Dream Chaser - 2008-10-13 11:34 AM Andrew1801:  Dude, for your first OWS finishing it was a huge win.  To be honest, if that was my first OWS, I may have not made it!!  With conditions like that, you can't focus on time at all.  Fantastic Job everyone

Thanks Mate.  Much appreciated!  Waiting till the spring for the next one is going to be tough.  I guess it will give me some good time to train.  I got ready for this one in 6 weeks...  I am looking forward to seeing what I can do with more time.

Train well this Winter and come next year on Long Island alone are the Ironclad Tri, Mini Mighty Man, Long Island Gold Coast, Mighty Montauk (Olympic - and highly recommended)...  lots of local tri's.  Hey, you're officially a triathlete now

Congrats!

rkquinn - 2008-10-13 4:35 PM First post here, had to see what people were saying about that swim.  That was only my 4th race (all sprints) and nothing even came close to those conditions.  Interested to here from the vets on where those conditions rank on a 1-10 with some of the other tough ones.
Seriously, Andrew1801….huge props for tackling that for you first OWS.
Look forward to chatting more with everyone.
Ryan

Welcome to Beginner Triathlete   My first Open Water Swim was at Lake Welch, at the Endurasport Olympic triathlon, up in Harriman State Park in Upstate New York.  The lake water was 55 degrees!!!  That was a tough swim just because of the temp.  In July I swam 1.2 miles in the Narragansett Bay, which is pretty much the Atlantic Ocean, excepty a piece of land juts out a bit to form a cove.  That was pretty nasty, big waves and all.  But nothing had prepared me or compares to the white caps and swells we just swam in!!  Didn't look like it affected the top 10 finishers swim times too much though.

Also, does anyone know who was in charge of photography at Cedar Beach?  I don't see anything on the website.

I'm guessing Island Photo?  Whatever e-mail you used to sign up with, you will get an email from the photography place in about a weeks time.  And if you don't buy a photo, they will send you several e-mails to remind you that the photos are expiring.

Ive done many years of open water swimming and by far this swim was a real challange. Chop tank @ Eagleman is also tuff. One thing tat was disturbing was that there were swimmers cutting the buoys according to people on the beach. Did you see how many dropped out of the swim on the last two ages of the results? Had to be at least 75 to 100 athletes  who DNS. How about that sharp turn on the road heading back along the harbor on the bike? I almost saw a biker hit by an oncoming car. Should have had someone there leting bikers know that it was a real dangerous curve ahead. Overall the race was excellent except for the bike mix up, but the race management tried to make up for it. Too bad I didn't win the P2C. Nice race for its second year. Should get better with time.

I was wondering why there were so many DNS.  I never looked at the age groups to see they were the later waves.  I did also see a bunch of people cut the first buoy...  was focusing on staying alive after that so I stopped paying attention to others...  I almost got stuck on the second buoy as I felt my ankle hit the rope as a wave pushed it simultaneously and pulled me a bit. Such a rush just thinking about itSealed

I also almost got hit by some idiot pulling out of a parking spot on the bike near that turn where all the water was on the ground.  All I could do is shake my head and keep riding.

That's the same report I had concerning people cutting the second bouy. The results are all subject. Thank God you didn't get hurt being hit. Sure take your life in your hands riding these days. Lots of people of doped up on anti-depression meds, talk too much on the cell, or just are too stupid to give a cyclist a break. I see it even while running. People just don't care on the roads anymore.

It was not an easy swim with the swells and the sweep. Many were pulled far right on the return and had to run along the shore to the timing shute. Many DNF because of the swim.
