Name: Lisa

Family Status:  Domestic Partner and a cute little dog named Cooper.

Story: I was on a swim team when I was 9-11 and swam the longer distances in High School which were probably 100-400M. I used to run in my early 20's I ran 10Ks, Half Marathons, and one Marathon. I used to run about 50 miles a week in that period. I got injured with some calf and shin issues, started cycling for a few years after but eventually found myself on the couch.

I'm 51 now and in the years bewtween mid 20's to 50 life got in the way, I would sometimes bike, swim  walk, run a bit but never really got going. I ended up gaining over 100 lbs from where I was in my early 20s. In May of 2009 I signed up for a sprint for August. Got on the bike, joined the Y for the pool, started running a bit, just kept going and adding on to the point where I now usually do at least 2 workouts a day and usually workout 10-12 hours a week.

I have arthritis in my left knee, I am seeing a sports med Dr. about it and have had gel injections in that knee. Losing weight has made it better but it is the one thing that worries me and I have to be careful with running as I can easily injure the knee and that can be painful and interfere with my training.

Current Training: I swim at least 2x a week and have just started winter swim training with a local tri team, run 3-5x a week and cycle 3-5x a week. I have a bike on the trainer for the winter and have been doing spinervals. I also take pilates, aqua aerobics and a bootcamp training class. I am going to check out a CrossFit class for the first time this week. I am going to have a tri coach starting in January.

2009 Races: All sprints -Danskin SheRox Triathlon Philadelphia 8/2/09 (due to weather changed to a duathlon), Trek Women's Tri Mt Snow, VT 8/9/09, Trek Women's Tri Metro NY 9/13/09, Tri Fitness Tri 9/21/09 plus Greenwich Point 1 Miles OWS 7/18/09

2010 Races/Goals:  I'm moving up this year to Olympic and Half Ironman. First I'll travel to Florida for St. Anthony's Oly in late April, a possible sprint in late May, Rev 3 Oly in CT June 6th, and Timberman N.H. 70.3 August 22nd. I am also considering Mussleman Aquabike in July (HIM distance) and Tri Columbia Skipjack (1.2 Mile Swim , 64 Mile Bike, 10 Mile Run) in September and a half marathon sometime late winter-early spring.

Weightloss: I lost 50 lbs. since March 2009 and hope to lose 50 more by sometime in 2010.

Lisa

thank you so much for sharing your story with us!

I too suffer from arthritis in my knees - i'm a firm believer in run/walk intervals and in fact my pace has improved over the past year from 14:30 min miles to between 11:30 and 11:00 min miles - all the while doing walk run intervals

i know this will be a great group for you

Lee—Welcome to BT, welcome to the Manatees, and congrats on your little girl!

Art—It’s so good to have you back. You know we always love our Manatees.

Mia—congrats on the weightloss and getting active! Beth and I have both also rehabbed from stress fractures … it’s no fun!

Dineen—welcome and congrats on the road races! Slow is GOOD. (And it’s relative, too … someone’s always faster, someone’s always slower, so … you’re JUST RIGHT).  Danskin is a wonderful tri series and I’m sure you’ll have a great experience. Beth and I are swim mavens so you have come to the right place!

Cortney—welcome! Glad you jumped right on in. Tell us a bit more about yourself soon!

Lisa—great to have you and your goals sound excellent. Congrats on the weightloss—I know what it’s like to be at that halfway mark of the 100! You’re amazing!

Do you have room for one more?
I'm in New Zealand (southern hemisphere) so it's summer here, and I've just done my first little tri a couple of weeks ago, loved it, have the bug, and am trying to train for another one in february.

I'm a 34 year old single mum of 3 (10 years, 8 years and 12 months).  I've never been athletic, but after baby number 3 (caesarian number 3 too) with lots and lots of extra baby weight, trying to juggle kids and working, I really really wanted to do something that gave me a sense of achievement.  Also people laughed at me when i first told them

anyway can post a more detailed bio if you have room for me to join?

Melyssa, there is ALWAYS room for a Kiwi Manatee ... especially if you bring pavlova. I have actually found a place here in Bali that makes it and I always stop by if I'm in that neighborhood.

Congratulations on doing your first tri!

Hi again,

Fun. I think we will make a great group.

I don't know when my first tri is going to be, but I have my eyes set at a tri close to where I live in NC. It's a small one I think, in Lake Lure in August.
If thats my first I don't know, maybe I'll do one before that.
My, or should I say our plan (my husband and I) was to do a tri together the first time as a relay team, with me swimming, him biking and me running. We will see if we do that or if both of us want to do the whole thing.

/Mia

Both do the whole thing!

Actually, do whatever suits your schedules best so you can train and have fun. If you do a relay, the worst that will happen is you have such a great time that one or both of you wished you did the whole thing and it will only increase your appetite to do a tri

NAME: Cortney

FAMILY STATUS:  Married 7 years, 8 years in February. I have an 8.5 month old daughter

STORY:  During high school I was very athletic.  I played basketball, soccer, and ran just for the fun of it.  I later joined the Marine Corps after a year of college, and basically worked out in some form everyday.  I was at my lowest weight in the Marine Corps at 125lbs. My fastest mile was 6:45 and my fastest 5K was 23:01.  I was later diagnoised with chronic bilateral shin splints, and that's when everything took a turn for the worse.  I stopped working out and I put on a lot of weight.  In 2006 while my husband was very busy with work, I started working out again and decided to do triathlons.  I lost a total of 25lbs during the year.  I never went on a diet, I just decided to become more active.  In 2007 I did 2 triathlons but I put back on some weight.  In 2008 I did a half marathon in February and then later that year I became pregnant.  I did do many walks while I was pregnant but no races.  I've never been a swimmer or a biker.  Because of my shins, I use the run/walk method which seems to get the job done.

2009 RACES:  I have done a couple of 5ks this year, but nothing serious, I just went out and walked the course.

2010 RACES:  My husband is deploying to Afghanistan in 2010, so I have decided to try and get back into triathlons while he is gone to keep me busy.  I'm going to hire a coach, because I'm basically starting from zero.  For 2010 I just want to do sprints and possibly an Olympic at the end of the year.  My goal is just to have fun.  I've always been a BOP, but I'd like to think one day I would finish a race in the MOP.

PlayTri Festival (My first Sprint)
Disco Sprint Triathlon
Take the Heat Sprint Tri
Austin Triathlon (Sprint/Olympic
Stonebridge Ranch Sprint

I may do a couple of 5ks, 10ks, and maybe a half marathon, but we'll have to wait and see.

My goal is to do the California HIM in 2011, and possibly an IM at the end of 2011 or in 2012.

WEIGHTLOSS:  This is the heaviest I have ever been.  My doctor put me on a medicine that had the side effect of weight gain, and I gained a lot of weight.  I have since stopprd taking the medicine and I'm trying to take the weight off.  I've been run/walking, strength training, and biking.  I've limited myself to eating out once a week, and I'm slowly weaning myself off the bad things in my diet.  I don't have a set number of pounds I want to lose in 2010, because that may set myself up for failure.  I just want to become healthier and more active, and that should help shed the pounds.

Mia:  it sounds like you and your husband have a great aproach.   if you decide to do a team approach, a suggestion might be to find one that's gives  you enough time to do one indivitually as well, cuz i bet you'r going to love it

Cortney:  thanks for the great introduciton, you have some excellent goals - Yanti and I can both relate to weight loss goals, and Yanti has a most inpsiring story.  i actually have found a technique that really works for me - it's the jeans approach and i don't weigh myself, let me know if you'd like more detail about my crazy little plan

A thorn among roses....

I must have deleted some of my first post so I'll fill in some details.

Family - I'm 45 and will be married 25 years in May. No kids of our own, but stopped counting nieces and nephews when we got to 50 (no kidding).

2009 started off well with a couple of sprints. An unexpected meeting with a Dodge Neon threw off my scheduled HIM in August and I lost focus (always wear your helmet!).

2010 - Planning on a couple early sprints, signed up for an HIM in June (Eagleman) and IM Wisconsin in September but I have a lot of work to do to get there.

I've got another 20-25 lbs. to lose before I'll feel good about wearing one of those cool tri jerseys...

I'd like to hear about it too, the jeans method that is.

Today I did a 12K walk and run in 86 min, it was my first long run since my stress fracture and I felt good.
Last month I walked 11K in 91 min and my legs hurt more from that then from the run today (my hamstrings and butt hurts).
I have bought a pair of compression socks to use when I am flying, but I decided to test them out today for my run.
Oh, I love them! So comfy and soft and no pain, no shin splints.

You ladies...and Reid ... are very lucky to have the 2 coolest Mentors on BT.  They are my favorite girls and you will learn a ton from them and their ability to motivate and be there when you need them is unsurpassed.

As a former Manatee...x2 sessions....I couldn't recommend them more.

Love ya, Beth and Yanti.

Hello Manatees!

I'm Lynne, just turned 38. Married to Ron almost 12 years. I'm originally from Scotland but have lived in Washington since 1998.  No kids. 1 dog and 1 bird. Both nuts.

2010 will be my 4th season!  I'm an avid swimmer, mediocre biker and slow runner.  Combine all those 3 though and I'm hooked! I did my 1st triathlon in April 2007, it was indoors.  After I finished I came home and signed up for SEVEN more.  Then I decided to try more running and swimming events.  So far I've done 4 half marathons, tons of 5 & 10Ks and trails runs here and there. Even though I'm poop at running I'm determined to get better at it. 2010 starts of for me with a half marathon.  WTH?

6 months I quit smoking.  Fantastic. BUT I've gained almost 15lbs. Booooooooooooooo.  So I need motivation for that and inspiration and the drive to keep going despite my hard feelings towards myself sometimes.

I am signed up for my 1st 70.3 in September next year.  Depending on if I'm in the States or not I'll be swimming my 1st 5K in Lake Washington. I swam across it last year and the year before that! Good times. Other than that I'm going to see how things go monetary wise.  Races are expensive! I'll do what I can next year. Concentrate on that 70.3.

Mostly my goal is to get my head around proper eating habits and to quit thinking that just because I ran say 9 miles that it's OKAY for me to consume an entire jar of nutella.   Mmmmmmmm nutella.

I'm so glad to part of this group!  Looks like a fabulous bunch of people.
