A cooler race is going to be a whole new experience for me. How quickly will it "warm " up? |

At least the water will feel warm!! On the plus side, it will not be a HOT run. |

Member 319 Seattle, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread Wow, 35 degrees?! I swore never to do another cold race after the water temps at CdA. Apparently I didn't think this one through... In the meantime, I'm working on CIM this December (only 26 miles, can't handle the 50 mile races you're doing!) and probably Chelanman 70.3 next July. I'll likely add one more 70.3 in June as well (Victoria?). |

Regular 81 Tahoe City, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread This will be iron distance #2 for me. Not worried about altitude since I live in Tahoe City. The water temp wont be much of a problem (if the winds cooperate). This time of year it's the warmest the lake gets. (Today it's 64 degrees.) It's getting on the bike soaking wet that is going to be cold. The first 15 miles will be OK, but once you get past Tahoe City you ride along the river and it tends to be about 10 degrees colder. I ride to work everyday from Tahoe City to Squaw Valley. I wear 2 long sleeve shirts, long pants and gloves. It's chilly. On the plus side it warms up pretty quickly past Squaw and we have newly paved roads for just about the entire ride! |

Member 591 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread Short answer (based on IMSG in 2010 with similar temperature pattern): arm warmers and socks for the bike should cover things. You'll be cold to start, but it'll pass. Put a towel in the transition bag and take an extra minute to get real dry. A rough towel will help get some blood back to the surface to warm you a bit. Long answer: IMSG water was colder, so hands/feet were pretty frozen out of the water. Arm warmers and toe covers on the bike and still shivered quite strongly for first half hour, despite the uphill climb out of the lake. By lap 2 on the bike, I had to stop to take off the toe covers, as the feet were burning up as the temperature got up to 70 or so. If I understand the course at Tahoe correctly, the water "should" be warmer, so hand/feet not so cold to start. But the bike start is faster than IMSG was, so I'm expecting to just be pretty uncomfortable for the first 45 minutes or so. By 9:00 or so, it shoudl be upper 50's and low 60's which will feel very comfortable. |

Expert 1258 Marin County, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread I also did IMSG in '10. I threw on a long sleeve fleece lined bike jersey, socks, a thin merino wool cap and thin knit gloves. Had I known it would take 45 miles for my feet to thaw I would have slipped on a thin pair of booties. I took the gloves off for the second lap but put them back on after Veyo. This set up worked well for me. FWIW I weigh 115 and about 12% bf, so on the really small side. If the weather looks to be similar for Tahoe I'll wear the same get up and go down to my tri suit for the run. I had put the thin skull cap and knit gloves on just in case and was really grateful for it. I think that for Tahoe having 'just in case' items in T1 will be important. Zanne |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread Finished with and mostly recovered from IMAZ, 2012, and now looking forward to next season and IM # 3. Like everyone else, I am a little nervous about the elevation but also really, really excited for this race. I live at 900 feet above sea level in essentially flat Southeastern Michigan so it will be interesting getting the training right for this race. Can't wait. PS. I have considered the altitude tent option but IM racing already strains the marriage a bit. Soooo, asking my wife to sleep in an altitude tent or moving in to the guest bedroom and sleeping alone at altitude may not be the best options....... |

Congrats on IMAZ! x2 on not going for the altitude gizmos. My husband looked at me funny when I started talking about options, and I could tell it was a lost cause. I've decided to go in to this race without any time or placing expectations. I think there's going to be an interesting correlation of finish time with elevation of hometown. |

Regular 71 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread Temps can be cool in the morning. We used to have a cabin at lake level at Tahoe, and even in July-August- September, it was not unusual for us to turn the fireplace on at night. It can warm up quick during the day, though. 40 degree temp span there not unusual. Water is basically melted snow- how warm it is depends on how warm the summer was. Water can be choppy, with windswell. People occasionally get a chance to surf Tahoe, but not often. I have been out there on a SUP and sometimes it feels like the ocean, but cold. The bike climb over Brockway is tough. The run looks flat, but that course has some rollers so not the easiest run either. I will be volunteering at the first one, hope to do LTIM in 2014. |

Yeah I saw a chart awhile back correlating power numbers on the bike to altitude difference (race vs. what you trained at). If you train at sea level you'll want to back off more than usual... like 8-10%. |

Same here. Ran 30k and 18k trail races in November and December, am making an attempt at a BQ on February 3rd, then racing the Way Too Cool 50k in March. I've never felt stronger/faster, even though I havent touched my bike in months. I'll start back up with swimming and riding in mid march after a vacation to Hawaii and another to Boston to watch my wife race. |

Member 36 Danville | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread I'm planning to follow Don Fink's "Competitive" plan for IM Tahoe, and the plan starts the 30 weeks of training on February 25 (actually on the 26th because Monday is a rest day). I'm interested to see if there are others who will follow this plan (or one of the other two Don Fink 30 week plans). Would be good to keep in touch with others to help keep up the committment in sticking to the training. |

Extreme Veteran 565 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread I saw that WTC posted a participant list with name/age/gender/state details. I did a quick excel dump and wanted to share some stats with you all: 2,874 Participants - doesn't that seem high? Maybe they over-sell knowing that some people won't show up. I thought they were planning on 2,500. 72% Male, 28% Female

Member 319 Seattle, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Tahoe : Official Thread Thanks for posting those! Two things I noticed: holy cow is California representing at this race! Over half the participants are locals (the next two are Texas and Washington, each with less than 10x the numbers). And there are likely only 2 Kona slots in my age group. Likely wasn't going to be an issue for me anyway, but just sayin'. My chances just took a nose dive |
