

Next year I plann on two sprints, the Quad Cities Triathlon around June 12th and at least one other flatlands tri.

I have a very mini triathlon on June 15th, I'm trying to get my friend into Triathlons so he agreed to do this very small one (250 m, 4 mile, 1.4 mile run) Then I have a sprint in Philly on July 13th. Then two olympics later on in August and September. I really need to get a schedule together and start training but as of now I don't even have enough time to sit down and eat a bowl of cereal!

Hi all,

I have something weird happening to me. Usually, I only run on soft surfaces. But whenever I run on concrete, or another hard surface, my calve and shin muscles start to tighten up after a while.
After running for another kilometer, the feeling disappears, but I wondering why this happens.

I know it's not shin splints, and it's not realy cramps either. Verry strange

I guess that it could be the muscles are not comfprtable with the hard pounding from the concrete. Once you run for a while, you muscle memory gets use to the pounding and starts to relax. I am no expert on this, but that would be my opinion.

On another subject: Does anyone get hand cramps when swimming? I am getting cramps from cuping my hand when swimming more than 700M. Any suggestions, besides relaxing my cuping.

Where are you getting the cramps when swimming?  In the hand itself or...?

i've been out of commission for about a week and a half because I hurt my back.  Weird thing is I wasn't doing anything.  Just woke up and couldn't do much.

The cramps are in my pinky and ring ring finger only on my right hand! Which is the weird part...

Hmmm....I'm certainly not an expert and without seeing your actual stroke I'm not sure.  Not sure why just those fingers although I would guess it would have to do with your hand position.  As far as only one side, more likely than not it has to do with the fact that your stroke is unbalanced.  Everyone typically has a strong side when you are swimming (easier to breathe on one side) and it is not uncommon to put more strain on one side or the other (either compensating with the strong arm by pulling harder to make up for the other side or forcing the weaker arm to pull as hard as the strong side when it's not as able to do so).  It might not hurt to do some drills with a moderate pull and have someone watch what's going on with your stroke.  It's hard to self-diagnose (at least for me).
