Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() libramom - 2011-01-03 9:34 AM Hello, I would like to join your group if possible. I work full-time, teach yoga, and have two young boys, but I still feel motivated to train as much as I can for my first sprint tri in August. I've always said that I could never run and would consistently get side stitches after just five minutes of running. After seeing my husband complete his first tri last summer, I was determined that I was going to do one as well. I joined a couch to 5K and completed my first race on Thanksgiving. I am so excited about running now that I am doing a 5-miler race this Sunday and plan on doing a 10K by March. I bike and take spin classes and swim a couple of times a week, however, I know that I need to be a much stronger swimmer for the race! Looking forward to getting some tips from you! Thanks, Erin Welcome Erin! I have a secret......I hate Yoga!! LOL ![]() Nice work on the running so far! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got some good news for myself this morning. Thought I'd share. I was cleared to swim again!! I've been out of the water for a while. A flight I took from Boston last month ruptured my ear drum. It, of course, got infected and I had to stay out of the water for a while. I have pretty bad allergies, so I guess I had some sinus issues while I was flying and the pressure didn't have anywhere to relieve. So it blew out my ear drum. I didn't think anything of it for a while. I was actually on my way to swim for the first time after the vacation and decided to go to the doctor instead, since my ear bothered me. Anyway, it looks like it's healing up and the doctor gave me some drops and told me to get some ear plugs for swimming. I seem to have so many sinus and allergy problems I think I'm going to start wearing a nose plug too. Even if I look like a dork! ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Meulen - 2011-01-02 2:25 PM dandr614 - 2011-01-01 5:27 PM Rich, Congratulations my friend, you are already a triathlete! That's quite an accomplishment on weight loss as well! How are you losing the weight currently? Are you on a specific diet or plan? Are you tracking your calories? I'm glad to see you have some goals set for yourself for 2011 already. I'm sure you can get to Savage Man in September as long as you commit to the time. How are you currently training?Brian,
I would like to join your group if possible. I am a 40 year old married male living in Deep Creek, MD. I started tri's in 2010 and completed 2 sprint distances in August as well as a 15K in October. I started weight loss 2 years ago at 292 pounds and currently sitting in around 220. I would like to drop another 30 pounds during the course of this year if possible. I am 6ft3in, pretty active and feel like I could use some help in the nutritional areas. I plan on running 2 sprints, 2 Olympics, and hopefully Savage Man HIM in September. Thanks in advance.
Rich Brian, I am not currently on a specific diet plan. I try and eat clean (fresh vegetables, fruits) while keeping protein high. I have not tracked calories as I would probably be shocked. I have counted carbs at times. I am currently training through a plan here on BT with a specific olympic training plan starting on the 16th of January. Looking forward to any and all advice. Thanks again. Rich |

![]() | ![]() Hi my name is Erin and I was wondering if I could join your group? I did my first sprint triathlon in may of 2010 and loved it. I havent done any since then but i ran a half marathon in september. I am pretty slow but I would really love to improve my time. I def. need to loose weight and that is part of the slow factor. I am a lifeguard so I am able to swim when i want to and that is my strongest leg of the race. I just started to take a spin class at my gym and i own a hybrid bike now but am thinking of getting a road bike in the future. thank you for your help, Erin |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Your in Erin! Welcome! That makes ten guys and girls. I'm going to close the group here. Tomorrow I'm going to make us a table we can copy and paste into our log. It will have all the names of people in our group here and links to our logs. That should make it easy for us to check in on each other and leave encouraging inspires. Part of the mentoring program is encouragement of others in the group and helping one another also. You guys are going to run into lots of helpful advice. Feel free to post it here and help each other out. Hopefully, we'll all become friends here. Use this thread to converse among yourselves too. It's all about having fun!! ![]() |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for having me. I am not sure what help or advice that you can offer me. I guess swimming is my worst sport. I started to get into shape in Jan 2010 and have transformed myself. Now I look at the triathilon as a test of my work. I train 6 times per week right now. Just started the log. Really like this website. Thanks for any advice you can give. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning group!!!! OK, we need to get some discussion going in here. So....while I work on our table for the log links, in the meantime it looks like we have some swimming problems. Here's a couple of suggestions: RT: 1st, It's really hard for me or others in the group to give advice from behind a keyboard. One thing that helped me was getting into a Masters Swim program. Check out the website and see what's available by you. http://www.usms.org/ This will get you infront of people who can see what your doing and analyze your stroke. 2nd, If that's not possible, try and get a video of yourself swimming and post it here or in the open forums. There are lots of people here who can be very helpful, and we do have a couple of swimmers in our group that could probably give some great feed....hint hint swimmers in our group! ![]() 3rd, I'll give you guys this link again because this site has soooo much good reading. www.swimsooth.com 4th, get out there and swim!!!! Most coaches will tell you to swim 3x per week or more to see improvements. You could go to the challenge forums on BT and participate in a challenge to swim that much this month, or we could do it among ourselves too. So who's up for a swim challenge this month? I am definitely up for the swimming challenge. You suggested swimming 3x per week- how many meters do you suggest per session? Let's not focus on distance right now. Some of us are going to be at different levels than others. Let's just focus on time in the pool. Let's see who can swim 9hours or more the rest of this month....sound good? |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Sweet...thanks I'll do this right now! Just a quick note - my username is JCambras, not JCambros, so you guys know if you punch it in. I'm also in for a swim challenge this month, though I think I'll be hard pressed to do 9 hours. Quick question - how many miles do you think one logs in a 50 minute spin class? I really have no idea how to compute the miles. I can give you my watts and RMP's if that helps. Better question - does it really matter or should I just log total time? |
![]() ![]() |
Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 9 hours or more? I'm in! However, this will be a challenge since i spent a TOTAL of 45 min in the pool in 2010. |

Better question - does it really matter or should I just log total time? My apologies Jon. I corrected the spelling and added the link now that your logs are public. Thanks! I would take a good guess at mileage. You're right, it really doesn't matter. But, I usually like to guess anyway. That way at the end of the year you have a pretty good idea what all you did mileage vs. time. Spin classes are usually pretty hard efforts. If you road for 50 minutes outside at a hard effort, on your regular route, how far would you go? I would go with that. |

However, this will be a challenge since i spent a TOTAL of 45 min in the pool in 2010. cool!! you can do it! It's just time! If you guys have a hard time swimming for all that time do something else. What I mean is, there are other drills that don't take much effort and get you comfortable with being in the water. Getting comfortable in the water is probably one of the most important things about swimming. It will help you relax, control your breathing, and you'll be able to concentrate on strong consistent strokes. You can do : skulling drills breathing drills- let your breath out till you hit your butt to the bottom of the pool practice flip turns practice water entry if you have a that has a wadding area whatever!!! just spend time in the water! ![]() |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the info Brian. Any pointers you can give me, in regards to Triathilon training or use of the website is appreciated. I haven't really got a program that is set right now. I just try and combine swim, bike, run into my days. I have sort of been training for a year now without much purpose other than getting into shape. I was 215lbs and dropped to 185 doing Tai Bo. lifiting weights and KettleBell workouts. I started to gain the weight back, not in fat but muscle. Currently I am back to 200. I am trying to lose more weight so I started to add Bike, Swim, Run into my program. This seems to be working. When I started, I could not run half a block without stopping and being out of breath. I can easily run 10k now without stopping. I started my first bike ride at 5 miles and couldn't go further. Now I can bike 25 miles without to much trouble. My swimming practice was done in a small pool in the apartment complex that I live in. I just upgraded to a 25 yard pool at the UC college where I live. My first triathilon is comming up in March. I can devote 12 hours a week to training. Will you check my log occasionally and give me pointers? Thanks again for having me. This will really help. Dale. |

I'll be keeping an eye on everyones logs. ![]() You should look at the free plans here at BT. A lot of these plans are not feasible for people, including me. I need to be more flexible with my workouts because of work, life, etc. But take a look at them anyway. Look at corresponding plan the distance race you will be doing. They'll at least give you an idea of the volume you should be doing. If the plan for your corresponding race seems like it's too easy, don't be afraid to look at the one for the next level race higher. It certainly won't hurt you if you are training for an Olympic race and doing a sprint. A lot of people have good success doing that. |
