Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always liked gewurtzaminer. If I had a choice, that was my wine. Don't drink much anymore, but could always make a good impression with any gathering of people, as most had never had it before and always enjoyed it. Never thought it could live up to the word "peppery" in describing it, but it did. As Renee put it so well, any wino, er wine enthusiast who hasn't had it before should check it out! But back to food: if you haven't had a pork shoulder that's been grilling for 7+ hours with a vinegar mop sauce after 24 hours with a aji habanero marinade...well, you just haven't really lived then, have you? Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hollis, you funny girl. I enjoy the Ruffino Chianti. Chucky/Chris, I believe the Gigondas (Domaine la Machotte) was a syrah or syrah/grenache. It was very good and not as heavy as some of the australian syrah's I've had. I recently had a Taltarni (australian) which I've had good experience with in the past but it was way too peppery and spicy. They need to dial it back a bit. The Gigondas was very good. Very good. And I think it was $8 or $9. Kevin, last week I had this appetizer: Grilled shrimp with crispy polenta cake, artichoke olive leek tomato ragout and lemon basil vinaigrette. Eating it was a spiritual event. My entree was a Veal milanese with roasted fingerling potatoes, mediterranean arugula salade, shaved tomme and veal thyme jus. 'Twas like getting a glimpse of heaven, having that food in my mouth. Washed it down with a Gamay. Cleaned both my plates. Edited by Renee 2005-09-29 8:10 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ChuckyFinster - 2005-09-28 6:41 PM What the hell would the French know about wine? They've only been making it for 2000 years! Of course if he was buying... ![]() The best wine I have ever had was this 5 Euro half bottle of Chateau de xxxx (don't remember the name) Bordeaux that we ordered at a cheap Italian restaurant somewhere in Paris. You know how some red is really alchohol-y and hit your tongue really sharp. This one is smooth. Hmmm... Other than that, I don't know wine at all. My favorites used to be Beringer White "pink lemonade" Zin or supermarket Muscato. |

Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Denise, in Mondovino the director flies to Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France, US, talking to winemakers and sampling their wines. The 2 that struck me the most was a guy in Argentina who had a dirt floor home and bottled his wines himself; the look on the director's face when he sampled his wine made me want to fly to Argentina immediately and find this old dude. The other one was an Italian winemaker; not near as poor as the Argentinian but he had a very similar spirit/ attitude towards wine and life. I'm going to ask my sis (who lives in Italy) to try to get her hands on some of his wines. Mondovino - must see! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Taqueria Cantina & Burrito Joint. I have been to Chipolte and Freebirds and this place is about even with Freebirds and blows Chipolte out of the water. I know I will inflict the wrath of the dark side but I didn't think Chipolte was that great. But it was pretty good for a place that is owned by McDonalds. I know there are some people here from the Tampa area and they can back me up that Taqueria Cantina & Burrito Joint is awesome. After my Tri on Saturday I picked up a Super sized Steak burrito. It was about as long as my forearm and as thick as my calf. Awesome. |

Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Christine, yes, it's SOHO. I'll meet you there. When do you plan on going? It's a small joint on the east side of the street, just a few blocks south of Platt. Cold beers await! p.s. What's yer recipe for the marinade? bts Those poor bastards! Next time, switch it up with a Scotch Bonnet...that's how I get my friends twice with the same joke. I had the same thing done to me back in the day by a friend's mom (they are Indian). She wouldn't tell me what type of pepper it was, but it was as hot as the habanero or Scotch Bonnet. She dared me to eat one half, which led to a solid 10 minutes of eye-watering...then sweetly put her homemade curry in front of me. Talk about twisting the knife! As for the marinade, that's a well-kept secret...well, unless you have Steve Raichlen's book. ![]() And Renee--that does sound amazing. Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Since we are on the subject of burritos, I'd highly recommend el Tepeyac in East LA: http://dinesite.com/info/rstrnt-252068/??&t=0 Famous for their "Dirty Diaper" burrito which is not described and I don't believe it is even on the menu. A big burrito that covers the entire plate (think 3 oversized flour tortillas) and then the "dirty" part of the diaper is a thick pork stew/sauce covering the entire thing. You're a stud if you can get into the diaper let alone finish all of the chunks of pork from the sauce. One of the few reasons to head into east LA. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Distribution-wise Total Wine is the equivelent to Wal Mart. They have enourmous buying power and can buy in such bulk that they get breaks from distributors. Making their prices untouchable to independent stores. So they have great prices but you kill the local economy. So its the same choice as everything else these days. Save a few dollars or support the community. On the other hand Total Wine does have a fairly knowledgable staff and good prices. |

Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I like their vast French wine selection. And their prices are great! Charlie's Wines used to be my favorite - the older dude with the gray peppered beard, I forget his name, used to give wonderful wine recommendation. Zaca Mesa, Stag's Leap, Frog's Leap, Acacia chard. Then there was that money laundering mess... Sidebern's is a lovely shopping experience too (that's where I used to buy my Charles Heidsieck champagnes) but I don't go in there much anymore. Too bad Giancola's went out of business. Edited by Renee 2005-09-29 2:10 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a friend from Paris. His parents started a wine cellar for him when he was born. They have stocked it with a case or two every year of really rare, small vintners in France. These are wines you can't get here. Whenever he went home for a visit he brought back a suitcase full of the most spectacular wines I have ever tasted. He, his brother, Janice (when she was in Atlanta) and a bunch of friends, relatives, expatriots of France, Viet Nam, and Macon got together for the Fernwood Supper Club at my apartment in Atlanta. We could all cook. It was the sort of evening that George Sand and Chopin would have loved. Serious wine, serious good cooking, and some not so serious political discussion. This is what life is all about. TW |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I knew that. My French friend is too young for you ... or maybe not. He and his brother are in China trying to get a software company started to develop and market the brother's software for MEMs (micro-electro-mechanical) devices. It is based on the brother's dissertation. They both would pass your IQ requirement. TW |

Now you have to plan meals or snacky snacks around the wines. If you say any combination of "burrito" and "wine" I will personally fly to Tampa to and while you are not home: a) Remove all wines from your domicile for safe keeping. b) Remove your all forms of identification from your wallet so that you will not be able to purchase wine for as long as it takes for you to get replacements. c) Leave a Taco Bell Burrito Supreme wrapper on your pillow. Don't tempt fate! |
