the slave driver!   My goal is to run 3-4x per week and get 1-2 trainer rides in per week as well.  I am trying a new strategy on the weight...instead of setting a distant goal of 190 (that is the ultimate goal), I am setting smaller goals along the way.  So currently I am trying to get down to 214 by this Sat the 19th.  Then from there will look at being down to 212 by Jan 2nd.

run, run, RUN!  And lose a few lbs while going to all sorts of holiday parties, including two birthdays (one of which is mine!).  Oh boy, no wonder this month is so tough!  At least it is a nice warm 45 degrees and not -30 like in BC!! Sheesh!  I feel for ya achaterbox!

run, run, run?  Lose a few lbs?  How much running?  How many pounds?  We want details and quantifiable measures.

Hey John...I saw you said that people make fun of you for even think about trying?  Unfortunately that is more common than you think, just use that as motivation to prove them all wrong.  Believe me, once you do one (or many) people will change their minds and you'll be able to join the crazy world of TRIATHLETES!.  My wife thought I was crazy and gave me a hard time in the beginning.  Now she works out more than me (not into tri's yet...still working on that).
Anyway, what is your current fitness level?  Do you have any experience in the 3 sports?  Do you have access to a gym or pool?  In my opinion, the best thing in the beginning is to work on your base fitness.  Get out and start walking/running.  Take it easy in the beginning.  Try to make it a goal to do something everyday (even if it is for 15-30min).  If you have access to a gym hop on a spin/stationary bike (or borrow a road bike from someone).  Again, take it easy and slowly build up your distance and intensity.  If you have access to a pool, check with them and see if they offer any coaching.  Better to get your form right in the beginning.
Just use whatever resources you currently have.  The key in the beginning is to not get overwhelmed.  Just go outside (or the gym) and have fun.

That's very understandable.  There is a lot of info out there.  And it is easy to be overwhelmed with it.

Good morning everyone!  I really like mornings.  I get the majority of my work done in the mornings.

Is everyone familiar with the BT training logs?  And "inspires"?

Logs...yes.  Just have to start using them.  Inspires...no.  What is it?  Question on the logs.  If I am doing strength training with dumbbells, how should I be logging the weight?  If I am using an 8 pound in each hand, should I log it as 8 or 16?

I would log it a 8.  The general purpose of the log is to have a record of your workouts.   With a record, you can look for trends or troubleshoot issues.  Just be consistent with the way you log your weights and you should be fine.

Here's an article about the BT training logs.  Link

If you scroll up to the top of your screen, you should see a "Training Log" icon.  This will take you to your training log.  From there, you can input your training for a particular date, blog about the day, input your equipment, etc.

I'm not familiar with inspires (will look into this), but I logged my first workout last night.  I hope I did it right and in enough detail.

I'm very excited about this group, and wide open to suggestions, inspiration, stories of accomplishment, struggle, etc.

I'm mostly concerned at this point, with the idea of an intense aerobic effort directly followed by an intense effort in the weight room.  Are my weight room efforts suffering due to being partly wasted from running?   Also food.  Am I eating enough to feed these efforts appropriately for fat loss and muscle gain?  I'm thinking an hour with a nutrionist would help.  Thoughts?

Cheers!
Patrick

I would agree regarding the nutritionist.

Regarding the weight room and intense aerobic effort - what are your goals?  Once you determine what you want to be/do/look like (body-wise) then talk to a trainer that you trust to set up a plan.

Triathlon training can be detrimental to weight lifting goals and vice-versa.  They can work well together but the result is a different body type then the pure weight lifter or pure triathlete.

Everyone should have an inspire this morning.

If you look at the upper left hand portion of your screen, you should see a new inspire.  Click on it.

I agree with Ken on the nutritionist and trainer (it can never hurt).  Your question about the weights vs tri sports argument is one being battled to this day by very experience triathletes.  One camp says that weights do not help at all and you need to bike/run/swim to improve...while the other says that you need weights so your body can handle all the stresses of a triathlon.  I am sure there is some happy medium in there somewhere.  I would be careful about doing an intense run and weight workout back to back.  On a day you do heavy lifting go easier on the run/bike (maybe do a 10min warmup before the weights and 10min cooldown after).  On a day you do intense running, go easy on the weights.  If you want to do 2 intense workouts in one day, maybe do one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

In my own workouts, I barely lift.  I should probably do a little more but I just don't enjoy it.  When I do lift, I focus on using lighter weights, high repetitions, and really focus on using good form.

For those that have questions about food intake, you can check out many websites on the internet where you can log your food and workouts.  I occasionally use www.thedailyplate.com (it is part of Lance Armstrong's livestrong) just to get an idea of how many calories I should be eating and generally how I am doing.  You enter your info and how active you are and it will tell you about how many calories you should be consuming.  You log your food and workouts and it adjusts based on your activities and weight.

For those that don't know where the logs are...on Ken's (awesomely cool) screenshot, you can see the blue notebook at the top labeled "training log" (it should be visible on just about every page your on).  When you click on it it takes you to your log page.  From there, you can see about a weeks worth of days down the middle of the page.  On each day is the word "training" (this is where you will also see the word "inspires" where people can leave you little words of encouragement) which you can click on and it will take you into the details of your training for that day.  From there you can enter in all your workouts, plus lots of other stuff.  Play around in there as there is a lot you can do.

Two more screen shots.  One of the top of the BT page showing the Training Log icon.

The other of chichitao's training log.  He has an inspire for today, he worked out yesterday (and logged it) and it shows his total workout time for the last four weeks (bar graph).  Many more features on that screen.

Play.  Explore your space (sounds artsy, doesn't it?).
