powerman - 2011-07-10 8:19 PM Well I'm a newbi to tris. Signed up for the series this year... got off the couch in Nov. Did the Oly today... did well, made my goal... but for the first time I am actually "scared" of the 70.3. I'm not worried about finishing.  I have been training for a goal of 6 hours. It is possible after todays race.... but all I could think about on the run was that I was going to have to double it in 3 weeks. Reality is setting in.

Just pace yourself and you will be fine.

I am starting to get a little more excited myself now that it is getting closer.

I love the 70.3 distance..... I did sprints my first year, oly's my second and now Boulder will be my 3rd 70.3. The biggest mistake I made the first time was running too fast off of the bike and blowing up about mile 9. The second race was much better, I actually had to force myself to slow down on the early part of the run, but I was able to push hard the last three miles....... so I agree, just pace yourself, soak in the all the exciement of it all........ and have fun.

Yes, I am in Logan UT..... we're practically neighbors.    Clock is ticking down to Boulder. I'm feeling good, but after reading some of the previous race reports, it sounds like heat is a big issue. I've been trying to focus my workouts between noon and three to get some "heat" training in. Still have to deal with the whole altitude change, but Logan is at 4500 ft, so it may not be a huge issue. Think I may go up to bear lake a few times the week before and do some brick workouts where their altitude is around 6000 ft. Not sure if that sort of thing works, but it'll help me mentally.

Thanks for the info, extreme veteran! I guess I'll use my trail shoes for the run....and bring my wetsuit for the swim! I have been doing some heat training here in vegas, but I doubt it'll be 105 degrees by noon there in boulder! Just some tips for anyone interested - do a small portion of your workouts in heat/high altitude, just to get your body somewhat conditioned. But those 2 factors - heat and altittude - put alot of stress on a body that is already stressed from training volume. the majority of your workouts should be at cooler temps/lower elevations so you can get the most out of your workouts (in regards to speed/wattages/etc)...case in point - I did a brick run yesterday in 103 degrees, at noon, and could not keep my HR down in my aerobic zone AND maintain my normal, usual pace for that zone...my pace was about 2 minutes slower just to keep my HR below my anerobic threshold...just my 2 cents worth!

Definitely bring the wetsuit, but I personally would not use trail shoes for the run.  It's dirt/gravel road, and you'll be fine in regular runners. The only shoes I would avoid are any that tend to pick up rocks.  I love Mizunos, but they are bad about this.  Learned that lesson one year

You might, however, want to have your trail shoes for hiking or running some of the trails around Boulder before or after the race.

So true about the heat.  Did a run at noon yesterday at a prescribed heart rate, and it was tough trying to run slow enough to keep my heart rate down in the zone.

Quiet around here!  Esp given that race day is fast approaching.  Hard to believe it's under 2 weeks at this point!

I think I am about as ready as I am going to be now. Leaving on Aug 2nd and staying in Louisville. Doesn't look to be to far away from the race site at least on the map. Hope everyone else is ready to go!

I heard the water temp at Boulder Res was up to 77 degrees last weekend........Regardless I'll be wearing a sleeveless wetsuit, because I don't own a swinskin/speedsuit. the pockets on my trip top would create some serious drag in the water.

Aha.  I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get a hotel in Boulder tonight.

Now I see...

Have fun Sunday.  I did this race back when it was the 5430.  Only PR I set was in tire changing unfortunately.   I'm in town to do the Horsetooth 10k swim on Sunday.

Heading there to do a swim in a little bit. Interested to see what the temp is. If it is warm enough that wetsuits are not allowed there is going to be some panic on some peoples part. I brought a speed suit just in case.

According to the lady at the front gate the water temp is 74. I did a very short swim, before they kicked everyone out due to lightening.

I was at the Res this afternoon--Ironman village is going up!  I'd be a lot more excited if I weren't in a surgical boot, though Undecided

Every year its borderline wetsuit water temperature. Magically on race day it is always .5 degrees below max wetsuit temp.
