New user 3 Auckland | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Hi there, I have also just joined this site. It has an awesome setup in the training logs and it would be great to be able to chat with people about training and things. I did the She women's tri (formerly Special K) in January and now I have entered the Sun Latte tri at the end of Feb next year. Is anyone else just starting out? It would great to here how you are going. Gillz |

Member 20 | Subject: Any other NZers? Welcome to the site. I'm new to tri's but am enjoying the training. I am training for the Tauranga Half Ironman and have completed two of 20 weeks of training. There's plenty of info and training programs for whatever distance you want to complete. Here's a bit of advice: If you miss a session, don't try and catch it up. Just forget it, it's gone. Move to your next training session. One more: Listen to your body. If you're stuffed, give training a miss. |

Veteran 216 Auckland | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Hi Gillz Welcome to BT, you will find a small group of us hanging around, KellyG (at the top of the forum) is based in Christchurch and has done some of the Southern Special K's and Sun Latte's so would be able to give you more advice about the events down in your area. Regards Guy |

Member 20 | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Hey Guy, Yup booked in for Tauranga. The 20 weeker is going ok. Everything is good apart from the swim - the mileage seems huge. Everything else is ok. A mate at work has done a few IM's and apart from the swim, he thinks its on the mark. Takes a bit of planning to get through it all. I sit down with the wife on Sunday nights to work out who wants to train when. Catch up a bit closer to the event. Henry |

Hey Guys and Gals, just thought I'd pop in here and say hi again - did you notice there are heaps of NZers on this site, but none of them post or use their training logs..... so if you know anyone who needs a good logging site send them over here! I know a lot of people use Sportzhub etc to chat on but it would be nice to have some more regulars on here from NZ ay! |

Member 20 | Subject: Any other NZers? Hi all, Completed the Auckland Half Marathon last weekend in 2.35. Slow first 5km, back on track by 10km but found the 16-18k lag a challenge. Calf tickled as I climbed the bridge, so had to take it easy to ensure I finished the race. Great day. Straight after I completed a 30km bike ride. Corporate tri this Sunday at Bayswater. First tri -bit scary |

Veteran 216 Auckland | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Good effort at the Half on Sunday Henry, Sunday's Tri should be good have you had a chance to check out the course around Baywater ?. I found it good to get their early and walk through the transitiion to understand where the exit the water, go our on the bike and run. Good luck for Sunday and see you there (I will be wearing a North Harbour Triathlon top and riding a yellow/grey Scott bike). Guy |

Member 20 | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Thanks Guy. Rode the tri course on the way home, after the run on Sunday. Looks fast as long as we don't get a Sou Wester. I didn't notice until I entered the corporate tri, but did you see the individuals dont start until 10am. 3 hours after the teams take off and 4 hours after the transition opens? I've emailed them to see if I can go off with the 7am starters because 5 hours out your weekend is huge. I managed to get sponsorship deal with Hammer Nutrition so I'll be wearing red Hammer gear on a red specialised bike. I joined the NH Tri club as well and will be putting in for some club gear soon. Might see you Sunday |

Veteran 216 Auckland | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Welcome Claire, Have you decided on your first Triathlon yet ?, there's probably only a few left this side of Winter. The Panasonic Peoples Tri's are a good introduction I think the next one is April 29th at Mission Bay. Guy |

To start off with I was wanting to do the SHEWomens triathlon and the special K duathlon... I just have not yet found out when they are. |

Member 20 | Subject: Any other NZers? And now we have three kiwi's. Welcome Claire and congratulations on getting into triathlons. Guy and I have been around for just over a year and have met up at a couple of triathlon races. I got into triathlon because I put on heaps of weight and did nothing for 5 years. I couldn't run 300m 18months ago. Since then, I've completed the Auckland half marathon, a sprint tri and a half ironman. Ironman 2008 is what I'm building up for right now. You will love the process of getting fit and also seeing your body change. After 6 months people will notice the difference. After 12 months, people will be in awe of what you can do. Swimming can be improved quickly by spending time in the water. Join a tri club or swim school to sort out your technique (Huh! there's an action for me to take as well). You'll have nothing to worry about once you get into a wetsuit. Getting the right size bike is important. Nip along to Avanti, Multisport Bikes or Kiwivelo to see what is available. Avanti are affordable, the other two start getting a bit expensive. Find out what size bike you need. Then jump into trademe and see what is available in your size. You can get a good bike on trade me from $400. Go for a roadbike setup and the more carbon the better - because it will be lighter. Running Shoes - go to places like Shoe Science and get fitted up for running shoes. You can expect to pay around $250. But what you can do is take notice of the brans and model and check out Rebel or Ebay. Henry |

I'm lucky because quite a few of my friends teach swimming... so that will help I need to get new shoes... and I will get a new bike before the triathalon... and looking at doing a morefm triwomen triathlon to get started... But now i really want to go and train and get to ironman standard! LOl... |

Veteran 216 Auckland | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Claire, I agree with what Henry say's, joining a club makes organising training easier and finding out about events, nutrition etc. Depending on where you are based in Auckland there are a number of groups, North Harbour (NHTC.org.nz) are well organised, they have two senior and a junior group. Most people will look at a key event for the year (for Henry & I that is currently Ironman) and then pick keys races as build-up events. For this years half-Ironman our build-up events where the Auckland half-marathon, bayswater triathlon, a couple of panasonic tri's and the tinman olympic distance at the Mount. Now is a good time to be thinking about events for next summer, if you did want a taster of a triathlon the mission bay one I mentioned has a try-a-try category which is 100m swim, 5km bike & 2km run all on the flat. A lot of women start with the Women only series and if they get hooked and want to go onto longer distances look at other races around. There is also a womens only tri group run by Lorraine Scapens www.adrenalints.co.nz I wouldn't worry too much about Ironman just yet, unless you want to get into Triathlon competitively and progress through most people doing Ironman are in their very late twenties/early thirties and upwards mainly due to two factors. Firstly cost, Ironman is expensive from gear, training, physio, nutrition etc and can cost in the region of $5 - $10k and secondly the massive toll on the body. Guy |

35 | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Hahaha, awesome, thank you... I'm pretty sorted with nutrition... I mean... I know what I should be eating.. .what to eat in training, precomp, during and post comp.... have done nutrition as part of uni... but yeah... the training would be good... I'm on the shore so NH is good... Hahaha, I know about the general age groups etc for Ironman.. we are studying triathlon and multisport in my managing and marketing sport and recreation paper at uni... So we've been through all the stats etc... I probably wouldn't even consider doing it untill my twenties... |

Member 20 | Subject: RE: Any other NZers? Take a look at the Ironman site- Results. It has a whole lot of data that might interest you and assist with your studies. Look forward to seeing you progress. If you ever want some inspiration, head down to Taka Beach -Boat ramp at 7am on Saturdays. The tri club go through a brick session that lasts around 2-3 hours. Good luck with the bike. Don't try to go too hard when you start out. Spend more time in the small chain ring to avoid knee injuries. If you feel a bit of pain down the front of your patella, back off - DONT GRIND - SPIN |
