Lezak's swim was phenomenol!  But the AR stays with Phelps (for now).  Only the lead-off swimmer can set an individual record in a relay event.  Australia's lead-off (Eamonn Sullivan) actually set a new WR in the race (47.24) taking 0.26 seconds off the old mark.  My guess is both the AR & WR will only last until the 100m individual race takes place.

So you can actually set a WR in an individual even (say the 100m free) in a relay event if you swim 1st?  Seems kind of strange but if those are the rules.

Yes you can but only if you lead off. The 2nd-4th swimmers can have a rolling start - they simply need to stay on the block until the swimmer before them touches but can be rolling forward. The first swimmer in a relay, like the first swimmer in an individual event does not have the advantage of a rolling start, which if done correctly can save you up to 3/4 of a second.
