After a pain in the A** registration we're in! I hope that my Disney MOJO will be better this time. Now, should I just take my bike & trainer to the Y & put my trainer in the sauna or just crank up the heat in the basement while I ride on the trainer . . .

On the topic of race day temps, can anyone who has raced here in previous years remember what the humidity was? I'm from Atlanta and understand that humidity plays a major role during a hot race (especially for us "sweaters"). Everyone mentions HOT with this race, but nobody gives a humidity level. I'm just counting on it being sticky humid, and if its not, then its a bonus.

Im from NJ, a little conerned about the heat/humidity as well. I searched for weather on May 19 05,06,and 07. (I know, race falls on different dates, just wanted an idea) In 05 high was 88 with 90%humidity(UGH). 06 was better, 86 with 72% humidity. And 07 was 82 with 68%.

I really like the heat, and I dont mind racing in it. Just worried about not being warm enough in NJ in the weeks leading up to the race to be used to it. I love riding in 95+, but it dont get that hot here in NJ til june. By then my body has adjusted to th heat.

From the FLA 70.3 site: "The water is clear with a dark bottom giving it a tea like look."
Is that to hide the alligators (or is it crocodiles there)?

I remember once on croc hunter, steve irvin said the croc's don't attack in the water. They grab food wading close to shore. That being said, I will be freaking out til I can't touch bottom. So entering and exiting the water are the only things that I'm not looking forward to at this race. It will be my first HIM, and I'm so excited. Can't wait!!!

I did a little research on alligators attacking in water. Looks like I confused the attacking in water thing. They won't attack UNDER water. Most human attacks occur in the water near their young or food. I also searched "alligator fort wilderness disney" and there is a youtube video of some dope feeding a gator (small, only about 2ft head-tail). It wasn't in the lake, in a canal in ft wilderness. I imagine the big gators are removed. The small ones probably slip through.

We stayed at Bonnet Creek resort for the marathon a few weeks ago. At the manmade lake there there was a 2 1/2 ft. gator that hung out by the shore. I will make a mental note to not wear any food & keep the he** away from the babies and should be o-k. Maybe I'll go get my teatnus shot updated too . . .

I think gators and other predators single out the sick and the weak of a group of their prey.
Just a little incentive to be a "faster" swimmer (no lagging behind).

Can anyone give their experience with driving in the morning of the race, parking, and getting to the transition area. My kids want to stay at the Nick Hotel. The website makes it sound easy but...

I could use some hotel advice as well.  My wife is out of town on business that weekend so she and the kids will not be coming...no cheering squad for me

Anyway, I don't have to stay in the most park friendly place, just the most convenient to the race, buses, etc.  Any multi-timers have any advice?

There is a saying around our house (started after there was a bear at a local tri we did) I don't have to be faster than the bear, I just have to be faster than you!" I guess the same goes for the alligators, so my new mantra for FLA 70.3 - "I don't have to swim faster than the gators, I just have to swim faster than atleast one other person!"

Sorry, can't help w/ lodgings, I am staying in a non-Disney place that is a timeshare deal.

This is my first Florida 70.3, but I am staying at the Wilderness Lodge to be close to the race. My family is staying at the Port Orleans hotel, which is with in a short ride or walk to the race and half the price. Maybe that would be a good place to start.

You can book right through the Florida half ironman website.

Hope that helps.

2500 yards in the pool yesterday! Look out gators!

Planning on running the FL 70.3 next year. Just starting out this year.

On the subject of Gators. I was a little worried too since every pond in coastal South Carolina (Beaufort) has at least one gator and they got huge on Parris Island (12 ft). So I looked up some info on gators and the only comforting thing I could find is that they do fear humans unless some dope feeds them in which case, they start connecting us with food. I know from seeing them regularly on golf courses that they prefer the edges of the water and that if you disturb the water while they're in the middle, they will try to swim away. I presume a human washing machine like you'll see in the FL HIM will probably chase them to the banks where they'll be po'd. Again, most of this is not proven. I almost worry more about sharks around here since there was a 500+ lb Bull caught back in November by a 9 year old kid. Bull Sharks are more aggressive than Gators I think.

Anyway, here's the National Park Service site on gators if it helps.

Wish we would have decided a few weeks earlier that we were doing this. We were just down at disney a few weeks ago & could have ridden the bike course to check it out!

I have decided that I am o-k with the gators. In addition to being a better than avg. swimmer (I will leave others behind to wrassle the gators) I have trimmed down quite a bit. Any smart gator will go for the meatier folk. Diet anyone?!?

Here's some advice my coach gave me about sharks...bet it would work for gators, too.  He said to carry a knife with me, and if I see a shark, to stab the person next to me

Wonder if there has EVER been a shark or gator attack in ANY tri?? I have never heard of one...I'd be more worried about the dang blasted RUN course...BRUTAL.  So why am I going back?  Glutton, I guess

What is it about the run? What exactly is BRUTAL? I keep hearing this and can't get a grip on it. Your experience would be greatly appreciated.

For the record, I'm NOT concerned with the gators (now that I've said it, they'll certainly concentrate on me, so the rest of you are safe).

I wouldn't say it is brutal at all. it can get warm due to the heat but racing in FL it should be expected. Some people dislike the fact that half of it is on trails but I personally don't mind it as it is a bit less stressing on the legs.

For the record, Disney inspects all the lakes on a regular basis (former cast member here, I know this for a fact) and if a gator is found on property, it is usually transported about 30 miles north to Lake Jesup, outside of Orlando.  Or...if need be...eliminated.

The gator mentioned before that was outside one of the resorts was most likely "relocated" soon after you saw it.  Usually within a day.  No one needs to worry about gators (unless they are Tri-Gators) at this race.  All bodies of water on Disney property is controlled...from temperature, to water level...so don't worry, you're all very safe.

Now, about that trail running.  I'd be happier if it were ALL trail!  Trail running ROCKS!!!!

I'm excited about racing this one in 08!  I can't wait to see Jorge lap me.

All this talk about gators is kind-off funny to me.  Just depends on your background.

Growing up in FL and on a lake with lots and lots of gators and swimming in the lake as children virtually every day from May to Sept, I can assure you that gators are not something to be concerned with.

To this day, I swim in a lake that has gators and have no concern for them.  With that being said, I am not going to be swimming at dusk/night when they are out and about.  That is just dumb.

Ok Gang,

We are 9 weeks (and a few days) away from the race... how is everyone's training coming along? It is time to SUAT, HTFU, JFT and start logging the specific training sessions!

Maybe as of next week we should post here our weekly progress to keep and eye on each other and keep the motivation flowing
