Joe- great to have you!  I am planning on doing the Shamrock Shuffle too...Do you know when registration opens?

I am also from Chicago... do you (or anyone else for that matter) have any suggestions for races in the area for someone who is new to the sport?

I am planning on hitting the stationary bike in the fitness room where I live... I was supposed to this morning, but was feeling really light headed (low BS) so decided to wait till later...hopefully all the snow we are supposed to get (6-12 inches) won't make the drive too bad.

ETA: Last night I ran 3.2 miles on the treadmill in 37 minutes...It felt awful...I was really dragging and I think I am developing PF in my left foot.  I am seeing a PT (my uncle) next week, but for now I am just trying to stretch better.

Oh ick, I dealt with that earlier this year.  Keep up the stretching!  Hey, I am planning to drive up from Springfield for the Shamrock Shuffle, we should plan a BT meetup.

We got about 6" of snow yesterday and last night and it's 12F out there right now.  I'll do below freezing but not snow.  I'm afraid of slipping or twisting an ankle or something.

So my options are go to the Y, do some weights and ride the bike for a bit OR take advantage of the time my son is in school to finish my Christmas shopping.  I haven't decided yet.

 L.

P.S. If the storm that came through here is headed for you it has potential of dropping a lot of snow.  We didn't get much but Spokane (eastern edge of WA state) got 20".

Shamrock opens Jan 1 and sells out pretty fast. I would suggest registering that day to ensure that you get in. It’s flat fast and fun and just remember that its 4.9 miles not 4.

This was supposed to be my workout this morning… They changed my work hours so I now have a lot of time in the morning. I was going to run this AM but maintenance was in my apartment replacing my furnace filter and something on the door and I did not trust the guys doing it so I sat there and watched them. I will complete tonight after work.

.5 mile warm up

5 mile tempo @ 6:11 per mile

.5 cool down

Ok, I apologize in advance because this is not even remotely tri-related, but people at work are already starting to leave because of the hysteria about the approaching storm. It's not doing anything yet...thanks for listening to that.

Hey folks - got my run in today....

Looking forward to seeing what the you've accomplished today or latter in the week!

Writebrained Tip of the Day:  Cool down.  Do not jump in the car or simply stop after a workout.  Walk, jog, tread water, spin, etc. until your heart rate drops in to the low 100s.  I have a friend who maxed out at 180 HR and told me he jumped in his car immediately and sat there for a cool down.  When you hear about some "old guy" who dies taking off his running shoes after a run...there is a distinct possibilty he didn't let his heart recover properly.  The cool down gets more critical the older you get.

Feel free to comment......

Pretty much all of the Seattle area shut down yesterday because of the potential for snow.  And it didn't happen.  As a former Seattleite I can say that they are real snow-phobes.

Your solution here is to get yourself Yaktrax.  They are awesome for running outside when conditions are slippery.

Agree.  It would actually be better if they just went ahead and left. The nervous darting back and forth to the window to "see if it's here yet", loudly announcing any weather updates for all to hear, and the general anxiety level are a bit distracting.

I called our local running store and was surprised that they don't carry these.  I saw something at Meijer that looks like the same thing, but is not promoted for running.  I may give those a shot before ordering the real thing.

Joe:  Thanks for the suggestions...so far I have not been a big fan of the races I have done in Chicago because of the number of people, but it definately is easy to get to them...I was planning on doing the Naperville race and will look into the lake in the hills race. Have you done Lake Geneva, Racine or Pleasant Prarie?

I did the Turkey Trot in downtown this year which is supposed to be an 8K like the Shamrock Shuffle hopefully it was because I finished that with a decent time for me

I am a resident at the Univeristy of Chicago so I swim at the on campus athletic center.

Thanks again for the help...

they aren't really meant for deep snow better for icy spots, more for packed snow than fluff.

I got mine at Eddie Bauer.  Also not really promoted for running.  There is also a Pro version which I doin't have but look virtually identical to what I have.  Other runners I know swear by them.

Are these those spikey things?  If so, I used them all them time when I lived in Alaska and they were a life saver when running on the roads!

I feel for all of you in snowy/freezing conditions although I actually miss the snow ~ I love skiing!  Unfortunately, it's been raining pretty much non stop here for the last 2 weeks, though?!

As for working out...I am currently focusing on running because I am doing an 8.15 mile run in Feb and I haven't ran that far in a few years so I'm trying to work back up to it.  However, today is a cross training day so if the weather cooperates then I will be riding outside.  Otherwise, I will be doing a cycling class and lifting.  In the meantime, I did do my push ups (131 w/rests in between 5x sets) today as I am working on doing 100 consecutive.
