Visualizing my transition sequence multiple times before hand  helped me alot.  Maybe sit them together and have them close their eyes and then imagine putting their bike shoes on, putting their helmet on etc, the same for t2.  I don't remember anything about my transitions because I was so on autopilot from my visualization.  You could finish with a little calming breathing exercise and the finish line shout!

Cat you are a fine example of what triathlon is all about.  Thanks!

Aaaw schucks... thanks Kathy (KOM)!!

Im going to bring in my bag of gear tomorrow and actually walk through the transitions with them even if they have practiced it... I actually use the visualisation thing myself so I might try it! Thanks for the tip!!!

I talked myself throuth part of my first race with some of the quotes I found here on the site.  Particularly one from Pre :"You can quit.  Noone else will know, but you will"

However, they may not be on here so eachone might want to find a phrase or quote to keep in their mind that works for them.  (ie--"I trained for this, I can do it"

Encourage the earlier finishers to get out and cheer on each other as soon as they have enough recovery on tap.  Nothing cheers up the last one of a group more than seeing that the whole group is still cheering them--and nothing discourages faster than coming in and finding tansition packed up and noone cheering the last finisher.

youve gotten some great responses and im just gonna say, that before my first race a month ago, my wife looked me in the eye said "i love you, im so proud of you. Just run your race"
That was all i needed.

now you dont have to tell your coworkers you love them, but i think the last part was perfect and relevant.

Just run your race, don't worry bout the guy/gal next to you, or the one passing you, one arm in front of the other, one cycle stroke after another, one foot in front of another. you get it.

I will always remember that first race. may not have been the flashiest, far from it actually, but when i sprinted across the finish line, it was the best feeling in the world.

good luck!

I think the best advice I got from an experienced triathlete before my first tri was "You've done the work, now go have some fun".

Great responses so far. One that would have helped me during my first tri was "don't worry if you cannot sleep AT ALL the night before". I was so wired and worrying about being too tired kept me up even more. Didn't matter during the event. Once you are there the spirit will take you. You will sleep well the next night!

I once heard a professional athlete (Jeff Hornacek, former Utah Jazz basketball player) talk about the importance of getting good sleep the night before the night before the big event. With nerves and excitement, etc., the night before can be rough, but good rest prior to that can help boost you through the event.

And, Cat, we only had a massage therapists at a few races, but even after a sprint, boy, does it feel wonderful!

The two comments that helped me most were:

1. You will feel very tired after the swim. Don't quit then, your energy will come back to you on the bike.

2. Do you know what they call the last person across the finish line? A Triathlete.

I pass these along to all the nervous-looking first-timers I see.

So, what did you end up saying? How did they end up doing? Curious minds need to know!
