Aloha TriPatrick,

I'd like to join and make some friends here!

NAME: Angel

AGE: 42

STORY:  Only started participating in sports at age 35 when I began kitesurfing.  This is an extreme sport, but not really as physical as you may think (more mental).  I took up cycling, then swimming, but never ran in my life.  Started running Aug 2011, and did first Sprint Tri Sept 2011.  I have found my passion!

FAMILY: Divorced, no children.  Lucky to have a tri boyfriend who inspired me to tri.

CURRENT TRAINING:  I work full-time for a law firm so my training is after work or weekends. I am trying periodization training, doing key workouts and resting in between so I can absorb the training.  During the week I do some cardio at the gym followed by high rep light weight lifting to get toned.  Since I've been cycling for years, I devote more of my training on my weaknesses, which is running.  I run about 15 miles/week now. The longest I've ever run is 8 miles.  I've become an adept swimmer and have cut back on that training volume as well.  I don't really enjoy pool swimming and open ocean swimming is hard to do with my work schedule, even though I'm in Hawaii.  Cool

WEIGHT LOSS: I have not lost any weight for 7 months although I've gotten more tone and lost inches.  I would like to lose 10 more pounds but when I try to diet I lose performance, get headaches.  Technically I'm an Athena but I don't feel like one... I come in at the middle or bottom 1/3 of my age group.

GOALS: Lose the 10 pounds, get a flat stomach, get faster at running (my race pace is 11 min!).  Half Marathon this year, Half Ironman by 2013, IM also on the long term goal bucket list.  Stay fit forever!

Looking foward to getting to know all of you too.

I sure wish I could have a good enough race next month to meet you in kona!If your weakness is running maybe look into a different running plan. I have a link on my other computer about a running plan I have followed with good results. It is a plan devoted to running more days, but starting out with fewer miles a day. I guess if I liked swimming anywhere I would be much better, but dang it is hard for me to stay consistent. I feel the same as you about weight. I am a Clyde, but last year I was 19th in my age group in my first ironman out of 500 or so. I think people can place well with consistent training and dedication. I look forward to helping where I can...

Hello I am new to the forum and was wondering if you had any more room in your mentor group. To introduce myself, I am a 28 YOF and I live in Beachburg ON (Canada). I am very new to triathlon, I grew up playing competitive soccer and hockey but unfortunately suffered a knee injury which prevents me from doing any type of running. I am hoping to complete a few swim/cycle races this summer - my first one is a sprint swimcycle in May (500m swim & 20km cycle). Up until a few months ago I had not swam or even owned a bicycle for about 15 years... so this is a all totally new to me and hugely outside of my comfort zone! I purchased a mountain bike last year and am loving it, but swimming is a great challenge for me and I have alot of work to do. I have hired the help of a competitive swimmer who helps me every week with my swimming skills which has been of huge assistance!!!

So funny- GI JEN, I saw your post and thought "Someone else from Ontario! I wonder where Beachburg is?" I see you're north of Ottawa, I'm in Sarnia (between Windsor and Toronto, near London).  I'm probably closer distance-wise to some of the Americans :P

[P]Patrick, that's so awesome you get to do an IM in your backyard, sub 10 hours this year![P]I have a good 5 mi loop by my house to run, I do this after work twice a week. It has small rolling hills. Got a heart rate monitor yesterday, I think this will help me a lot, biofeedback baby! Haven't swam since my last race April 1st. Hope to do a mile swim tomorrow +5k run brick. Aloha

Hello TriPatrick,

Have room for one more?   I'm a 53 yr old male living in the DFW area (Dallas-Forth Worth for ya'll non-Texans).  I've done a number of marathons and half marathons but am looking forward to getting into triathlons.   I just finished my first Sprint last weekend and it was awesome!   Swimming is definitely a challenge for me but I enjoy it.

Sorry about the sweat -- just back from a run.

Welcome Ted!  always room for one more.  Ride the wave of the first one and better yourself for the next.  Stay consistent on the swimming and it becomes second nature (maybe not as fast as you want, but easier)

Hey everyone!  I went ahead and closed the door, but I did not lock it just incase.  I know most of you can not post often, but I encourage you to drop in ask questions or just say hi.

Does everyone have goals they want to accomplish this season?  If so post them up so we can all help you out.

Do not be afraid to ask any question.  When I started I did not know how to change a flat, clip in to pedals, nothing about chaffing, gears, transitions, etc.

If you are new to cycling you will fall off your bike some way or another.  Just wait!

I love food so I always welcome food talk as well.  Food is good.

I went on my first group ride today-  and fell twice. Both 0 mph crashes. The first one was just nerves- it was the very first stop light, and I thought it would turn green soon enough... nope, and over I went. The second one... I think I was still unstable from the 1st one, and I don't even know what happened. But, the group was really supportive. I wish I could get out with them more often, but my schedule hasn't worked out. As for the ride itself, it was the longest ride I've ever been on, and the most enjoyable

First item on the agenda is Oklahoma Freewheel   http://www.okfreewheel.com/  not a race, but it will still be tough...  after that I will most likely do a couple of sprints and a oly - along with Hotter Than Hell 100....  I may go for a HIM, but that's still a reach goal...

Name: Andy - I'm a IT nerd / restaurant person.

FAMILY: Married for almost 20 years.  My wife has learned to up with my slight OCD tendencies...  I have one daughter who is 11 going on 15 (if she asks about getting a phone, make sure you tell her dad says "NO")

CURRENT TRAINING: Just riding my bike right now.  I was up to half marathon distance running at the first of the year, but I ended up missing my first half marathon due to hip problems - I could run alright, but just couldn't move afterwards...

2012 RACES: No tri's dialed in yet, there is an event just about every weekend here, so no rush to nail something down. Menu probably includes a couple of sprints, and an Oly - US Open in Rockwall is a good, challenging course...  First I have a 7 day bike tour to complete - avg about 60-70 miles a day or so...

WEIGHT LOSS: Some would be good, more would be better.  I am at the top of my range right now, time to work it down about 20 lbs or so...

LOL - we all do that...  mine was while sitting still in the driveway...  I probably clip out too soon, but I don't like falling   I  generally ride training rides in mountain bike shoes, as they are easier to ride on top of the pedals with...

So I have some more scycling  questions. I did my first big training ride yesterday- I did 30kms (should I be converting everything I post on here to miles?) and it took me 1h55 min which was somewhat disappointing (my tri is in 3 months and last years results show the slowest people doing 40km in 1h45min). I was using a crappy old mountain  bike my sister gave me with broken gears and I have a feeling I wasn't in a high enough gear but couldn't get it working well.

I decided instead of dumping money into that bike I should try to find something cheap but better to work on. Through my local classifieds I found a Miele (Canadian brand from my research) road bike I purchased for $120. Here's what I know about it- Tange Infinity CrMO tubing, some kind of shimano clip on pedals, Exage Motion Groups, centennial contact tires, the paint job (Sikkens acrylic uerthane) leads me to believe it may be from the 80's?

Problems-

1) I don't know what kind of shoe that clip needs (2 hole, 3 hole?). I have never biked in clip-shoes? Do I want to learn how and buy a pair? Can I find a cheap used pair? Or should I just replace it with normal pedals? How much would that cost?

2) There is a flat tire, so I couldn't even take it for a ride. I know the guy I bought it from so I am trusting him that it works well like he claims. The tires have such small posts (is that the right term for the things to fill them?) that our air pump doesn't fit (the one we use on our mountain bikes). Do I need some kind of special pump?

3) Should this make a significant difference in my speed (not only that but my mountain bike was a painful ride)? Was this a decent deal?

Sorry- I'm very new to cycling. I have had some cheap mountain bikes growing up but have never ridden a road bike.

I think that sounds pretty good given the circumstances!

I've seen a lot of clip-shoes on Craigslist, looks like people used them once or twice and gave up on them. You probably want to learn how. You do need to find the shoe that matches the pedal, a bike shop could help you out with that. Normal pedals are very inexpensive.

2) There is a flat tire, so I couldn't even take it for a ride. I know

There's 2 types of valves, presta (which are common on road bikes) and shrader (probably what your mountain bike has). My pump has an interchangable thing in the spring, maybe you could find the owners' manual to see if yours has that?

3) Should this make a significant difference in my speed (not only that but my mountain bike was a painful ride)? Was this a decent deal?

If it increases your confidence, I'd say so! I also had cheap mountain bikes growing up, and being on a 'grown up' road bike felt like such a step-up in the world Smile

Sounds like a great entry level bike at that price.  There are several different types of clip systems - my guess at that price is that they are SPD style - but I could be wrong...  http://www.bicyclewarehouse.com/buyers-guides/all-about-clipless-pe... should help you run it down.  Definitely, definitely stay with the pedals and get the right cleats - the difference in pedalling is night and day....  You can get new shoes for less than US$100, I imagine you can find used for less... and some sites like sierratrading post have some that are relatively cheap

Yes, you will need a different pump or attachment for a road bike.  Personally, I would take it to a shop, get the flat fixed and have them give the bike a quick check over to make sure everything is in good shape - especially if the bike has been idle a while...

Good deal - I bet in a month or two you will be twice as fast....

Hello Darlyngirl!

You shoud be able to buy a small brass adaptor at your LBS that will screw on your presta valve so you can pump up the tires with your bike pump.  My old LBS had them on the counter in a fishbowl and they sold for $1 or so.

Race went well today. Still waiting on the results to be posted but I looked at them a little before I left. I beat my time/pace goals in each portion of the event so I'm happy. My goals going in were <7 min swim (300 yd pool swim), 17+ mph bike, and <10 min/mi run pace. My results were 6:17 swim, 19.7mph bike avg I think, and 9:47 min/mi run pace.

The run was tough. My training has been messed up the last few weeks because I have had to go to ND for work the past few weeks and there aren't a lot of training opportunities when I'm up there for work. There were two hills on the run as well which made it tough with the extra weight I carry.

It was a great experience. The event was put on by Playtri and they did a great job. Hats off. I can't wait to do another one!

Next up for me is the Captex in Austin on Memorial Day.

My plan is to pick up the 20 week Olympic 2x/wk plan on month two on Tuesday. Tomorrow off. The race would be at the end of the 4th reduced volume week so I think it will be fine.

Now, if I could just figure out how to keep my caloric intake down enough to drop some weight I could definitely improve my times. My goal is 10 lbs by Memorial day. That's 2.5 lbs/wk which should be doable I think.

Now, if I could just figure out how to keep my caloric intake down enough to drop some weight I could definitely improve my times. My goal is 10 lbs by Memorial day. That's 2.5 lbs/wk which should be doable I think.

Congratuations, Eric, on your first triathlon!   Excellent!   Give yourself a pat on the back.  Make it two!

Sounds great loonatic Glad you met your goals.

For weight loss, I highly recommend WeightWatchers- there's a thread on the tri-ing to lose weight board. I have lost 35lb since Jan 1 on WW- so I am a big fan. Plus you earn 'points' (food) for your exercise so it is adaptable to training too.

Good luck on your next race
