ejc999 - 2005-10-04 11:16 AM Don't forget to explain all that crazy food you guys eat. Ernie
You mean like vegemite & toad-in-the-hole.

It's time to fess up Chris. No-one eats them. Haggis, now that's much better.
One that I'm never 100% on is when an Aussie asks "How did you pull up"

howdya pull up? = How are you feeling? (normally after a big night of drinking)

Mel, don't foget wanker. I confused many a yank with that one. I told one guy in a bar in NC that it meant he was a really good guy. Needless to say he called all his mates wankers for the rest of the night. I was amused at least.

What about
hoo roo = goodbye
cobber = mate / friend
ANZAC = group terminology for kiwis and aussies
Rugby = real football no padding (ok mel I you can include AFL in this one if you have to)
Aerial ping pong= AFL (just to piss ya off mel, althgh I am a fan as well)
Sheila = woman
Good sort = good looking sheila
Slap and tickle = well we all know what goes here
Schooy = Schooner (mid sized beeer glass 400ml)
Stubby = beer bottle
Slab/carton = box of 24 beers

Had to start educating the nrthern types.

ohhh yeah now you've got me thinking about lots of stuff.

tinnie = Can of beer

dunny = toliet/loo

a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock = crazy (my old boss used to use that all the time)

Bloke = a guy

Top bloke = good looking nice guy

and Schooner is an East coast thing.  Every part of OZ has different names for the size glasses of beer.  we call em Middie's over here.  and everyone from different parts of Oz have different names given to them.  I just can't remember them all right now.  Taswegian = someone from Tasmania  Croweater = someone from South Australia,  sand groper = west aussie.  umm I'll try and think of the others.

And by the way you americans.... biscuits are like chocolate biscuits/cookies - we don't call them cookies over here :-)  Your Biscuits are I think scones or something over here

Hehe, wanker is such a common phrase over here, or the shortened version, eg "what a wank" means that person is such a wanker LOL. Yeah and scone is pronounced like gone..... do you have savory scones over there like cheese ones or bacon ones?

This whole thread makes me think about the movie European Vacation when Chevy Chase is in England and the clerk says something to him and he pulls out his translator and starts to translate till his son tells him he was speaking english.
I don't have a clue about what you guys are talking about but I really want to go to Australia and NZ some time in the near future.

Whats strange over here recently is the use of the word Bollocks on TV, in prime time...Lost i think was one and cant remember the other but it was said in the right context ( by the hobbit dude in Lost). Seems like the writers were trying to get one over on the FCC....next comes Wanker or Tosser i bet!
BTW - i am an Expat and i approve this thread
