Nothing is flat about Austin and the Hill Country. It's VERY active as well. Keep in mind, we could've chosen ANYWHERE to live. We didn't move here because of a job, etc. I can't imagine a better place to live. There are many good qualities about New England. But, if I had to choose, it'd be no contest where I'd choose to live. Austin..... |

Every November there is a ride around Austin called Tour das Hugel. After about 110 miles you've climbed 14,000 feet. There is plenty of opportunity for riding hills around here. As a side benefit, the vibe of the participants can't be beat. |

Jester: 320 feet of gain in barely over .4 miles, so avg 15% grade. Beauford: Average pitches up another 1-2%. More seriously, Austin doesn't have mountains, but it's got plenty of hills that will do the job.The Beauford/Jester combo gave me a new understanding of "working hard on the bike" the first time I tried it... didn't even make it all the way up Jester on that first try. |

I'd say the only real downside here is the summer heat, but my understanding is that Boston gets pretty hot and humid, too, so it won't be THAT much of a change. It just lasts longer here. It gets pretty warm starting in late April, early May, and lasts through much of October. And when we have a REALLY hot summer, you're looking at many, many days over 100 degrees (not like Arizona, though). I might also point out that, while Austin is friendly to cyclists, runners, and many types of athletes, we definitely have a high population of good ole boys who have no qualms about buzzing you in their F350 pick ups. It ain't without faults, but it's a pretty nice place to live, especially when you can ride outdoors in January with minimal cold weather clothing. |

While I love it here, I'm completely miserable from mid-December through mid-February with what we affectionately refer to as "Cedar Fever". Allergy medication makes it somewhat bearable, allergy shots will work after about a year, and eventually you develop some sort of immunity to it. Cedar pollen is quickly followed by oak pollen (which is occuring now), then things are good again until mid December. I have a great allergy/asthma doctor if you need one! |

City staff are working on an ordinance right now that would severely limit races. As written right now, the City's right of way management would have the final say to change race routes on no notice and the race would have no appeal to the change. There is a public hearing about the ordinance on Thursday 4/2. |

| Member 27 Austin, Tx | Subject: RE: Talk to me about Austin, TX. The reason traffic is bad here is because word got out about how great this city is. It is the best place in Texas to live. Been here 10 yrs...my hsuband and I have been offered bigger paying jobs in bigger cities but turned them down to stay here and have the quality of life Austin offers. It is totally worth it.

| Regular 57 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Talk to me about Austin, TX. Jorge, Not that I'm any expert on the tri scene but from my limited experience I'd say Austin is fantastic for training. So far I've found plenty of people to train with, great roads to bike, lakes to swim and trails to run. Honestly, had I not moved here I seriously doubt I'd have ever gotten into tri's and would probably still be sitting on the couch smoking and drinking myself toward a slow death. The heat can be pretty bad in the summers, especially this year but with a little flexibility in your schedule you can beat the heat. Now I just need to find a regular training group I can afford :-) |
