Went to the race site on Wednesday and bricked the bike and run courses. The hill out of transition is not that bad. It's mainly a bunch of hype.

Umm what hype?  We just let people know it is there and to prepare for it.

Here's a video of the bike start:

Tongue out

Seriously though, if you look back at Brian and my posts about the start, I wouldn't call it hype at all- there is a hill at the start. It is short and not overly easy. People fell down the year I did it because they were not clipped in and in the big chainring. Don't do that :-)

That video was funny. wow - what a hill!  Glad I am not doing that race.

I am a little worried though about the temp on Saturday morning.  I am a whimp and it will be cooooold to get on the bike with wet clothes when it's less than 50 degrees. Brrrrr

Don't worry about that...one trip up that wall will warm you up ;-) Seriously though, the first few miles are relatively slow (mainly gradual up) so you will dry off at lower speeds. Once you make the turn you have a long downhill that will be chilly, but that is several miles into the ride. Good luck. I am jealous you all get to play this weekend!

Sounds like you should ride in your wetsuit! :-)

Anyone ever stay at the Budget Inn Madison? I have a reservation there, but Ive seen some less than kind reviews and wondering if I should drive a bit farther for a better place.

Beautiful weather today for the race, hope all had a good race.  The only thing I will say is the run deserves much more talk than the bike.  That lollipop run reminded me of the rollers in Western MD.  Belews Lake is an awesome lake to swim in.

I really enjoyed the race too!  The lake was so much nicer than swimming in Lake Norman.  The headwind on the bike was very strong at times. The run was much tougher than I thought it was going to be. There were some serious hills in that run!  My goal was to finish in 3hrs, I did it in 3:00:15, so I am happy. Next up: White Lake Half

Did anyone see me out there I wasn't hard to miss...I plowed over a water volunteer at mile 3 and fell into a ditch....Hammy locked up and I had to take the cart of shame back to the finish line.

I think I saw you walking back in the grass with the bike as I was heading out to take the first right onto the main road. Was that you?  sorry about your mishap Frown

I had a really rough day. I'd been sick all week, feeling weak with low energy, woke up feeling about the same maybe even a bit worse but I felt like I could get through. For some reason this past week every time I got my heart rate up, I couldnt maintain effort or keep my breath, and aside from the wind I didnt think this bike was that particularly hard. Anyways, I still blew up climbing, and had to do everything I could to take advantage of the downhills (the one good part of being a big guy) to even be close to what id expected (15 MPH). I wound up walking the whole run, and thankfully they kept the finishing chute open for me. I had planned on doing it all even if they hadnt but it was nice of them to do it. DFL but with how I felt just happy to have finished.
