texashorne - 2010-04-14 10:53 AM I'm more worried about the hills than the wind to be honest.

Are we crossing a couple of overpasses?

I remember a speed-bump or 2 heading back into the park...

roadrhino - 2010-04-15 1:18 PM Kathy, a lot of the Houston-area folk go here:
http://288lake.net/

It's very close to Hobby Airport and about 30-45 minutes from Galveston. The water in no way replicates Offat's Bayou, but if you are just looking for the feel of open water, this is a great place to go. Water temps there have been in the high 60s.

KathyG - 2010-04-15 1:08 PM I'm hoping for about 60 and no wind..how likely is that?

So I heard we can't swim prior to the race. We fly in Friday and I would like to 1 or 2 ows in before the race Sunday. Are there other places down there protected to swim?

It takes me usually a couple ows to feel comfortable each spring don't' really want first ows to be the race.

Can you elaborate on that? I've been OWSing at both 288 and Twin Lakes, in what ways does Offat's differ in conditions, just so I am prepared and know what to expect?

The bayou is going to be salty and murky...your visibility under water will be very limited. In comparison, 288 Lake is fresh water and very clear.

Offats is Salt water for one thing, so more buoyancy. Also much less clear than either Twin Lakes or 288.
After swimming in Galveston Bay last weekend for the Gateway Sprint on Saturday and then at 288 Sunday, will say that the Bay was much 'warmer' relatively speaking than either 288 or Twin Lakes.

Also Offats is much larger body of water so if there is North or East wind much more chop will build as we leave the shoreline at Moody Gardens.

Going to be fun for sure

Thanks - that helps. I grew up swimming in the Pacific, so salt shouldn't be a problem and I'm used to swimming in actual "waves" too. I'm only doing the sprint, so I figure I can survive anything for only a 1/3 mile (I hope!)

I'm really bummed about no swimming before the race.  Sucks.  I guess we could maybe swim before the sprint or olympic goes off on Saturday.  I was looking forward to swimming out to the first turn buoy to get a feel for the water and salt and everything before race day.  Guess not.

straight off the "athlete guide" from the lonestar website....

Pre-Event Swim Advisement
The majority of our events are held in locations
where the swim course utilizes a body of water that
is open to the general public for swimming, boating
and other recreational and commercial activities.
Ironman wishes to caution all participants that
it does not provide lifeguard services prior to the
event, and that all participants who swim prior to
race day will do so at their own risk.
While we make reasonable efforts to inspect the
swim entry and exit points for underwater hazards,
the inspection does not take place until just before
the swim discipline starts. Participants are further
admonished to exercise caution and use common
sense if they elect to swim prior to the event and to
be mindful of underwater hazards. Keep in mind
that this is a natural body of water and is subject to
hidden hazards including, but not limited to: currents,
underwater obstructions, tides, rip currents
and indigenous marine life.

seems to me like we may be able to swim on friday...just at our own risk.  i'm still gonna try to swim there friday, but if i get the boot, i may just jump in the canal that our rent house sits on.

I may be in the minority, but bring on the rain! Just nothing that is going to alter the race in any way. I love competing in a nice cool light rain.

When John (fattyfatfat) talked to Moody Gardens... they will NOT allow us to enter the water from their beach (palm beach or dock).

You may enter Offat's bayou from another point outside their property - such as a boat ramp off of (61st or 63rd street)  or something similar to that. Not sure on the safety of such an entry/exit point or the amount of boat traffic on the waterway.  Just be safe!  Good luck.

Grew up literally 2 miles from those boat ramps. Would advise caution in swimming there. There is much boat traffic and the water is typically oily from boat exhaust in the busy season.
Would be more concerned about the 'safety' of swimming from potential of cuts etc. as the bottom there is pretty nasty.

Just my 2 cents.

I am sure it will be like last year and you will see allot of people swimming before the race, but I think what they are saying is they are not responsible for any thing that happens to you before the event starts.

They tell you no to cover their end, I doubt anyone will stop you.

This whole week weather.com has been saying that Saturday the 24th's weather will have a 40% chance of scattered thunderstorms. This morning, nothing but sun. What is the deal?

Forecasting the weather is the only job I know where you can be wrong 80% of the time yet still be employed.

Sunday is looking warmer every day.  Today says high of 85 but winds at 4mph. On Saturday night's 10pm news I will believe the Sunday forecast.

KathyG - 2010-04-15 2:52 PM Thanks for the ideas...

We are flying Southwest into Houston and arrive mid day Friday.

I have noticed that most Ironman's in US aren't doing Gatorade Swims before the races due to liability issues I guess this is just an off shoot of that.

Race morning will we be able to swim before anyone starts or before our waves go off?

Great airline.Embarassed When you get to Hobby, ask for Joe and say hi.
