Congrats on your first build. You'll never buy a machine built by someone else!

In my experience RAID is a major pain to install. You have to load the RAID drivers with a floppy. Partition Magic doesn't like it. I've been a long-time user of Ghost and RAID just wasn't worth the hassle for a home machine.

I have two 250 gig Seagates that I picked up for RAID but now use my second drive to swap my page file and Ghost/BU my data. Personally I love Ghost. I feel much safer screwing around with my system. Whenever I make modifications, update drivers, add/remove programs, I Ghost away and my back is always covered.

I put all my 'system' software on C: (including most programs); games on another partition; my docs on another and all my media files on one more.

When I do Ghost it's generally my system drive. But also use it to occasional backup my other data.

My take on Ghost anyway.

OK, can someone elaborate on the page file/swap file partition? Where can I read about that? Do I need a 2nd internal drive for this? Right now my 2nd drive is an external enclosure...I had bought it to back up data on my old (crappy) computer, but never got around to it, so it's brand new still.

THanks for all the info on Linux stuff. I'd like a copy of the extra ubuntu, I can PM you as soon as I clean out my inbox

Hey Bear -

Here is a link regarding the page file and how you might optimize it:

This is nice if you are doing a new XP install:

I like to tweak my setup and then Ghost the tweaking I've done. Then if I ever screw up XP and need to reinstall I can just Ghost it back all tweaked out without all the hassle of starting from scratch.
