How do BTers affect your life? (Page 2)

Damn, a woman who has everything. All the perfume, all the books.....crap.

Best of all - really nice friends who want to send me books and music. Big slice of happiness.

How about A Son of the Circus? It didn't really do it for me.

If you haven't read The Corrections [Jonathan Franzen] yet, it's well worth it.

This year my goal is to not read a book that sucks. Now that I've burned through the 20 Master and Commander books [Patrick O'brian] last year, I'm on a hunt for good books. Patrick O'brian was a great writer. Even if you're not really into nautical historical fiction, the quality of the writing is top notch.

I know I'll read some more Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I know that I won't read the DaVinci Code (because I am 99.9% sure that it sucks) but I think I'll be looking into some Irish authors, all that rain and such a history, they've got to have some great ones.

Read that when it first came out. I liked it - but I'm the only person I know who did like it!

I love his convoluted yet converging plots.

I've read all his novels except the last two.

Well, it may not show from my own writing, but I've done a ton of reading in my life. I've read so much, it has happened that I've read more than a hundred pages of a book before realizing that I'd already read it.

After all of that reading, I've become snobby discerning in the quality of the writing. So, pulp fiction writers just don't do it for me anymore. People who share my love of good writing have told me that The DaVinci Code is just not up to snuff in terms of the quality of its writing. I know the story seems to be very compelling, but I'm looking for something more that just a good story, I'm looking for something that challenges and moves me.

One day, though, I'm sure I'll be marooned out in the country or something, and the DaVinci Code will be the only thing around to read and then I'll have a look.

Charles Palliser ( Quincunx ) and Caleb Carr ( Alienist, Angel of Darkness ), if you're into historical fiction.  Both good authors, IMHO.

DaVinci Code is a fun escapist read.  Literary masterpiece?  No.  Fun?  Yes.

I agree with runnergirl.  I also know I can find something to make me laugh and feel better on days I am down or having a hard time.  It's great to have a huge support network when needed.
