Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN It looks like you and I have a very similar race schedule this year! Did you see Longhorn they're planning on doing an arena finish? I enjoyed your race report/blog about New Orleans. I started way to fast on the run for how hot/humid it was that day and certainly paid the price for it. It was a well put together race though, was impressive for how large the race was. Was that your first 70.3? Congrats on the race! microspawn - 2009-04-09 4:37 PM NAME: microspawn / James |

Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN How long have you been following the swim 3x/run 2x/bike 2x? Depending on how comfortable you are with the training I'd probably recommend doing an earlier race like you mentioned. As you start logging your workouts I'll have a better feel of what to recommend BiafraGirl - 2009-04-09 4:38 PM Thank you so much, my first tri will be on October 3rd, 2009. I am still contemplating a try-a-tri or a Mini Tri for July or August. evondo - 2009-04-09 11:02 AM Would love to have you in the group Ony, welcome! IM is definately a huge goal and you're doing the right thing by starting early... it can take years to prepare. Will your first triathlon be this year? Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Interested in Evondo's group - OPEN Congrats on the PR! Some of my friends would love to have that swim time How many times a week are you swimming? tri_sbr_vb - 2009-04-09 5:46 PM I did pretty well, 1:55 minutes (PR) on the 1/2 marathon and 1:08 in the sprint. I was happy with both results and am using those as baselines for this years races. I will start the "sprint to olympic bridge" program next Monday. ANY help on my swimming would be great. I swam 300m in 7:07... enough said! Thanks and I look forward to being a part of what looks like a great group of triathletes. |

Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN Ya I don't think that'll be a problem Nicole from my last mentor group is a Semoinole so we're able to co-exist just don't bring up football. junthank - 2009-04-09 7:02 PM Thanks, and let's go Hokies!!!! After spending the last 6 years in Florida I have found out that Florida State and Florida football fans don't particularily like each other. I don't think we have to worry about Eric becoming a Seminole. Kind of like a Hokie fan rooting for UVA (it's not going to happen). Anyway, like you, I look forward to Eric's group. |

Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN You've done some pretty impressive races, welcome back to the sport! How did you like Alcatraz? Overtraining is so common in this sport. There's a need for hard and difficult workouts (depending on the goals and fitness) but you must have adequite recovery afterwards. stephcat - 2009-04-09 11:42 PM |

Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN I completely understand the hating of pools, I don't think I swam for 5-6 years after college. alsi071 - 2009-04-10 9:58 AM Yes. I stared when I was 7 or 8 and swam all way through high school and 2 years of college. For some reason I completely lost interest and I actually hated pools for a long time after that. I was backstroke swimmer, 100 and 200. |

Veteran 132 Newnan, GA | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN Would love to fill one of the last three spots!! NAME: swise / Sandy STORY: Grew up in FL so loved the beach, lakes, running... lifeguarded in college but never did anything competitive outside of highschool. Since college I have "dabbled" in exercising here and there as life made it convenient. In Fall 2007 one of my husband's best friends was telling me about a HIM that he had done earlier that year. He trained for six months for one event - got burned out and hadn't done anything since. All I could think about was -- if he can do that, so can I - but I'll do it smarter. I started slow (having never stuck to any type of exercise program for more than 2 weeks since college) and just ran. After a couple months and a few 5k races I joined a gym with a pool. After keeping it up over the winter months and still enjoying it I bought a bike. My goal race at the time was to do an Olympic in May 2008. I did a Sprint in April just to make sure I wasn't insane. I met people that live in my area at that April event - completed my May Oly, and have been hooked ever since. FAMILY STATUS: Working (married) mom of two kiddos CURRENT TRAINING: Working toward my first HIM in May (Gulf Coast 70.3 in PCB, FL) 2008 RACES: Did a handful of sprints and two olympic events. 2009 RACES: John Tanner sprint in couple weeks, then my HIM in PCB, FL then handful of sprints and olympics throughout summer - season to end with Augusta 70.3. WEIGHTLOSS: I am blessed that this is not on my to-do list. PREFERRED MENTOR GROUP: people of all skill / experience levels. WHY I WOULD BE GOOD FOR THIS MENTOR GROUP: I have a lot to learn and a few tokens to offer (that I of course have leeched from someone else). |

Member 20 Hermosa Beach | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN Alcatraz was fun* (said several years later). I'm slow, very slow, but I did like the swim -- very neat opportunity. Our swim started off nice & smooth but then got very choppy & the fog rolled in so you couldn't see the shore -- but there were a million kayaks etc to make sure you didn't get off course. The water wasn't nearly as cold as I feared it would be. I thought the bike, though shorter than the Wildflower Oly, was harder. The sand stairs were hard too. I like trail running so the sorta trail parts were fun. Vineman has one of the most gorgeous courses I've ever done. - |

Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN Welcome to the group Sandy! Where did you grow up in FL? I grew up in what used to be a small town outside of Orlando, Oviedo and loved the lakes/weather there. Houston has near the same weather but nowhere near the same number of nice lakes/beaches! You excited about your first HIM?!? What training plan are you following? Do you have any particular goals for your upcoming sprint? swise - 2009-04-10 10:02 PM Would love to fill one of the last three spots!! NAME: swise / Sandy |

Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN Longhorn is a great race... the race director, Keith, is top notch and I'd recommend any races he puts on. The course is definitely more challenging than New Orleans but it's also much more scenic and the run is not all on pavement/concrete which I like. I saw IM Louisville in your races, are you still planning on doing that race? microspawn - 2009-04-10 8:57 AM Yeah - that was my first 70.3 and I learned a lot. Member 62 | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN I have been doing this about the last 4 weeks, however, not as consistent with the bike and run due to weather. Now that it seems like spring is here to stay in NYC, I can be more consistent. I was thinking about doing something earlier, like a mini in a couple of months. This way I can definitely strengthen my technique in all three areas. I started logging. evondo - 2009-04-10 8:59 AM How long have you been following the swim 3x/run 2x/bike 2x? Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN You can get the updates to this tread only by clicking the "Toggle e-mail notification" link at the bottom of the thread when viewing it. I wish the site had the ability to email you when someone 'Inspire's you on the training log but it doesn't that I know of. For those that are new to the site if you look at your training log there will be a 'Inspire Me [#]' at the top of each day where you can see peoples comments. To reply just click the blog button and your repsonse will be on that person's training log for them to see. Sorry if that's all repeat info for some but hopefully useful for others BiafraGirl - 2009-04-11 5:34 PM Does anyone know if there is a way to track only Evonda group emails? Extreme Veteran 373 | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN Yes - Ironman Louisville is my A race this year. I would like to do several shorter races and maybe another 70.3 sometime - but IM Louisville is the big race! I dd a century ride on the Natchez Trace yesterday. This was a long easy effort. The race was well supported with a water / food station every 10 miles. I think I consumed more calories than I burned - they had cookies at the stations. We ended up stopping at miles 20, 40 , 50, 60 and 80 for water, snacks and bathroom breaks. I am excited about getting back into a scheduled training routine. I have not decided exactly which training plan - I'm looking at either a half ironman bridge to ironman plan (only 12 weeks) or starting at the beginning of a plan dedicated to ironman. I'll have to look at the plans more closely - I do not want to lose any fitness. |

Expert 1191 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN Eric & The Team, I'm relatively new to TRI'ing and have found that swimming is my greatest limiter. Although growing up I knew how to swim I was never on a swim team or participated in any organized swim activity. So the 1st time I got in the pool to start training for TRI'ing I was shocked at how bad I was (endurance, etc...). After 6 months of training I have finally gotten to the point where I can "relax" in the pool. Learning how to swim biliterally (3-stroke breathing) helped a great deal. However, I still have a problem of drifting to the left a bit. This becomes really apparent when I get tired. It looks like we have a number of experienced and talented swimmers in the group and was hoping that you might have some tips for me on the left drift issue? Jeff Swimming is tough for us people that did not grow up swimming laps. I'm still working at it and I definitely still struggle - practice, practice, practice! I will start swimming in open water a couple times a week as the weather gets warmer - that seems to really help me out! |

Master 1318 Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's group - OPEN I can think a few things that could cause you to drift but if you can get someone to video you and send it to me I could be of more help... Body rotation can cause it if you're rotating more one direction than the other. It could be pull related too if either arm is pulling more efficiently than the other or one of your arms could be crossing over your center line when you're rotating which is pretty common. Breathing could also cause it if you're pausing longer on one side more than the other, only reason I mention this is you said bilateral breathing helped so it's possible you're not fully comfortable breathing on both sides yet? I'll happily look at anyone's swim videos if you send them to me. I do have an underwater camera that I pass around to the athletes I coach and if/when it frees up I can try to pass it around this group if people are interested. junthank - 2009-04-12 10:24 AM Eric & The Team, I'm relatively new to TRI'ing and have found that swimming is my greatest limiter.
