Good luck to ya. Everyone here is really nice, and supportive. I have found so many resources to help me train. It's a great site.

Glad your swim went well. I'll let you know how mine goes. Incidentally, I went out with some friends the other night and one girl had just done a tri in our area called the Ramblin' Rose. She gave me some seemingly good advice on the transition. She said if stand up for the last mile to half mile it will be easier on my legs. What do ya think?

Susan - Not sure on the standing up.  I only do that when topping hills, but I'm no expert.  This course is short and all flat, so it shouldn't be too bad.

fitmommy - Welcome!  We have a lot of first OWSs here!

This is my very first tri event EVER. I'm so nervous. I'm really concerned about what to wear. I would really like to wear the same thing for all 3 events. What should that be? I've never followed tri events (or anything associated) and I just feel lost. A friend talked me into doing this, I know that I can finish the course, but I don't want to look so lost doing it. Help, Please!!!!

Well, an addendum to the above. This is the first ANY event for me. I work out alot, but always alone. I've never even ran with anyone until my friend asked me to do this event. My bike is a simple 21-speed Schwinn with flat pedals. I'll be in the back trying to keep up, but what the heck do I wear to ease my transitions? That is the part I am most concerned about.

I did my first (and only) Tri in compression shorts and a sports bra top and wore the same thing thoughout.  There are a couple of photos in my profile.  You can get a race belt for your race number so you don't have to worry about pinning it to anything.

BUT... whatever you decide to wear, make sure you swim in it before the Tri to see if it holds too much water or causes too much drag.  Do not wear cotton as it will hold water.  Some ladies can do the entire event in a swimsuit if it gives enough support for the run.

I'm having a hard time finding a top that is good for both swim and enough support for run, so I'll likely be wearing the same sports bra top I wore last time!

As for the bike, I'm sure there will be plenty of different ones used.  I'm still using a hybrid.  The course is short and flat, so should not be an issue.

Relax and have fun!

Thanks for the tips. I'm a little on the heavy side, so the belly hanging out is an embarassment to me. Do you think a trisuit would be ok? I'm working on the relaxing thing. LOL

Tinarn,

I am using a mt. bike w/ road tires on it. So it will be me and you in the back of the pack.  Just make up for it on the run. It's my first tri as well. If I like it then I will invest in a new bike. I've entered a bunch of runs w/ friends and my hubbie, but the whole tri thing has always intimidated me. Believe it or not I have a HUGE fear of drowning.  I wanted something challenging to bring in the big 40 on Oct. 1st. This seemed more challenging than a half or 10k.  My girls and husband will be there to cheer me on. I have to say that I am totally excited.

Maria,
thanks for the info on what to wear and standing. As far as the support issue, I am severly lacking in that department so it's a non issue for me. A regular tri suit should suffice.  I will be sure to try it out before the ows though.  I have incorporated biking seven-eight miles and then running 1-1 1/2 miles into my workout schedule for about two weeks now. It's actually harder for me to stand than just ride it out and deal w/ the rubber legs when I start running. So I guess that answers that question. I still haven't done my ows though. We had scheduling conflicts with my husbands job, and I'm certainly not going to attempt the first one on my own. He promised this week though. We'll see...

Susan - You can add me to the BOP on my hybrid! LOL  I have one more Tri this season in October for which I'm using my hybrid bike.  But hopefully after that I can start road bike shopping.  Did you get road tires put on?

I was thinking about standing; but it's not easy.  I do not have the strength to do much of that at all.  I guess as my legs get stronger it will get easier.  I'm finally getting to where I can stand some to push up over a hill.  But thankfully there are no hills on the White Lake course!

Trnarn - a Trisuit would be great!  We don't really have any Tri shops where I live, so I have to order stuff online then hope it fits when it comes.  Just make sure you swim in whatevre you choose before the Tri to see how it feels wet.

Another thing I was told about OWS is do NOT just follow the crowd.  Be sure to keep sighting for the buoy.

My chiropractor was in an OWS and heading to the buoy, but people kept crossing in front of him to the left.  He tried to redirect them and finally the one guy looked up and saw that he was off course and straightened out.  Some people just follow someone else and end up off course.

As far as drowning.... I've always been told to just roll over on your back if you get too tired or panic.  You may try it in a practice session.  Just lay on your back, keep your abdomen up, float, and catch you breath (and your composure).  Can also switch to a different stroke if it gets tough.  Breast stroke and/or side stroke is an easy way to keep moving forward but be able to catch your breath better.

One more week!

We'll soon know the answer to that question!!!  Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

I swam it 2 weeks ago.  It was cold at first but quite pleasant once in.

We're going to spend two nights so we can watch the Olympic Triathlon Sunday.  I plan to DO the Olympic Triathlon next year!

Brrrrrrr is right! LOL I don't like cold water! Yet, I'm too lazy to get a wetsuit seeing how it's only 250M. Oh dear... I'm most nervous about the temps.

Anyone going to the race meeting this evening?

Tomorrow, I'll be wearing all black -- a black 1-piece 2xu suit, black Felt road bike, bright pink running shoes. I'll have on a white GOTRIbal shirt post-race (with teal sleeve caps). Try to find me!!! Oh yeah...I'm the black chick--shouldn't be too hard to find. ...will probably wear my hair in large braids/rows. I'll keep an eye out for the rest of you & say hello!

Hey guys,

I am not going to the meeting tonight. I will be getting in too late. I am not going to use a wetsuit either. I'll just be using tri shorts and one of my sister's tops. I have no idea of the color. I will look for you guys too. Good luck everyone.

Hi Ladies,
How did you do? I was there today but avoiding this site for a while because I was discouraged with my training and only getting in 2-3 workouts a week. Wasn't even sure that I'd be able to finish but I did. I loved the course.

Great job camprunner!!! I, too, was almost discouraged. I'm still nursing a knee injury & have missed a few weeks of training (lost my dad recently). I stayed on the boards here to stay energized by the rest of you ladies. I'm glad I pushed through! I surprisingly won 2nd place in my 35-39 AG! LOVED seeing all the ladies out there and the music was FAB!!! I definitely plan to do it again next year. Right now, it's back to nursing my knee. It was hurting pretty badly after the race.

So what's next for everyone??? Dash for Divas was my last tri of the season. I'm doing a metric century ride in Cary in October -- Le Tour de Femme.

I placed 13 out of 42 in age group; 96 out of 440 overall.  Th swim could have been better but practice makes perfect!

OK, I'm going road bike shopping so I can catch Trielle!!!

Great race!!!

You are WAY too kind maria40nc. You ROCKED!!! I can only imagine the things to come for you in the sport. All the ladies did great! Loved the gals with the tiaras, boas & skirts!!!

My swim continues to be my weakness but like you said....practice makes perfect!

"gts" a.k.a. Aquaphor chick blazed it! She was the 2nd place overall finisher. I've learned a lot of little tips from her just from casual conversation in the LBS. If only I had her "gills" in the water... hehehe.

Hey guys. That was sooo fun. Dash for Divas is the perfect Tri for newcomers. I did better in the swim than I thought. It wasn't as intimidating as I imagined. I am now hooked. We are planning on doing one in SC in Oct. The swim is a little longer but I am looking forward to it.
I placed 80th overall. My sister placed 27th. I was very proud of her.

Maria, I am turning 40 on Oct 1st. My husband wants to get me a road bike. I guess we'll both be shaving points next year.

Awesome job trielle. I have to say that when you placed in your age group I was in shock. I thought you were in your 20's! I even told my husband that I had met one of the women on the site but she was real young. What's the secret?  Good luck w/ your knee.

Great job guys and good luck in your future races.

Hehehe Susan....you're my new BFF. I turn 38 in a few weeks. My secret? Clairol Natural Instincts, young kids, and yeh....triathlon. LOL I still consider myself new to the sport (this year was my 2nd season). I've been a runner all my life though. I said the exact same thing as you last year after my first tri -- "I'm hooked." Classic!!!

How exciting to get a new road bike!!! I LOVE cycling now...and love my road bike. I hope you ladies find everything you need, want...AND some!

Maria & I chatted several times the day before and the day of the race. I couldn't remember what you wore Susan. There were so many women there!!!

Please keep us posted in your October tri. It'll probably be wetsuit legal, yeehaw! All the best to you!!!

Hey there!!  Aquaphor Chic here!!  Had a great time at the race, love the women's tshirt!!  How fun was it seeing all the women out there racing??  And by far the best reception to the Aquaphor Samples!!

And how much fun and encouraging were all of the women at the post race?  The cheering for eachother reminds us of why we love this sport!!

Congrats to all!!

Wilmington tomorrow!!
