The swim workout did take the whole hour. the workout is in my training log and had my hundreds split over a 3 min pace per 100yd.

Hey with where you're at in your swimming I'd suggest that you concentrate on ~2000yds per swim workout. So looking at your log you swam 6x50yds in ~45sec earlier in the week? Am I reading that right?

Go to:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/edit-controlp...

Then click on the Friends Tab and then enter the Friends ID in the spaces provided. Then go to the Privacy tab and select the option:

"Only allow your "friends list" to view logs you have made public?"

That should do it.

Jeremy,

Thanks for the update.  That did the trick.  I've been updating my workout log for about 4-5 weeks so, it's available.  Is anyone else on this team preparing for their first Spring Tri?

So maybe I should ask this a different way. In your workout you have 3x100 warm up. What time did it take you for each 100 when you pushed off the wall to when you touched? The reason I ask is that you said you are swimming at a 3min/100 yd pace but that you can swim 45sec 50's. Just trying to get an idea of exactly where you are swimming wise so I don't give you the wrong advice.

Not that great unfortunately!! It was the Virginia Highland 5k course and I think I underestimated the hilliness of it. Also, I think I was still getting over being sick and my Garmin measured the course as two tenths of a mile too long (I ran the tangents).

Okay, enough excuses, right? Bottom line is I think Im in about 19-19:30  shape right now, but I completely took the first mile too fast (5:04) then died on the the last two miles and came in at 20:14.

I have a question for you. I am trying to sell my bike and am wondering if you have any go to classifieds or other suggestions. I already have it posted on craigslist. Also thanks for pming the swimming info

I LOVE to swim.  Grew up swimming...started at age 7.  It's probably my strongest leg.  However, I also find that open swims are a bit of a "freak out".  I found a group that does supported opens swims at nearby lakes once a month.  It has helps ALOT.  If you can get a group together to be swim buddies, it's a great time and helps to get over the "freak factor".

jsipos - 2008-12-21 2:31 PM Yeah that first tri the parks race at John Tanner is a great race. John Tanner is one of my favorite tri-the parks. I also like the tri the parks at Indian Springs. Another good sprint in June is Buster Britton put on by Team Magic. Buster Britton is near Birmingham and has a time trial swim start and usually a pretty competitive field. As far as swim coaching, one of the athletes I coach is a swim instructor. I usually refer other athletes I coach etc. to her. She's one of the top female triathletes in GA and a very good swim instructor. I'll send you her contact info.

What is a "time trial start"?  I've always wondered.  Does your swim coach live in North Georgia?

If you click on the button for "training log" then look for the calendar on the far left side, you'll see a column of icons, the first one is the control panel.  Click on it.  you'll then see a bunch of tabs.  One says "friends".  Click on it and copy and paste our names.  Hope that helps.

Subject: Upper Body Workout Question? Am I overdoing it as I train for my first tri?

Friends,  I have been working through my Couch to Sprint training program, and I acknowledge my weakest area is swimming, but I'm committed to get better.  I include the leg workout and incorporate my own upper body workout and find I'm still sore when I get into the pool.  Does anyone have any idea if I'm doing too much by added upper body strength training to my workout?  I admit the upper body for me is mostly for aesthetic reasons.

some people might tell you otherwise, but I wouldn't (and don't) neglect strength training. However I must say that these days I mostly do bodyweight exercises pushups, pullups, plyometrics etc. Plus core work, of course. And yes it does make me sore when I swim sometimes so you're not the only one

Is anyone else out there having a hard time loosing weight? I had 24 pounds to loose, lost 6 but now have gained back 3 of them, which means I now have 21 pounds to loose. I would like to get it off before I start my triathlon training, any thoughts? I realize that the answer is calories in/calories out, but I am truely hungry. My stomach growls, I'm cranky if I don't eat, get tired, etc. There aren't enough hours in a day for me to get everything I want to done, so it's not a matter of eating because I am bored. I now have you all listed as friends if you want to check out my logs. I look forward to your thoughts.

That'a a pretty solid time for a 5K especially considering being sick right before. What part of ATL are you in? My wife is also a very solid runner and is always looking for people to run with if you are interested.

I've sold a few bikes on craigslist and it's probably your best bet. The key is to update the ad every two days so that it jumps to the top of the list.

A TT start is when they start people one or two at a time instead of starting in waves or starting all at once. The advantage of the TT start is that the swim is less crowded. The disadvantage is that you don't know who you are racing against since everyone starts at different times.

Yes, she lives on the northside of ATL.

If you are going to lift weights or do any additional strength training, I'd suggest not do it immediatley before or after swimming, biking or running. Give yourself some time to recover from the weights before your other workouts.

I'd say that most people that are training for endurance sports would be better off not lifting weights but adding additional swim, bike or run workouts. There are much better ways to incorporate strength trainining into your workouts that are specific to the sport you are training for. For instance, doing strength work on the bike or in the pool etc.

Two quick items:

1) How do your book mark a discussion thread here in BT?

2) Great article on planning a season.  Just wanted to share....http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/The_ABCs_of_planning_your_race_season.htm?act=EMC-Active&Vehicle=Triathlon&Date=12_28_08&Edition=4&Sections=Articles&Creative=The_ABCs_of_planning_your_race_season&TextName=Read_The_Full_Article_On_Active&ArtText=Txt&Placement=1&Dy=Mon

When my training schedule requires that I do strength training on the same day as a run/bike/swim session, I have found it preferable to do the run/bike/swim session first and the strength training second. I would also add that because so much of swimming well is about good form, it would seem difficult to keep good form if your muscles are fatigued from strength training. Mark
