Bill,

If there is still room, I would like to join the group!

I'm 34 and married with two boys  (ages 1 and 4).  The beginning of this year I signed up for a 10K to FORCE myself to get in shape and stop the downward spiral of AGING.  I loved the race atmosphere.  I then signed up for a sprint tri, started swimming and bought a TT bike, and got hooked.  This year I've done 2 tris 3 dus and a 10K (hurricanes cancelled 2 tris and a du)

I'm currently on the BT HIM plan training for the New Orleans 70.3 (it's in my backyard so I had to sign up)   I just want to prove to myself I can finish it.

All 3 diciplines are SLOW and need work... Like 53epilot I too would like to have some accountability with my training (the daylight savings stuff is killing me).  I love to "race" and train and plan on doing this from here on out.

I'll hold you accountable, and I'll see you in New Orleans.  If there's Abita at the finish, I'm pretty sure I'll make it to the end.

Hi all, I would love to join in, here are some deets:

Name: Kiri

Family: 1 partner, 2 cats, 6 bicycles, no car

Current Training: 3x balanced sprint/oly home-made base building.

Goals:
1. Finish 3 sprints and 1 oly for my first season
2. Lose more weight, 16 pounds so far
3. Have fun
4. Run!

I just got off the couch (basically) 4 months ago - something needed to change - and started this adventure. I am a terrible runner, still working on the couch to 5k. Never been a runner, never wanted to be a runner, but am growing to really enjoy it. I can bicycle and swim forever so for both of those I just need to improve fitness, and get faster.  I am pretty good at sticking to my schedule but always find it hard to motivate to do strength and core. I can use all the advice, wisdom, knowledge, HTFU's I can get... Oh and I'm interested in building my own tri bike this spring, so can use some encouragement on that front as well.

Good to have you, kiri.

Sesh says HTFU.   That has actually been written on someone's arm in a marathon before!

Name:  Matt

Story:   38 years old and I am a brand new triathlete.  I found BT the end of August 08 and committed myself to getting my health back.  First week of September 08 I blew my knee up in a pickup game of basketball and had surgery 2 days later.  The injury just made me mad and more focused.  I am not going to let this stop me.  So I am hoping to use your experience of recovery to help me with mine.

Family: Married for 17 years, 2 daughters (12,9) and a female cat.  I too seek some extra testosterone!

Goals:  I want to complete 2 sprints this summer.  I am cleared to run but haven't yet.  I have been doing alot of swimming, rehabbing the knee and riding the bike trainer.

All to familiar, Matt.  You can definitely make it back, though.  In fact, you've got a much better plan than I did.  I signed up for a marathon the day after they cleared me to run.  I ended up hating running for a while.

mchally - 2008-12-17 12:35 PM Hey, can I join as well? Some info in a moment...

Of course you can, Mel. You gotta catch me up, too, since I've been an absent Nibb lately.

My word for the day...Nibbleteer.

Having just gotten married, you are expected to disappear for a while.

Ok, so I should probably get some actual work done, but it's good to have the group set, and it looks like we've got all kinds of goals and experiences to draw from.  This will be fun!

Right off the bat, I notice nearly all of us mentioned weight.  Some want to drop it off, some just want to get into race shape (I've been in both situations).  I STRONGLY suggest using the nutrition log on the site.  If you don't know how, just say so and I'll walk you through it.

Second of all, I noticed some bike maintence mentions and Kiri even wants to build one (AWESOME!).  Pick up a copy of Zinn and the Art of Triatlon Bikes or Zinn and the Art of Road Bikes.  I built a tri bike using this book alone and it is full of really good info, explanations, and best of all... pictures.

Did you have to ask?  It'll be coming after several botched attempts until I finally accidentally get it right or have someone else do it for me.

Thanks for the post - my husband had sent that to me yesterday so I hope to use some of those mental images next time I am in the pool.

I use another site for my nutritional stuff and have been very good about keeping up w/ it - holiday cookies and all. I do use the BT site for the training log and plan on starting the Beginner 1/2 Ironman RPE plan on Jan. 19.

Thanks for mentoring and excited to be part of the group!

I haven't exactly stuck to my nutrition.  A few too many desserts keep showing up in the office.

Awesome.  You ought to really like it.  Well, as much as you can like a trainer anyway.  They're a necessary evil.  Or.. a very evil necessity.

sesh - 2008-12-17 10:57 AM I know how you feel, Daniel.  I passed a grand total of zero people in my tris this year.  I'm always in the first wave and one of the first few out of the water.  Then I get to look at all the awesome bikes go past me and have the runners that pass me ask if I'm ok or need help.  It looks like you can help me make sure Samantha loves to swim by the time we are all done here.

Yes I have become an expert on the back side of top-end tri bikes.  Can't recognize them from the front.

Looks like Samantha is a running legend so if you guys can help me learn to run then we have a deal!  Good to be on board.

Will it tell me how to change a tire?  I don't know what I'm going to do if I get a flat during a race and can't just yell "Honey, this tire thingy is broken.  Can you fix it for me?"

(Yes, we are starting from scratch with bike maintenance here!)

Sure do but at least I don't have to listen to it for long - they seem to be out of hearing range pretty quickly Laughing.

It's good motivation to get better though...
