I'm not a coach, and I don't know your athletic background.  I would rather see less attention to base building for a sprint.  Instead, I would start this fall with base building for a 2009 Oly or two but incorporate sprint races as part of the buildup and gaining race experience as prep to an Oly.  Waiting until 2010 to do an Oly seems way too conservative.  Also, race more.  Use B and C priority races to have fun, keep the interest up, and to gain experience (gear, transition skills, nutrition, etc.) that you will be able to draw upon in your HIM and IM races in the future.   Good luck.

Maybe this isn't a useful post (okay, lets face it, NONE of my posts are useful), but that graph there just took all the fun and adventure out of tri training. If I had something like that before I even did my first one, I'd have quit already for failure to achieve stated objectives. Something about familial obligations, injury after injury...

A few thoughts...

1.  Too much detail and granularity.  3/19/12 ??  How about just going with "Spring of 2012"

2.  Since you're just now training for you "first sprint" what makes you think you are gonna like triathlons?

3.  Why do you want to do an IM?  Many people do triathlons for years and year and neve do an IM.

 4.  If you do want to do an IM, what makes you think you need 4 years to train for one?

I really wish I could see that plan.  Unfortunately I'm at work right now and it's being blocked.

I came here as I noted the year...the same year I'm thinking of for my first IM.  I thought people might think I was nuts to have such a long plan.  I'm waiting for a couple of little girls (my daughters) to grow up enough to get themselves ready for school in the morning thus giving me a little more time to train   Shall I become unemployed or something like that, I'd have more time sooner and things could change.

Anyway, some things I have in mine to keep it interesting are some HIMs in other states where I have friends to visit, some fun local mini-tris as it's good practice for transitions IMO, as well as some century rides for charity and 2 marathons in fun places to visit with my family.  Some of these things will take a while to plan and save money for being out of state and bringing family, etc., so I like to stay on top of it.

Good luck to you with following or changing your plan...whatever the case may be.  It's just good to know I'm not the only one with such a long term plan

8 Months to build up to a Sprint???

We wouldn't have gotten to the moon if we had sandbagged like that. If you wanted to you could train for a HIM and finish strong in 8 months.

Challenge yourself....

I agree 100% with adding tons of actual races. I just finished my first tri this summer at the Accenture Chicago Triathlon and can't wait to do more.

No matter how hard I was training it doesn't compare to actual races.

So after completing my initial tri season just shooting for the Chicago race - I realize how much I missed out on.

For 2009 I am planning on 5 Olympic races, and if all is looking good around late June/early July I will be doing a Half IM in Sept/Oct.

Good luck - remember have fun - and get to the races!

A side note - I know that there often is talk about races having expensive entry fees - I look at is as equal to a round of golf - and WAY more fun!!

I'm 5'7" and sitting right around 230lbs. at the moment. About 7 years ago when I was running 5+ miles, 5 days a week  and lifting consistantly I was just under 180lbs. Which is about the weight where I played lacrosse at.

I am challenging myself, I've got 50+ pounds to lose and 6 years of sedentary lifestyle to correct between now and then too. Terrible what money and marriage will do to you! Laughing

Too many details, too far away.  Train lots, race lots, have fun!

Absolutely great advice...has worked for 11 yrs for me! Just don't let an injury derail your whole "plan". Shorter time lines are much more practical. (says one waiting for hip surgery in the next week, putting me out of tomorrows Nationals)

Well I'm not gonna tell you your plan isn't a good idea because it's clearly who you are and how you think at work there.  I can appreciate long term plans, as I am much a look-to-the-future type too, and I think you're just really psyched up to do tri's (yay!). So I think it's good to say, "OK, I'm shooting for an IM in 2012."

....but past that, I just don't think you can realistically plan your training that far out.  Life is too unpredictable!  And while short-term training plans provide the structure you need to get to your first race, your A-race, etc, planning too much will probably take the fun out of it.  Remember, you aren't at work you're doing a tri!  It's supposed to be your break from all things organized.

Best of luck and have fun!
