I don't remember the start being that shallow for that long - it stays shallow for about 150 to 200 yards!! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thats awesome! Its definitely my favorite swim of any race. Too funny about being so shallow. It is pretty crazy. I always get a kick of seeing people standing knee high during the warm ups 100 yards from the shore. If it was 70 degrees, sounds like it will be wetsuilt legal. This my 10 or 11th half and I have never raced one nonwetsuit. Looks like the streak will continue..... |

![]() ![]() | ![]() According to local web sites re: the lake. Current depth is 503.7, Full depth is 504.32 . Temp at Black Cat Island is 75.1 at 2 ft, 74.8 at 10 ft. This island is over near Ctr Harbor and Moultonboro.
Yes, it is shallow. Swam there this morning. Your dragging sand with your hands for a good bit out and in to the finish of the swim. Crossing over the bar halfway is also very shallow. You could almost walk the entire course! |

Then off to the maine coast and then back to Gilford. I am a little nervous as I have been training in Flatlands, I did get a good hill workout last week. Anyway went for a hilly run near Cooperstown, went slow but felt good, Looking forward to meeting everyone. |

![]() | ![]() Hi, I'm new here mghawaly, I will be camping at Gunstock. It's a nice campground, and super convenient for those doing the race. Just take the shuttle to the race start Sunday morning.
I've ridden large sections of the course the past few weeks, and maybe I'm just not a strong cyclist, but I find it pretty tough for the first 12 miles or so (until you get on to 106). Nothing too terribly long for hills, but there are enough of them with decent grades that I found it hard to settle in to a nice aero groove until I hit rt. 106. This will be my first HIM and I'm hoping to do the bike split in under 3hrs (so I need to maintain 18.5 or better pace), but the hills are just enough to have me questioning if I can do that. Fortunately, the middle 30 miles or so of the course should be fast, so I'm hoping to make up as much as I can there. Just have to cross my fingers and hope the wind conditions are favorable.

Welcome to New England! I hope you are enjoying the Maine coast! Quite beautiful and I hope you are eating some lobster! I'll be there with a bunch of friends next Sunday (gulp!) 4 friends doing the full half IM and 6 of us on relay teams. I'm in for the swim. Sure hope the lake cools off! I like it to be nice and cold. |

We will have an outback travel trailer and Illinois firefighters plates I rode the course on Friday and lets just say, "it was one of the those days". Actually sounds very similiar to yours. I went through two tubes and spoke with another rider who flatted as well. So that makes me a bit nervous the race is going to be a flat fest. I don't rememeber seeing any glass or a ton of debiris, so not sure what caused it. I know the course has always been rough, but it seems worse this year. It was raining on the way back and with the potholes/cracks the decents were a bit sketchy. I had hope to upload my garmin link, but I had issues with that as well.... So no dice. Overall it was a very fustrating day, but glad it happened this weekend rather than next. |

That jog will be part of the race. It's on the directions but the map drawing isn't very detailed. It not only adds some distance but is also a short but pretty steep hill after the left onto Farraville. Depending on the day, the wind can be pretty strong and in your face after the turn around, so that can also add to the difficulty. Just be smart and let the time fall where it may. |

![]() | ![]() Well, we're getting close enough where we can start taking the weather forecast a little bit more seriously. So far, it's looking great! Some chance of rain, but more importantly, looks like temps are going to be in the low to mid 70's with lower humidity than we've had lately. That sounds like perfect racing conditions to me! I was dreading the thought of a hot and humid day - that weather just slays me. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I totally hear you regarding run recovery. This year I went with a completely new approach with my run training. I now run 5 days a week, but never run all that long. My recovery has been awesome and I've had by far my best results. I think my longest run this year (non race) has been 8 miles? In the past I would run 3 days a week and do the typical long run on Sunday. The long Sunday run would shatter me and I would slog through some of the following workouts. Basically always training tired. Now I feel pretty good going into the majority of my workouts. Very cliche, but the whole quantity vs quality has worked well for me. It can be a bit tough logistically, but overall it has been worth it. Obviously it doesn't work for everyone, but worth checking out. |

![]() | ![]() Since we're sharing training volume, here is mine since the beginning of April when I officially started my training program. This does not count all the base work I did over the winter in the months leading up to this. Swim - 59 miles, 40 hours Bike - 1792 miles, 102 hours Run - 570 miles, 86.5 hours It's nothing to brag about. This will be my first HIM and I think I've put in enough training, though looking back I wish I spent a bit more time on the bike. We'll see for sure come Sunday, but I sure do feel ready. I put in a bit more time running than require because I'm also training for my first marathon at the end of September. I've been running mostly 3, sometimes 4, days a week, with the traditional long run on the weekends. My longest so far is 18 miles. I was actually kind of surprised that I felt pretty good after that. I have been very sure to keep my LSD runs slow. I've been using my HR rather than my pace to keep them easy. I haven't really felt too fatigued from this much running, so part of me wonders if I've done too much of it as an easy effort. As this is a year of serious endurance first, no matter the outcome, I'm counting it as a learning year! Cheers! |
