Well, I was miserably unemployed in L.A. and living off my tax refund ... now I'm taking care of my folks in Indonesia, so it's a full-time job, just unpaid! Living expenses are taken care of though and everything here is cheap so I have a bit of spending money left over in U.S. dollars to get me by.

I did post a thread on "Shady Writing Job"--essentially writing essays for university students--and I wasn't really hired or rejected by either company, but told I was basically overqualified to be writing el stupido essays for college freshmen. They didn't believe I could dumb-down enough. However, I was kept on file for master's and doctorate work.

I've since been re-contacted by the companies for grad-level work and it's certainly work I could do overseas. I am considering it since a few extra dollars would certainly help and go a very long way here.

It's an option, for those of us who are willing to stoop ... seems like a good stopgap job.

I will remember your "shady" skillset for my grad level nursing research class.  It is not particularly difficult but my god, have you ever had to read medical research articles.  I would rather have a vasectomy again!!

For all of you, answer this question. What do you like to do? No bull on this!!  what do you like? Where do you spend your time? What do you think about? What are you passionate about?  Next are others passionate about what you are interested in? And finally how can you help those people?  If you have something you are passionate about and have an idea how to help others to pursue their passion then you have your answer to unemployment.  Go forth and create.

I agree with CBarnes - if you do something you like - you are often successful and in this day and age - the opportunity to create your own job is much greater.  I'm always rethinking and reinventing and in the end it works out.  Maybe make a list of your skills and think about an emerging sector that would benefit from those skills.  It's taking that risk that can be scary.

For example phoenixazul - have you ever considered advertising as a private tutor at the local uni, high end schools or in the tougher schools?  A tutor here can fetch a fair price per hour and it would seem there are two camps - those rich parents that will pay anything to have their kid succeed, and the ones that will go without a meal to afford a tutor so their child can get a leg up in this world.   Or maybe start your own history summer camp for preschoolers.  Walking tours of Glasgow with cool historical facts - plan a day around a walk, lunch in a park etc and advertise it at local schools.  Hire some highschool students to help.  Just a thought!  Good luck everyone.  Tough times everywhere for sure...

^^I did this when I needed to supplement my primary job. I tutored. I made good money too.
But when my income from my first job loosened up, i quit.  It's lucrative if you can find your niche. I used to make up to 300 extra bucks a month with just 3 kids.

Walking tours...oh the irony . *shakes fist at broken hip*

I've got a few irons in the fire. I have made some contacts in a few places to help with tutoring/proofing in writing and I've been trying to hook up with my mother's former co-worker who runs golf tours to Ireland and Scotland. And while I know approximately zero about golf, I sure know a lot about getting around in Ireland and Scotland, and where to get good non-touristy food, and where to see great art and architecture.

It just stinks that there's only so much I can do until my rehabilitation is over. I can't do my normal summer gig teaching swim lessons. I can't do my other normal summer gig as a lifeguard. Can't go back to the USPS as a summer casual. Never realized how much bending/lifting/walking I do/did until just now.

Unemployed since March 3rd. Totally unexpected. Showed up to work that morning and got the "we are downsizing and your position no longer exists".

Going into business for myself now. Screw it!

This is how it happened for me.  Showed up for work one morning, before I even sat down I was called into a meeting with my boss and the CEO of the company.  I knew before anything was said what was happening.  Good for you for going into business for yourself!

X2, hence my sig line.

I was sent a meeting request titled "Workload Balancing." There was an entire group of us. I assume they thought they were being efficient or something. It was the day before I was going to put an offer in on a new house. It was one of the worst days of my life.

I have put out at least 15 applications a day since the day I got laid off. I haven't heard a word from anyone.
