Regardless I will be there for one or the other. I just started my "official" training last night with a very slow 4 mile run in new shoes which I decided were too small about 2.3 miles into the run. You've gotta be in better shape than I am. I hope you decide to do the full. Maybe you can help coax along slow people like me! Nice avatar...goes with your new run focus! But don't loose the wetsuit one...you look like a super hero in it! Hah! Thanks. You're just saying that because I still have those pictures of you and Kristin getting into your wetsuits... I haven't given up on Tri-ing but have definitely slacked on my swimming... |

Did you run off and marry Meghan already? I know you are talking about October but it was just so exciting to see you call her your wife in print. Hoping your heel is feeling better. The Michigan BT Rawk Squad (all the BTer's on this forum) is an awesome group. You will have so much fun. Meghan better plan on hanging with me. I know all the cool spots to cheer from. |

Member 47 Warren, MI | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread This is funny because I was just looking online for some 1/2 marys, then I stumbled upon this thread!! Currently I am training for my first sprint tri, which is August 16th. I am so excited for it, yet running is my weakest discipline. But, for some strange reason I want MORE. I want to do more and get FASTER. So, I was thinking a half-mary is something for me to shoot for after my first tri. But I am a little nervous. I do not know if I will actually be able to do it, and there is only about 3 months to train. Do you guys think that is enough time to train? 13.1 miles is a lot more than 3.5! How long do you usually train for a longer race like that? Is three months reasonable or should I wait until next year? I would appreciate anyone's opinion on this because I really feel motivated, but am not sure if it is realistic. Oh, and the second part about a room is not a problem for me. I can get downtown in lightning speed. I am about 5 minutes away from 8 mile and i-75! Thanks, Corrie |

If your goal it to finish the race then I think 12-13 weeks is sufficient time. Everything I hear about this race is positive so I'm very excited that I get to run it this year. |

There are many 12 week HM plans from novice to advanced. Hal Higdon's website is a good place to start. Again depends on your goal, finishing or racing. Good Luck! |

Oh, and the second part about a room is not a problem for me. I can get downtown in lightning speed. I am about 5 minutes away from 8 mile and i-75! Thanks, Corrie Good advice so far and yes you can do this. Another great planning resource is Runner's Worlds Smart Coach: https://member.rodale.com/cas/login?service=http%3A%2F%2Fsso.runnersworld.com%2Frwsso%2Fj_acegi_cas_security_check (you didn't used to have to sign up for this, but it is still free). Be honest in how you fill it out and be honest with yourself when you look at the training plan it spits out. If you do both and the mind and body think you can do it, DO IT! If you feel you can't do it all running, think about a Run/Walk approach. Google up Jeff Galloway & Run/Walk for all kinds of info. I did a 7/1 (minutes) Run/Walk for my 1st Marathon as I knew my body couldn't take the repetitive pounding of just running. If you are more of a book person, go find Marathoning for Mortals. It was a great read & I have re-read it from time to time. Last thing, its a little too close, but if you feel up for it, The Crim 10-miler at the end of August is a great test to see where you are at for The Freep (again, might be a little too close for you, but something to think about). |

Member 47 Warren, MI | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread Thanks for the advice. I looked at some stuff online and it seems doable. I am looking to finish and not anything too competitive. Never in a million years did I think I would ever have even run a 5k (which I did my first one last month). This is a BIG step....I think I am going to try it! Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Corrie |

Member 44 Ann Arbor | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread I'm considering making this my first marathon, but I thought it might be prudent to do Running Fit's 20-mile training run on Sept. 26 first and see how that goes. I've never run longer than 13.1. Is it safe to assume that I will still be able to register for Detroit the first week of Oct.? Edited by jeffsab 2009-08-02 7:02 PM |

Extreme Veteran 505 New Boston | Subject: RE: Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon : Official Thread I dont think the marathon sells out, The running fit run is a good run, also might want to try the Milford 30k on Labor day weekend, Tough, hilly, but great training run. You might find a number for the free press and keep track of the entry numbers. |
