Okay group here's what I think we all need to do:

First, we are ALL in this together.....the more group involvement we get the better results we will all enjoy....to that end here are some "work-in-progress" ground rules:

1) NO Negativity.....towards ourselves or each other.....remember if you think you can accomplish something, your mind will ensure that you achieve it!

2) I would like to see weekly updates on this thread from each of you...not your whole workout list from the week but a short synopsis of the highs, lows, goods, bads, and especially key breakthroughs!! And of course race results are a must!

3) If anyone has a topic they would like to see covered, let me know (transistions, nutrition, pacing, gear, etc.). I am by no means a expert but I have been around this scene for a while and tried a bunch of different things so maybe you all can benefit from my (and each others) trial and error!

4) Let me know how much and what type of feedback you want/need! I do some coaching with local athletes but am not, shall we say, a bonafide "tri-coach".......but I will try my best to give you all what you need to have fun at this sport!

5) If you prefer to communicate privately (sensitive subject, slightly embarrassed by the topic, need a private ear) please feel free to PM me or use the e-mail I provided to you.

Let's Rock this Group!

Paul

Beth,
I like your cautious approach and long-term solution plan......get this figured out...you will be way better off once you do......have you considered taking all the data from the Chiro/ortho/etc. and getting to a Sports Med specialist? I have found that orthos and chiros (unless they specifically understand/treat sports-related afflictions) tend to discount the goal of getting us back on the road.....just a thought....

Healing thoughts being sent your way!

Paul

Oh yes. My main ortho is a sports med ortho (for the Falcons for what it's worth). I have a follow up scheduled. I am also trying to schedule with the foot guy who specializes in treating runners. I think I may needs some gait analysis to make sure I'm not damaging myself as well. I just want it gone! And if it is compartment syndrome, just give me the test already!!! My sports med is 5/8 at 8am, we'll see what he says. Since the back MRI is normal i'm wondering if it's more of a foot/ankle issue at this point. My chiro said S1 joint dysfunction was present but it may not be the only thing. He's trying to get me back out there, very understanding with athletes.

My goal is to try to ramp up later this week slowly. I think I can do the sprint next week but we'll see.

Thanks!

I'll try to give updates every weekend, maybe on Sunday nights, but here's my update from the past week or so...

I haven't run in a long time, and so I just went to the running shoe store about two weeks ago and started really slow, doing the "Starting from Scratch" program, but I found it a little bit *too* slow for me after the first day.  So up to last week, I was able to run about 12 minutes or so before getting tired, walking a bit, and then alternated running and walking until I got to 30 minutes on my watch timer.

Then, I got sick this past weekend with some food poisoning or something, so I wasn't able to get back outside until today.  When I pretty much ran the same 2.5 mile course around my neighborhood straight in under 24 minutes.  My goal is to increase my running time to an hour without stopping.  So I'll probably do the same thing another day or two this week before increasing it slowly (maybe 5 minutes a week).

Running has always been my weakest link, so I'm working on that first.  I'll get in the swimming and biking eventually.  My first triathlon isn't until September, and I know this mentoring thing runs until July, so I'll be well on my way in my training.  I've got a 5K race in two weeks, which I should be able to do fine on... its more of a charity thing than anything else, and I can always walk when I get tired considering its a run/walk.

I've updated my training log and races so you can check it out (I think its public).

My to-do list for the next week or two:

- Go get sized for a bike at a bike shop in the next couple of weeks
- Work up to running 30 minutes without stopping

While I went down for a check up/fill on my lap-band yesterday, I went by a couple of bike shops in Jonesboro, AR and came away with some questions.

I went into both bike shops and gave the same story each time, I am new to cycling, I have lost 83 pounds since last October and was interested in picking up cycling in addtion to running.  Then I mentioned that I was planning on doing a Tri Sprint in August.  Both bike shops gave me some recommendations and I wanted to run them by someone with a little more of a clue.   Both were extremely helpful...one much more so than the other.

The first bike was a GT Nomad Sport http://www.gtbicycles.com/usa/eng/road_fitnesscommuter?s_language=eng&s_archived=t#4047.  The second bike was a Specialized Crossradhttp://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=32296.  My third option is this....borrowing a friends Schwinn Mesa GS around a 98 Model or so.  I am not big on borrowing things becuase I would rather mess up my own $300 bike as opposed to theirs if something were to happen.

I will not mention which dealer was more enthused about biking and therefore a much better salesman and from what I gather a better businessman in general.  Plus he seemed much more trustworthy and knowledgeable.

The dealers mentioned that I would not be laughed off the road if I bought either one of these.  Any thoughts?  Am I headed in the right direction?

Right on! Mike, that's a great plan! Keep making small incremental improvements....maybe after you can do 60 minutes of run/walk, just start shortening the walk times.....in other words, maybe plan for 2 minutes walking after 5 minutes of running....build this all the way to 1 hour total time.....then start lessening the walk time by 10 seconds per week.......soon enought, you're running 60 minutes straight!!!

Also, kudos to you for getting back out after an illness...all of us have a tendency to let real illnesses sidetrack from getting back on our plan....WAY TO GO!

Keep it up but keep adding conservatively......rushing the build up is asking for injury problems.....

Train Smart!

Well this week for me has been a taper week. I am doing my first HIM on Saturday - so a few short workouts is all I've had. After the HIM on Saturday, I'll have a month of 'base training' - I'm going to loosely follow the BT Winter Maintenance Bike Focus training plan, and the June 16th starts the IM training plan.

Eric,
I don't know what your budget is but both these bikes you mention are "cross/commuter bikes"......if you entertain ANY thoughts of upgrading these to more of a racing configuration in the future, it ain't happening with those frames/components......these bikes are cruisers which makes them a "jack of all trades" kind of bike.....

What I would suggest is that you shop around for a "road" bike.......like these:

http://sunsetcyclery.com/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=39&id=6305

http://sunsetcyclery.com/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=39&id=6304

http://sunsetcyclery.com/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=39&id=6471

Notice the skinny tires and the integrated shifters/brakes.....

My budget was $1000 for all bike and accessories.  Helmet, water bottles and the like.

The place with the Specialized offered at anytime that I wanted to upgrade he would give me 325 off of SRP for trade in.

This weekend I'm going to get some training in again (yeah!) assuming all goes well with my leg. Planning on an open water swim tomorrow am, maybe a ride. Ride on Sunday. Hopefully a deep tissue massage too.

I have a race next weekend so I better get back on it!

A good week all in all for me
Got a run in each weekday and added a Run & Bike Combo for the weekend (save Thurs rest-day).

Looking foward to hearing from all other's in Pauls pedal, pedo and paddle group, and from those racing this weekend.

Eric,
You can totally get an entry level road bike for that. I have a LeMond. It was $750 out the door and fits me very very well. It's a great bike for the price.

Hi All! My update for the past week:

I  was on the treadmill 6 days for 30 minutes each time at varying speeds. Not pushing too hard on the running yet because of my size. I also took 4 short bike rides (to and from a patients house). Just trying to get my butt conditioned for when I get my new bike and start commuting to work. I also ordered a heart rate monitor and I am going to focus on building a base and burning off some fat while training, seems like a pretty smart way to train. I will use the age formula for max HR until I can tolerate/afford a LT test. I also found a local pool with very flexible hours, so once I get into the swing of commuting I will start my swim training. I am trying to introduce things at a slow but steady pace so that I don't get burned out or frustrated. My commute will be 8 miles each way 3 times weekly and 11 miles each way 1-2 times weekly. That is pretty much it for this week, I feel pretty good, some soreness but nothing that feels like injury. Hope everyone has a great week!

Cheers,

      Collin

Okay so I went to the LBS that I said I would not go into it....but he was very helpful.  Extremely friendly and knowledgeable.  So I made a decision to buy the bike locally as opposed to either St. Louis or Jonesboro which are both a couple of hours away.  He even gave me so local spots that he likes to go.  So now here are the bikes I am looking at http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2008/road/2_series/21/ and the or an 07 Pilot 1.2 which is not being made this year.  I am going to test ride both of them tomorrow and make my decision.

That 2.1 is pretty much my bike. Aluminum frame w/carbon fork, 105 derailleur, tiagra up front. Very entry level but it's fine for me for now. I paid $750 so keep that in mind with pricing. It suits me fine for now. I plan to focus on my performance then worry about whether I need a fancier bike later. You always want to find what fits you with the best components for the $. All 105s would be good but you'd be fine with what's on that bike in my opinion. My husband has a full carbon Orbea with full Dura Ace and he gets on my bike and says "this shifts better than mine" :-)

Eric,
Gotta agree with Beth for sure on the bike.......get what you can (105 and Tiaga are fine- no need to ramp up too far on the components) and I do encourage shopping locally so that you have a good contact for upgrades and info and repairs down the road......

While test riding them make sure the bike shop guys knows that you might want to change the configuration later to something more "tri" oriented......this may sway their decision as to which bike fits now and will fit in the future........

Exciting stuff! Keep us posted and put up some pitures when you get it home!

Ok after much deliberation...I went with the Trek Pilot 1.2.  I know it's an '07 model but the only difference that I can find between the 2.1 and the 1.2 is that the 1.2 is more aluminum that carbon and it was $500 cheaper.  I will post pics after I pick it up tomorrow.  The 2.1 was going to be around 1250 and then I needed all the necessities (water cages, repair kits etc) and I got the Pilot 1.2 for 725 fully loaded.  Here is a link but real pics come tomorrow. http://willybikes.com/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=1&id=10295
