(yes it can be more than one bike) 1.) Depends on the day and my mood. My road bike is still being built; ordered a Serotta Ti bike to replace the LOOK carbon fiber which was totalled by a car. Most of my miles go to the roadie; 4 rides a week. Cyclocross bike is Eddy Merckx Aluminum. Great bike. Pic attached (pardon the spacers; they're gone now!) TT / Tri bike is a Wilier Triestina Aluminum bike. Super quick in a straight line. Accelerates so easily. I'll average 2-3mph better than the roadie, but it's not an all-day ride. Pic attached. Winter beater / Touring bike is Surly Cross Check steel. Panniers, racks, big 700x32 tires. Weighs 28lbs un-loaded. It's a tank, but I can pack for 2-3 days if I want to. Mountain Bike is 1996 Specialized Aluminum hardtail. I ride it barely 3-4 times a year anymore. It's been forced to live in the shed even though it's done nothing wrong to deserve that. 2.) Money = no object; Tough one. The newer bikes are always better engineered than the previous years. Always some incremental improvement. Maybe Parlee or Calfee custom fit would be about the ceiling. You're looking at ~$10K for frame only and that's pretty much a budget buster for most mortals. They're durable so far. 1 year's worth of 5 sprints, 3TT's an OLY and about 1000 training miles. No issues to date. They were a relative bargin; I paid $600 shipped. Don't know why I jumped into a run challenge, but it'll do me good. I've just finished my second tri season and already looking at the '09 calendar. I'll do an occasional 5K, but mostly am a cyclist. I'm in for 40; hopefully I'll be able to adjust that upward. I need a push to keep me running. It's the start of cyclocross season, so I'll be busy racing most weekends. Between that, work, our daughter and fitting in swimming twice a week, it should be EASY to find the time to up my run miles! I've crossed this one with a side-bet with my friends. Guilt free Halloween. We're counting calories burned and earning Reese's twin packs (280 cal in atwin pack). This only helps that bet. I'll start with 6 tomorrow as I swam 2miles this morning.
Dave, Did you go to Pitt too? Cause then clearly we were destined to be on this team together.

I'm at the point where that's really the difference between me and the guys 1 and 2 places up. I can hang with them on the swim, beat them on the run, but they have a good 2mph on me on the bike. Add race wheels to Companero (my bike) and maybe I can hang with them and move on up. |

I grew up in A-town, PA, went to Pitt for 5 awesome years, then FL for a bit, VA now, getting the urge to move again. So I usually claim Pittsburgh as home....it's a tough question to answer.

Kids were out of school, wife teaches so she was out of school. Plus I work from home so it's not a problem to get an hour on the bike at lunchtime or during a conference call on the trainer. I don't have any more IMs in the near future for the exact reasons you stated above. Hard to miss out on all that stuff. Right now it's just T-ball, but in a few years....who knows? |

It's not likely to get any less competitive by the time you turn 50. There is a guy in my tri club who was the number 1 ranked USAT male in the 40-44 group and he will be in his 50s in 2015. He's 45 now and still winning the overall at many of the smaller races. How fast he is, is just sick! I have another friend who goes to Kona every 5 years when he ages up. He can qualify at will and he is going this year since he is 45. He only does this every 5 years because he doesn't want to devote more time than that for IM training due to having a family with young children. The point is, do IM when you are ready and it fits in with your life - but don't kid yourself about it being less competitive. |

I'm not out to beat those guys, or to podium. I'm not really in that same category (just take a look at my blog and that should confirm it. Just saying (more tongue-in-cheek than anything) that it's a lot less pressure doing an IM when people pass you and there's a '50' written on your right leg. You get the to play the sympathy card. It makes it even more fun to pass people with a '29' written on their leg. Yeah, I'm a little self-absorbed and have ego issues, but that was quite a bit of fun passing people younger than me at races this tri season. Point well taken, but I think our definition of 'competitive' is a little different. |
