suzimmer - 2011-12-26 11:46 AM Did a killer intensity workout on the new treadmill yesterday.  Today, trying desperately to shed the lazy morning and get my heiny on the trainer.  Hoping now that I've made that public, I will actually go do it. Laughing
New treadmill? Nice! and now I know how to spell heiny...

Yes, new treadmill and it's way cool. We had one that finally died after 10 years.  Got a great deal on a Nordic Track 1750 on black friday. Has an android tablet built in.  Can check your email and get your workout done at the same time. Tongue out  I actually prefer to run outside, even throughout the winter, but there are days that just going down to the basement is the better choice. And I like the new toy.

And I'm only guessing  that's how one spells heiny.  Perhaps I should say tush.  Spell check knows that one.

I bought one last winter ...fell on a night run in summer, 2010 that left me with a hernia that I wound up having to take along for IM Wis. because to stop for surgery meant to cancel IM 2011.  So it gives a great alternative when icy or dark.  Also, the treadmill is great for hill repeats since we have so few around here.

Yes, I do like the hill workouts on the treadmill.  The biggest "hill" we have around here is the overpass on the bike trail.  This treadmill has some great pre-programmed workouts.  It also has I-fit so all the workouts are logged on to your computer.  You can also "run" routes from around the world.  So, since I've been playing with all the stuff this can do, I've been inside, which is sad since the weather has been fine for outdoor running.

Hi Stephanie,

I'm very interested in joining your group if you still have room. Here are some details about me...

Name: Kim

My info: I live about 4 miles outside of Boston, MA. I've spent the past year getting back into shape by hiking, backpacking, running, and both short and long-distance cycling. I've lost almost 30 pounds but have about 30 more to go. Despite being overweight, I'm in better shape than I've been in most of my life... except for 2008, which is when I backpacked 1,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail. When I came home, though, I gained some weight. 2011 put me back on the road to fitness, and 2012 will be my first triathlon...I'm very excited...and nervous!

I'm 42 years old (will be 43 when I do my first tri), and I've been married for 9 years. We have a great cat named Smudge who doesn't exercise at all unless it involves catnip!

My resolution for 2011 was to run at least one 5K race every month. I missed a couple of months in the summer due to work, but made up for it by running more than one 5K in other months. I'm not a fast runner, but I have improved my 5K time over the past year by about 14 minutes. I run approximately 3 1/2 miles every other day and cycle frequently...even in winter. I'm most anxious about the swimming, but I just signed up for freestyle swim training/ classes to improve my technique and comfort. The classes start Jan 9.

Races/ events in 2011: 5K almost every month; Boston to Provincetown one-day bicycle ride (130 miles completed in 10 hours)

2012: hoping to sign up for the Nantasket Beach Triathlon in Hull, MA

Can't wait to up my training and complete a tri in 2012!

Kim

Welcome Kim!

You sound very focused and deliberate, which will serve you well! Great job taking the swim class, technique is everything in swimming and the cross training will help your running immensely. SO COOL on the Appalachain Trail hike! I ready Brysons book on it and it was hilarious.

Winter cycling near Boston must be interesting...brrrr. A 14 minute improvement in 5k? wow, that's huge...nice work!

Good luck with your first try and let us know when you sign up!

Welcome Kim.  Your cat must know my cat.   Triathlon is awesome fun and the cross training helps when it comes to weight loss.  You will love it. Appalachian Trail sounds so very cool!

Thanks Stephanie and Iceman! Words of encouragement are always motivating! I just went out for my workout today...a 3 1/2 mile run. I'm scheduled to do a First Run 5K on New Year's Day, and I hope to post a good time (my best time so far is 34:29, not very fast.).

Do you have any tips for strenght training for a tri? My legs are pretty strong from cycling and running, but my upper body strength is only so-so. I'm guessing push-ups are one of the exercises I should be doing, along with my swim classes which start on the 9th. Any other suggestions? I can only do about 20 push-ups right now.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how everyone's progress is going and hope I can contribute to our group as well. Good luck everyone!

Thanks!

Kim

20 pushups is pretty good. I try to do push-ups every day.  I also try to do some core work such as planks and sit-ups on the stability ball.  When I'm at the club I have started doing pull-ups.  UG! can only do 1, maybe two unassisted.

Hi,

Not sure if my initial attempt to post went thru, so I'm trying again...  Would like to join the program, if you still have room. I just signed onto BT.com, and am getting ready to start training for my first triathlon in April (Rumpus in Bumpass -- Virginia). I've done some 5K and adventure racing but recently encountered some heel problems, so I've not run since early November.

I'm a 45-yo married mom of two, just looking to get back in shape and cross triathlon off the bucket list. Thanks in advance!

Isn't it interesting how quickly the fitness goes and the weight come on after 40? Good for you getting RIGHT back on the horse!

Glad to have you! Which Tri do you want to do first?

OK we've got 10... plenty of room for more and remember to add everyone to your friend list HERE'S HOW:

Choose TRAINING BLOG CUSTOMIZATION

With your friends in your log, you can look at their training logs and race logs and send them “inspires”. Kind of a fun way to say GOOD GOING! The inspire button appears on their training blog as you view them.

Also, choose a training plan, whether or not you follow it religiously, it will give you an idea of what kind of work you'll need to do to complete the race you choose, with some level of comfort. You can always write over the PLANNED workout, but just logging in your ACTUAL space. That's what I do. I just log the work there and hit 'save', it will write over the planned workout.

HERE WE GO!

Looks like it will be another great group.

Welcome to the new ones and welcome back for the returning McFuzzies.

I'm very busy this time of the year, my work (Cleaning/Maintenance at a Mall) is very hard this time of the year. At least no snow here in NC yet. Also, my wife got a new job and is adjusting to her schedule, my mother in law came to spend 5 weeks with us (yey!!! :-)) and my teenage son (stepson) decided that we (wife and I) suck and he if leaving home to go live with his father in Brazil, his plane ticket (present from the Suck Santa Parents) is for Jan 13th.

I love the kid but glad he is moving out. the only problem is the wife and the daugther that are already missing him.

Anyway, I will try to keep the update on the log (if I ever be able to run before him and the in law move out) and checkin this group as often as I can...

Again welcome to all and let's have a great 2012

Stephanie,

I'd like to join your group if I could.  Here's some info about me:

NAME:  Maggie;  Indiana

STATUS:  37 year old, divorced w/4 kids (13yr old son, 10 year old son, 8 year old son and 6yr old daughter).  I am in constant "go" gear and wouldn't know what to do with myself if I was sitting still. Oh, and I have an adorable Morkie named Lulu.

STORY:  I have never competed in a triathlon before, but it has been on my mind for the past couple of years.  I love working out and getting a good sweat on.  Finding time/making time for myself is something of a challenge, but I try to get to the gym on a daily basis - lucky for me it is equipped with a pool, cycling classes and additional classes to get the blood pumping.  Being fit and healthy has always been important to me - having 4 kids it is equally important that they remain active and healthy, especially living in Indiana in the winter when all you want to do is hibernate.  I enjoy challenges and teamwork, getting to know people and hearing about their goals.  Finding a mentor group is just what I need to keep me motivated and on track.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I have not completed any races up to this point.

GOALS:  I love swimming, as I swam competitively as a young girl and in high school.  I can do biking, even though it's not my favorite.  However, running and I don't get along well.  Finding a local group to run with would probably make it less grueling for me.  My goal is to complete a race sometime late spring or early summer, or as soon as I'm ready.  I'm excited to get a plan in place and stick to it.

I am not sure where to start at this point - this website can be a bit overwhelming - there is so much information to digest as a newbie.  I also have a way of overdoing it and I don't want to burn out.

Life is spectacular and too short to keep waiting to do what is within your reach.  So, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and diving in.  I look forward to the journey with everyone.

Here's the promised profile for those who don't know me already.

Name: Angi - live in Peoria Heights, IL

Status: 41 Divorced with 3 children - two still at home.  14 year old son Chris and 21 year old son Alex.

Background: Very active with the Boys Scouts, love the outdoors but not particularly athletic.  Actually more of a book worm. Last year while dreading the approach of 40 a fellow scout leader got me started on hiking and then persistantly mentioned running.  Finally in October of 2010 ran for the first time - two whole blocks before I gasped and died.  Decided this out of shape crap was not who I wanted to be.  My friend got me on BT and in a mentor group and I stuck with it.  Celebrated one year of running this October with an 8.25 mile trail run and followed it up with a 10 mile trail run the same month.  40 never looked so good   Have added in biking which I greatly enjoy and struggling to add in consistent swimming.  Took swim lessons with my 14 year old son last year and still struggle with becoming confident and fluid in the water.

Goals: 50 mile trail run in April - why start small?  Trail running is my love.  Confident swimmer by June High Adventure trip with the Boy Scouts.  Would also like to do a tri this year so to that end more swim lessons and finding my inner mermaid.  Besides the April Ultra my goals are flexible and fluid.

So happy for you that you are enjoying your running again! I need motivation too, so I thought 'hey, why not do a mentor group?' and here we are. I would like to do a 70.3 this year too but I have to see how the running goes. Wow, I just said it...

Thanks for joining! Run run run run run....

Welcome Maggie and your fantastic attitude!! Yep, the run was my issue...still is. I think you have a huge advantage as a long time swimmer...I know so many people who have no comfort with the water...can you imagine? It still blows my mind ... I'm so happy my Mother dumped us in swimming lessons as little children all the way through high school!

NICE GYM...pool and everything, that's so cool! Yes, definitely find a running group. IF only for the long runs and long bricks on the weekend. With 3 boys... holy moly... I just don't even know what to say... I had three brothers, and I already feel for your little girl!!!

stephsprint - 2011-12-29 3:47 AM Click on the wrench at the top of the page ‘settings’ Then you’ll see a row of settings down at the middle of the page OK we've got 10... plenty of room for more and remember to add everyone to your friend list HERE'S HOW: Choose TRAINING BLOG CUSTOMIZATION Below that click FRIENDS There you can add the names of anyone with whom You’d like to be able to ‘inspire’ and share logs with whether they are in our group or not! Eurasn1 - Fred Oak73 – Okey Suzimmer – Susie Ricmachado – Rich AZBarnett – Kristen Deehtz – Dee TriCyndiLoowho – Cyndi IceManScott [email protected] TeeMoe With your friends in your log, you can look at their training logs and race logs and send them “inspires”.

Yep this looks good already in here! I'm sure having the stepson of your mind will be a welcome break for you for a while. Good learning experience for him too.

CHEERS!
