you guys have been spoiled   Those access roads were fine, at least compared to some of the roads I have to ride in some of the other suburbs up there.  1:18 for me, but i think i'll remember this one for stupidly dropping my water bottle on Amstutz. So if you guys saw a blue water bottle... yeah, that was me.

This was my first tri yesterday. I finished in 1:51:19. I enjoyed it immensly and hope to make this a life long activity. Not the greatest time but plan to improve with each race. One comment that I haven't heard anyone mention aside from the road conditions at the begining and end of the bike portion was the water temp. I personally couldn't get use to it even with a full wetsuit on. I couldn't do the freestyle stroke with my face in the water. I'd start to hyperventilate. Other then that, I'm glad I have one under my belt and looking forward to the Chicago Tri which I'm already signed up for.

I was actually surprised that the water temperature really didnt bother me. Not having a wetsuit, I wasn't overly excited to hear them announce the water temp of 58 degrees.

Does anyone else wonder if the swim is in fact a full 800, as it's described on the course map?

I agree - it felt quicker than 800 but I thought I was just going fast!

Joe - the more you practice in open water the better you will do.  I swim most Saturdays at Ohio Street Beach.  It's a good place to practice for ppl that aren't that comfortable with the water bc you can touch the bottom.  LMK if you want to meet up there one day! 

Ha, yeah, the blue insulated one.  I actually stopped, but the people going by said to just leave it, so I did. And had to stare at it longingly on the next loop.

Joe - Was it your first OWS?  You'll get used to the water, dont worry.  I was in the lake in early June this year, and the water was about 51-52, and I had that same feeling you did yesterday.  All I did was keep going in and getting used to it.  Yesterday actually felt really good, lol.

I don't think it was actually 800 yards. There's no way I was going as fast as the time shows!

I almost stopped on my second loop to pick up that water bottle!!!!  I noted that it was a WellFit bottle too...nice.

Seriously, good job all around to everyone.  It sounds like everyone was having a lot of fun this year.  That's one thing I made sure to do so I don't have to think back and replay the race for a good memory.  I needed to make sure that I was having fun while doing the event too.

Oh, as for the bad roads in and out of the harbor area....I blasted at 21 mph on those roads!  Yeah it was rough, but I just didn't care.  (enter Top Gun theme song)

so, this being my first tri.  I have what might be a stupid question but is it normal for the timing computers to be off.  I noticed that some people just didnt have thier splits recorded but it still gave them a finishing time and I noticed that yesterday the top woman had a 22 min. bike and now her name is off the top of the list (corrected time) and there was a woman in 30-34 who had a recorded run of :55 sec. that put her towards the top of the age group.

Is this normal for timing to be off?

Not a "stupid question".  The missing times or weird times on those splits happen when the timing chip doesn't set the sensor off on the timing mats.  There are occasions where the chip doesn't pass closely enough to the timing mat and it never reads a time for crossing the mat.

I'm sure the blog will get more detailed responses once people get a chance to respond....

I've swam at Ohio a few times this year. I like it, but man is it me or does that 1/4 mile marker feel longer? Thank you for the invitation to join you. I'll shoot you a PM or post here the next Saturday I plan to swim at there.

OOOOh!  OK... that makes more sense. 

Started swimming the first weekend in May, the water was insane cold.  May also be why I didn't consider the water that cold this weekend :-)

I followed a woman into the run from wave 12 (I was in wave 6) who was not one of the leaders of the race - and ok, my swim was slow - but not that slow! - and my bike was ok.

It was pretty clear she had not completed the second lap of the bike - when they review the results they catch things like that. They posted the results shortly after noon - so it was pretty clear they uploaded raw data.

I don't know if anyone noticed - but on the map in the packets, they had changed the swim distance to 700 meters - ok, ok - 700 meters is 763 yards - but every yard counts!

i thought the same thing....i put up a much better time than I do at the lake front while training.  I thought that it might be racetime adrenaline but it just seemed shorter.

OK - I note that your post didn't indicate you did Steelhead 70.3 this past weekend.

But your water bottle was there in the middle of the road again! Pretty funny - about halfway through the bike, there was a blue insulated water bottle in the middle of the road. After reading this post before going - I had to laugh seeing that. I was going to pick it up for you - glad I didn't stop for it!
