But yes the gun debate is a hell of a hornets nest here.  I guess some people are victims waiting to happen and rather put their life into the hands of the person attacking them and hope they will just take their money and run and leave their life intact.  I'm just not one for letting someone else make that decision for me and rather have some say in it.

But those people are also the same people who think that if you crash and drop your gun it's going to go off Rambo style and fire bullets in every direction despite you'd have a better chance of getting a nuclear warhead to go off by hitting it with a tac hammer.

Or some people think that everyone is out to get them.  I prefer to take the odds that if out of the 1,000,000 people out there it's my time, then I will deal with it.  Smartly and prepared.

ATLsbr - 2009-08-03 9:29 PM I threw a 44mag in my camelback before and ridden with that.  And I borrowed a friend's shoulder holster with a 454 casull one time while on a bike in the mountains.  I was just riding from one point to another to go fishing but bears have come out while fishing so I kept a large pistol on me incase it wanted my trout.  That was a little uncomfortable but it was a big and heavy revolver too.

If you do ride then carry it on your left side if possible so it is visible.  One thing people know is that people are crazy and if they see your pistol they are less likely to see if you would happen to just whip it out and light their vehicle up despite the odds of you actually doing it are very slim.  And remember that MAD is a very powerful defense.

thanks for the advice, i never thought about carrying it on the left side. Open carry is allowed in Ohio, but I've heard of people getting charged with disturbint the peace if people get freaked out cause someone is carrying...

I have a few bits of advice for you, one is more important than the others.
1.  If you feel you need to carry while riding, I don't blame you btw, get a smaller/ligher gun, something like my Kel-Tec PF-(9mm) or the even smaller P3AT(.380) will serve just fine.

2.  Don't carry your gun in a bag, or any other item, that can be separated from you.  I cold tell you a crappy horror story about someone who got raped at their own gun point for a good reason not to.

3. Most importantly in my opinion, don't EVER carry your gun in the small of the back.  If you wreck for any reason and land on your back, the amount of damage to your spine will be tremendous.  For that matter I would never carry something that hard and unforgiving at the small of my back, I like the use of my legs way too much to take that chance.

Why carry?  A few years ago a coworker was running in a nearby park.  The multipurpose path was not yet plowed so he was running on the side of a lightly travelled road inside the park.  A car comes from behind [he was not running against traffic, since there was none], swerves and clips him with the mirror.  They continue driving, runner picks himself up and resumes running.  A half mile down the road, there is the driver and car parked in a pullout.  As my friend gets closer, the driver starts swearing at him (and all runners) and running toward him with an axe handle.  He escaped with a few blows to the head and shoulders.  Sadly, he did not get the license plate.

The first right is the right to live.  Without that the others are kind of meaningless...

Wish I lived there right about now.  These people scare me.  Remind me never to be rude to anyone at a race because it sounds like someone who carries when hanging out with friends would likely be carrying in a race.  BTW do you carry it under the wetsuit or strapped to the outside.  Just a lefty here who has never fired a gun, and likely never will.

That being said, I've had a couple of crashes on my bike where I stayed clipped into my pedals during the whole ordeal. If i am struck and end up on the side of the road, however it happens, and someone comes my way, I don't want to be stuck there with an unknown person approaching.

I can envision the modified version of Bob Stocks' IMLP race report...

"As I got to the steep part I saw something in the road and saw a few bikes ride by. As I got closer I saw it was a bike, looked at my speed and saw 52 mph and as I passed by I saw a lifeless body under the bike. "Oh crap!!" I thought, "I HAVE to stop!". I slammed on my brakes spun around and climbed up the hill. As I got closer I saw the person moving and was somewhat relieved.  But my relief turned to fear, when as I approached, he pulled out a gun, pointed it at me, and yelled, "Get the F*** back!!"

Since moving to Japan i've learned that Samurai Swords are much more aero than a shoulder holster.  Also they come in handy if your having trouble removing your tubular or if you just can't get that GU to open.

KSH - What... you were going to shoot out his tires as he drove off? Sure, if he came back to attack you and got out of the car, at least you would have a scare tactic to keep the guy from seriously hurting you... assuming he didn't have a gun. Here are the facts, some people in cars hate people on bikes. They are in cars. As much as we hate it, they can kill us... very quickly and easily... and pretty much get away with it. Our best defense is to be polite, stay out of their way and to jump into a ditch when the time comes.

Exactly!!

As I continued to read this thread, I started to actually realize that this isn't a joke...  I mean seriously, carry a gun while riding your bike? Seriously?

I live on Long Island,  which is probably the American capital of aggressive drivers, and I can honestly say that in thousands upon thousands of miles on the roads, I have never once thought, "man, I wish I had a gun with me!"

A few weeks ago, I was driving by a cyclist who fell and looked like he was hurt.  I stopped, got out of my car, and tried to help him out...  Thank God he didn't shoot me.

Where do you guys live that you think your life is in danger every time you leave your house?

I was thinking the same kind of thing after reading ATLsbr's post... guns are legal and I won't try to tell people they shouldn't carry them, but I hardly think choosing not to own one makes me or anyone else an automatic victim. This argument is getting dangerously close to "If you don't carry and get hurt or attacked, you brought it on yourself and you deserve it." - which is totally wrong.

I believe your argument is flawed.  While not carrying does not invite an attack, his statement didn't reflect that either.  The premise of his argument is that an unused fire extinguisher in your house presents a better preparedness than a person without.  The hope in both cases is that you never need it.  However, let me restate that in the case of an aggressive driver, I don't believe my firearm helps me.  In the case of an antagonist who who choses other means, it certainly does.  Since the OP was speaking in reference to an automobile only, I think we have gone a bit off topic.

Funny, people equate legally carrying a gun with being paranoid or automatically assume that the person is a loose cannon. They forget that almost all states require a state and FBI background check for a license and that even after receiving the license these folks are involved in barely a fraction of the crime non CCW adults are. For some people being prepared to protect themselves is no different from being prepared to change a flat tire on a bike.

The part about this thread that cracks me up is that that majority of the states allow concealed carry under some form or another. While you don't see or sense it, the American's here will probably pass someone legally carrying a gun at some point this week. It could be at the intersection stop light, they could be sitting next to you eating lunch or just passing by on the sidewalk. The only way you would be aware of it is if you were a grave threat to them. Those of you in countries with strict gun and carry laws, well you'll pass people who are carrying albeit far fewer, however they will all be felons so you are no further ahead.

BTW, for riding I'd just stick to fox labs pepper spray in a 2 ounce flip top stream can. It can be used on dogs and can come in useful if you get accosted by some jerk at an intersection. It's very effective and your are less likely to end up in court if you have to use it.

Statements like the below, I think, contribute to that sentiment.  It's not "funny," it's pretty logical, when I read "some people are victims waiting to happen, yeah, I think "paranoid."

Do you feel the same way in the helmet threads?  Just curious.  In those threads, the concensus is that if you are not prepared for the worst, you are a fool.  That includes slow family rides on flat rail trails.

No, I don't.  Reason being that this year alone, I have had four good BT friends involved in bike crashes.  I have had zero such friends involved in a situation where carrying a gun would have prevented, well, I don't know what... whatever the paranoid are expecting to happen, I guess.

Good analogy... wearing a helmet / carrying a gun.

I'm kinda surprised no one else suggested this.  I carry a can of bear strength pepper spray when I ride.  http://www.udap.com/Bearspecifications.htm.  Mine came with a harness that I can strap it to my chest.  I first bought it in case I was attacked by an animal on a mountain bike ride. But on request of my mother (she worries about me) I started carrying it in the city when I ride.  And I recently had an occasion to be glad that I did.  On a training ride a guy buzzed by me, honked and yelled at me.  This happened about 100 feet from a red stop light.  I caught up with him at the light and started jawing at him. (yes I know a mistake).  We yelled at each other until the light changed.  He then drove off.  I thought nothing of it.  Then about 10 minutes later he pulled up next to me with 4 buddies in the car.  They ran me off the road, got out of there car and came at me.  I busted out the pepper spray and gave each of them a healthy helping then called the cops.  They are all facing aggravated assault charges now.

Was I stupid for yelling at the guy at the light? Yes.  Would the pepper spray have helped me if he had just hit me with his car? No. Would I have gotten the crap kicked out of me if I didn’t have the pepper spray? Probably.  Did anyone end up dead or seriously injured because of my actions to defend myself? No.

As a person in the military that teaches weapons use and safety I say if you want to carry and it is legal to do so, go ahead.  My  personal reccomendation would be to carry OC Spray (10-12%) rather than a weapon.  It is not like you will be riding your bike and shooting over your shoulder, you wouldn't be using it until you are stopped and face to face with an assailant and in that case pepper spray would suffice and probably keep you out of jail in the process.
For those that say OC Spray does not work, I am a qualified Non-Lethal Weapons Instructor and would love, I mean be much obliged to spray you and let you feel in person that it does work.

I do have my CCW and a handgun, but barring I am running on a trail that real wild animals may maul me I don't carry.

Bear spray is usually about 40% OC Spray, that would definately incapacitate a perpitrator.  Laughing
