Grilledmonkey - 2010-12-23 2:56 AM Oops i didnt use the template when i posted above, here's mine now Laughing

Name: Frances

Story:
I've played team sports forever, predominantly cricket and field hockey. Since moving down south though sports dropped off the bandwagon pretty quickly, really dont know why, although i have been playing beach vollyball for the past 5yrs.

A few years ago i decided to try cycling to work to save on fuel and instantly fell in love with it. My bike is nothing special, its mtn bike x road bike (which makes tri's a little tougher haha). Since then i have become the Wellness Advocate for my workplace and so am constantly looking out for ways to help people get/keep fit. One of my colleagues brought into me an advert for a Womens Triathlon....and that was the beginning!

Family Status: Single.

Current Training: I train most days of the week. I definatly could use some direction on training. I currently swim mon and wed mornings, but im very slow so am only doing 600m in half hr. I cycle to work 3 days a week (which is 8km return) and then do a 20km cycle on sundays. I have plans to buy a real road bike over xmas and will join a cycle club. I run 3 times a week, this is also something i need to work at, i only manage 2kms. Swimming and running ive only been training on for 2mths, neither of which i have done before, so total beginner.

2010 Races: Nina's Womens Triathlon (Nov)

Planned 2011 Races
:  Bunbury club Tri's (Eaton x 2, Wellie Dam), Hillarys Womens Tri. Thats this summer (being in Aus im in Summer now), i havent thought about longer term for 2011 yet, mainly as for 2mths next spring i intend to be trekking the Bibbi track.

Weightloss
: I have lost 10kg in the past 6mths thanks predominantly to the Tri training but also im starting to get a handle on portion control (although rather hard when training makes you hungrier haha).

What Will Make Me a Good Mentee:
I'm virtually a blank canvas, ready for instruction, so i can get out and take on these Triathlons!

Welcome aboard!  Its awesome to have someone who gets to race now (up here in the northern US its freezing and snowing).

Portion control and long workouts are tough, I'm usually famished post-work out.

We're at 10 now, so we'll take a few more before we close out.  Below are links to everyone's' blogs.  For me, one of the biggest factors in improving is keeping up with my training log.  I find that it helps me to be much more consistent and BT has some really nice logging features.

Fantastic!  20:30 is also my goal pace for a summer 5K (I'm supposed to go 22:50 this January and then work down to 20:30 by July).

When you get back, let us know a little more about you.

I really need to start logging my workouts over here again.  I log in-depth at another fitness site I was a senior member of prior to switching to triathlons.  Currently trying to figure out how long to go on my long run Sunday.  I ran 13.33 miles in 1:56:58 last Sunday.

Hello, everyone!  I'd love to join this group, too.

NAME: jarvy01 / Jennifer

STORY:
I grew up playing sports - swimming, basketball, volleyball, and tennis.  I was a naturally gifted athlete, and I didn't have to train hard to do well.  The problem was that I didn't have the heart back then.  I wished I were smarter....not athletic.  I continued to exercise throughout college and graduate school, but it was mostly for weight management.  I got married in 2004.  My husband and I had 4 children in five years - 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2010.  I've always been fascinated with the sport of triathlon, but I've never been a runner, so I scoffed it off as a pipe dream.  After I had my last baby, I was sick of feeling disconnected from my body.  I started the couch to 5k program last July.  Now I'm running close to 40 miles a week.  I love the way I feel when I'm running & swimming.  Love it!  I plan on becoming an Ironman in 2013.  I rescued the athlete inside of me, but this time I have the heart & the physical strength.

FAMILY STATUS:
Married with 4 children - Conrad (5), Margaret (4), Gordon (2), and Frederick (10 mos.).

CURRENT TRAINING:  I've focused mostly on the running the last few months.  I love to swim but find it hard to get to the gym with the holidays.  I'm lifting & running this month, and then I'll be starting a half marathon plan & bike base building program in Jan.  My Christmas present to myself is a new bike (well, and a trainer & new running shoes).

GOALS:
Summer of 2011 I am competing in 3 sprint tris & 1 oly distance (Chicago).  Summer of 2012 I'll be competing in 2 HIMs. Summer of 2012 I hope to be ready for an Ironman.

2010 RACES:
only did running races - 4 5ks, 5 mile, etc.

2011 RACES:  Cleveland 10-miler in April, Cleveland half mary in May, Findlay sprint tri in June, Huntington sprint tri in July, Greater Cleveland sprint tri in early August, and Chicago oly tri in late August (my A-race).  I will probably pick up another half mary in Sept.

WEIGHTLOSS:  I had 4 children in 5 years, so I had a bit of weight to lose.  Running has taken me down to my pre-children weight.  I am 6 lbs. off from race weight, and I'll lose it easily (probably more...).  I am 5'9", and I have a muscular body, so it is nearly impossible for me to go below 135 lbs. and be strong.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:
I have lots of questions & I'm all ears!  I have a lot of motivation (something you have to have to do this well & parent at the same time).  Because I have such a busy home life, I need to be held accountable, and this group will help me do that.

Nice to meet you all.

Yes, I think I can easily take some time off the 2:52 half time.  I was sick the week before races and liquids running through me 2 days prior, so I knew there would be dehydration issues (lots of cramping, almost too me down) and IT band pain popped up and that was unexpected.  I would have expected 2:30 or 2:40.

Thats why I want to get out and do another and get that monkey off my back

Questions:

  1. Is this the forum we will be following for updates, inspiration etc?
  2.  Is there where we should post questions for others to see your answers, or do we PM you?
  3. What shall we do for training plans?

So if anyone wants to come to CT in the freezing cold and snow, I have a group mountain bike ride tomorrow morning (Xmas Eve), prob a 2 - 1/2 hour ride, climbing Mt Misery (it's not really a mountain, but it's a great view into Rhode Island).  It's about a 15 mile loop, but pretty technical.  Can't wait.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season.

Ok!  Now that we have a full group, what are everyone's plans (both training and playing) for the weekend?

I'm looking at a swim-bike today, some running tomorrow (but before the run it'll be a homemade french toast breakfast), a long-ish Christmas bike on Saturday and then a long run (possibly in the snow) on Sunday.

To top it all off we have family get togethers on Friday night and Saturday, so a busy weekend.

well, I've got work tonight and tomorrow, then off Sat-Tues, so a little different than most, I'm sure.

Today or tomorrow, I'm going to get in a run of 3-5 miles (I always tend to just go with what my body is doing that day, if I need to bail early, I bail).

Saturday - Tuesday I'll run 1-2 times and bike once for sure. I think Monday or Tuesday should be good weather for biking, so I'm hoping for a 30ish mile route, maybe a little more. Also one day will be ice skating.

Got a decent ride in this morning.  Tomorrow and Christmas are off days per the wife.  Sunday I'm going to get a long run in and probably get the wife started running.  She signed up for a 4 mile race out of the blue which is a minor miracle on it's own.  Family wise we're taking the girls out tonight to look at lights and see a cowboy Santa, tomorrow we're hanging with the girls and going out to dinner, and Saturday is lunch w/ the in laws.  Undecided  The whole time I'll get grief about how much weight I've lost and how I look like "one of those Kenyan runners."

I'm going to run long in the morning (12 miles?).  I'm hoping to run outside, but it's been freezing!  Husband will be making homemade french toast & sage turkey sausages while I'm gone, so I'll probably eat my calorie deficit when I get back from the run.

My husband wants me to take Sat. off and focus on the family.  It's really hard for me to do, but I have to take one for the family here.  I'll make up for it on Sunday.  I plan to go to the gym and get in another swim.  I wish I could get to the pool 3 times a week, but it's not happening right now.  I'll have to pick up the swim slack in the spring/summer.

Oh, yeah, I've gotten a lot of negative comments about my increasing weight loss from family members, too, and it's so annoying.  I'm the only one sitting around the table drinking water, too.  LOL.  My FIL is always handing me a glass of wine.  Oh, well.  Whatever.

Funny how that happens.  My parents are happy for me because I think I was over 200 lbs at age 9 and they know how horrible a childhood is for a fat kid, but my in laws don't get it.  Why would you put yourself through that kind of pain (in reference to tri/marathon training)?  Don't loose too much weight because you won't look like yourself.  Ugh.  Like you said "Oh well" can't win them all.

While I've only lost around 25#'s, I've gotten nothing but good comments so far.

I'm still overweight, though, and plenty left to lose (5'9" and ~212). I haven't seen south of 200 in about 17 years

My family doesn't really get it with regard to weight loss.  I have 20 - 30 lbs to go in order to get to racing weight and I have lots of people who don't understand that mashed potaoes and wine don't really help.

Its tough balancing family and expectations and trying to stick to my nutrition.

NAME: pbrown70(Paul) you can guess my last name.

STORY:
Growing up I played any and all sports but mainly the big three baseball, football and basketball. In college I played footaball and tennis. Injuries always found a way to sideline me. I have had both arthoscopic and recontructive surgery on my knee and recently have been told I need both a knee and hip replacement. I however have other plans. I've never done a tri but, have always wanted to. So, here I'm am.

FAMILY STATUS:
I am married and have three children. A beautiful 8 yr old girl and two boys age 5 and 15 months. A Pug (Bugsley), a Bird (Irving), and a Ginnie pig (Ellie).

CURRENT TRAINING: Just started swimming and running and in the process of putting the bike I bought online together( right now it looks like a pile of lego's spread out on the floor).

GOALS:
My main goal is wieght loss and to complete my first tri.

2010 RACES: none

2011 RACES: So far I would like to do the M.I.T. open to other events if the opportunity presents itself.

WEIGHTLOSS:  I 'm currently at 240 lbs I would like to get down under 200 a wieght I haven't seen since college.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:
I will do anything I need to do to get to my goal but, because I know nothing about training for a tri I'm in extreme need of both direction and I’m sure I'll need a push for time to time.
