Shaun, I have a gps but I'm not real sure about how to get it to measure smaller distances than miles. I will just have to play around with it.

Any help you can find Beth great. It sounds like you have a boat load on your plate! I will be off line until sometime Sunday, so I will check in then. Hope you all have great weekends.

Heather, good job on the improvement.

Ceilidh,

BAMBAM asked me about measuring distance in a lake.  There are a couple things you can do...

1)  Swim by time.  Hard to measure "progress" but it can be effective.  If you have a rough pace from a pool, you can estimate distance to 10-15% without too much problem.

2)  Are you swimming from a dock to a raft/platform, or dock-to-dock, or pretty much between two fixed points and you just don't know the distance?  Let the dock be "A" and the raft "B."  Pick a point on shore (like a tree, or a rock landmark) "C."  Measure the distance between "A" and "C."  Use a compass and find the heading from "A" to "C" and "A" to "B."  Swim out to the dock and measure the angle from "B" to "C."   You now have the angles CAB and CBA so you can find the third angle (BCA or ACB, however you want to think of it) by subtracting the first two from 180.  Then use the "Law of Sines" to find the unknown distance from two angles and the known distance between "A" and "C."  (I can sketch this out and post the diagram later if you want.

3)  If you swim a different route each time, take a 100' rope, two floats (empty 1-Gallon milk jugs), two anchors (1-Gallon jugs half full of sand), and two more pieces of rope to go between the anchor and float.  The 100' rope gives you about 33 yards end-to-end.  If it's brightly colored polypropylene, you can submerge the rope about 4' down and swim directly over it.  Otherwise, swim next to the rope on the surface.

Thanks Mc Fuzz.  I can go ahead use the rope method.now and do some measuring later. (ya think I could have thought of that myself!). That will make it easy to have some varying distances to shoot for.

1 - Tinyswife - hey my hubby & I are working out together too!  Way to go!  He's  not going to do a tri with me this year, but it's fun working out together!

2 - Great idea about the bright rope!  I was going to try my first open water swim next week with my man kayaking beside me for safety, but I was wondering how to figure the distance.  I was really just going to go until I got tired, but a goal would be a lot better.  Also, without the orange bouys I was worried about staying in a straight line.  Now I've got a great new idea for staying straight, I just have to convince the man that we need to drop some more $$ into the tri bucket!

3 - How is everyone doing on their goals this week?  I missed my swim today - got to the pool & the lifeguard never showed up, so they didn't open it!  Arrgh!!!  Alternate plan - 1 extra mile on my run tonight & I'll still feel like I accomplished a lot.  I'll have to catch up on my swim next week.  I can only swim Wed-Sat because I work 12-hour shifts Fri-Sun.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!  It's 85 degrees here in sunny Central Florida...how's the training weather where you are?Cool

Hello all,

I wanted to get these two links to my wife to help her with swimming and I figured there might be a few in her group that could benefit from them as well so I thought I would post them here.

Hope they are helpfull.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I may be pretty scarce until Thursay morning.  It is coming down to the last week of classes and I have a gazillion projects due.  Inspires will come at all times of the day and night.  Keep up the good work.  Remember to set your weekly goals and make them S(pecific)M(easurable)A(ttainable)R(ealistic)T(imely).

My goals this week are: 1) to finish my British romantic literature paper by noon tomorrow; 2) finish my compare/contrast paper by noon Wednesday; 3) finish take home essay by start of class on Wednesday (7pm); and 4) finish unit plan by Thursday evening.

I haven't even added in the stuff for Spanish that I need to do this week as well.  I need to watch a movie and write a paper on it, finish an essay that she didn't like the first time around, answer some questions about Sandra Cisneros and her story "The House on Mango Street" and other  things that I can't remember right now.

There you have it! My goals for the week--did you notice that sleep is NOT part of the plan?!?!?!!!!

Thanks!  My hubby (McFuzz) is also a swim guru and helps out lots of people here on the forum.  Lots of resources around here.

You can also post questions in the Tri Talk section.

Morning all. I did little this weekend since we were traveling and had family obligations. My goal this week is to start my "official" training program. Like everything else in my life, the "planned" trining will have to be re-arranged accordin to life and the weather. For example, It has rained 2 inches here since yesterday and it is still raining AND the temps are dropping so I will NOT be swimming until the end of the weekm so the swimming. There is no way for me to run today because all my routes are flooded. Bike on the rollers in the garage it is... UG.

Hang in there Beth.

Tiny.. Thanks for the videos.

PS. my name is Robin so you don't have to deal with the logon name.- which is gaelic  by the way.

Have great days all.

I love your gaelic name Robin but glad to know your real name too.  What does your gaelic name mean?

Over the weekend my husband and I swam 20 minutes, road a bike for 40 min, we rested saturday (except for cleaning house, taking care of 3 kids, guitar lessons, baseball, and homework).  That is a rested day!! Ha Ha!  Anyway, we did not excercise saturday, but sunday we ran 20 minutes.  I am pretty sore, but I feel really good.  Sunday night my husband said he thinks I will lose 3 or 4 pounds by the end of this week.  When I got up this morning and weighed I have already lost 3 pounds.  Crazy!  Working out really works and getting healthy feels really good!

Thanks for the sketches McFuzz. They are going to help a lot (once the water is warm enough to get back into). Okay, I guess I could paddle, too!

Beth, My "name" is a gaelic word that means musical party- singing, playing instruments. dancing, (implied drinking). Used as in "lets go down to the pub, I hear there is a ceilidh on." Believe it or not it is pronounced cay-lee. (I have no idea why it is spelled the way it is). It is also the name of my dog.

Good job on the weekend working out Tiny's wife. Feeling better is addictive isn't it?

McFuzz & Tiny -

Thanks for the resources!  Beeeaaauutiful!

No workouts for me yesterday or today: 12-hour shifts on my feet all day.  Tomorrow is my last 12 in a row (every week) & I'll run 2 miles if I have any energy left.

Wednesday starts my training week:

Wed - Swim 400-750 (depending on coach) & Bike 5-10 (depending on swim)

Thurs - Run 2-3

Fri - Swim 300 & Bike 10

Sat - Run 4

Sun & Mon - Rest

Tues - Run 1-2 if  legs have any energy

I have until October to get ready for my Sprint - anyone have any ideas on how to get training in when you work long days?

Darling - some of us are REALLY beginners here!  What the heck are you talking about???  Do tell!  While I'm a severe newbie, I'm very interested in learning.  Obviously you are WAY above my level on sooooo much!   1 - the taper?  I'm assuming this is less of a workout?  Tapering down?  2 - zipp wheels?  3 - pack  unpack stuff?  4 - 606, 808, 404...?  Lions & Tigers & Bears, Oh MY!  Should I even hang around any more...I'm definitely outclassed here - hanging with the big boys in the beginners room makes me feel like the pre-schooler I really am!

no your right about the taper . the week before a race cut back your training volume to be rested for the race and fully recovered . and the zipp wheels are some faster wheels . they come in diffrent depths . sorry bout that i was thinking to myself when i was wrote that . you can take a look at them on zipp.com they are a bit more aero and are faster then the wheels i got on my bike what im looking for is to be faster on bike leg of the FL race i got on may 18

Taper week hard due to the addictive quality of training?  It feels so good to feel good & I made it happen!

I get physically exhausted easily (years of stress & illness) so feeling great due to training is very addictive for me.  One of my great challenges is allowing myself to take a rest day during the week.  Another challenge is the concept of lighter training weeks to allow for recovery.  I keep reading about the concept, but really don't buy into it psychologically.  I get it from a facts-only standpoint, but  there's this little gremlin in the back of my brain saying: "if you back off all gains will be lost!"  He has a nasty little voice & cackles when he speaks Wink(no, I'm not crazy, just trying to make the point that it's easy to over-train due to our thought processes).

Hey, best wishes on your May 18th event!  Let us know how it goes.

Heh...I see you're a Silver member, so look for a training plan appropriate for the distance you're racing, load it into your log and let that vanquish the gremlin.  Now, you're just following the plan...if it says "train" you train, if it says "rest" you rest.  It'll have you ready for the race.

Just a quick check in---

I am halfway finished with my papers.  I turn in 1 tonight, my senior project is nearing its end.  I have 2 biggies that are coming up--one 10-12 pager due Friday morning at 10 and one 10-12 pager due Tuesday.  A few more late nights and then I 'll be ready to return to the real world.  I'm still trying to keep an eye out for everyone.  As I see things arise I send in the experts--like McFuzz.

Kim (Ithink it was),

tapering is super important.  Even the pros have taper times built into their training programs.  Although I have to admit that consistent tapering (like I'm doing now) is NOT a good idea.  I may send a few of my friends over here to discuss the finer points of tapering.  They have all done HIM and IM.

Hey Teresa- glad to have your real name.

I have been out of town. and i wll try to get with my "planned" training. However, the lake is Dam cold and they are calling for rain this weekend so we will see how that goes.

I may or may not be on the boards here i the next week- We are having a wedding in our yard next Saturday and I am traveling out of town for work next week  I have a boat load to do to get this place ready and a lot of work stuff I am behind in and to keep up with this training that for some reason I thought was good to start now. (What was I thinking?) Oh well, It will all sort out, and the good news is at least one day next week I will be at a hotel with a pool so I can swim, even if there are 45 tourists with children, I will Swim!!!

Shaun, your training is amazing. BTW, did you get the wheels?

Beth, you are Sooooo close to being able to enjoy the weather and train again.

I feel this exact same way!  As a matter of fact, at the check out line last night at the grocery store (9:30ish) McFuzz says, "So when you actually gonna start training for your big race this summer?"  I told him hopefully by Wednesday but, now that I think about it, that m ight not be a good idea since one of my college friends turns 21 Wednesday so we are all going out at Midnight and getting her started on drinking! Thursday is looking more doable!
