The one free day I get to belly up the bar and instead of Kona coverage I get the mayor tellin me to "be aware". GFY. Rant not done. jdutton13 - 2012-10-27 4:30 PM Not on my NBC local channel or on NBC sports here in Detroit. Well according to local TV the world will end starting tomorrow night when hurricane Sandy hits. |

![]() | ![]() BrianRunsPhilly - 2012-10-27 1:19 PMI'm infuriated. Grabbed a beer and sat down in front of the TV to watch, and instead the local NBC affiliate is broadcasting is showing a "storm watch news special." No worries mate. 35 minutes in and the race hadn't even started. So much for the 90 -> 120 format change for "extra" coverage. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Apparently here in Detroit, NBC feels that it is more important to show infomercials rather than broadcast Kona. It looks like I have to wait until 11:00 Tuesday night for a replay on NBC sports. Unfortunately I won't even be able to see the replay on Tuesday since I'll be in the car on my way to IMFL. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have it in full glory here, no storm coverage. Now I jinxed it I'm sure. With Hines Ward getting screen time, maybe PHlly stations didn't prioritize, but in what only Philadelphians call "upstate PA" I have it on. Gotchocolatemilk.com is crashed, btw. I will probably submit a video to see what happens. |

We have Washington and NYC, and even those of us in the flyover part still have enough ego to think we are the center of the universe. |

![]() | ![]() Hi i'm from germany found this thread, because i would love to see the broadcast, but had no receiving for nbc. Had someone made a recording and could upload it for me? If there is no recording till yet, there is an opportunity on the next day on universal sports http://universalsports.com/schedule/ it would be great if someone can help me! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() things I noticed: Leanda Cave "Let Chrissy sit in the best spot, afterall she is racing... not" Holy bitter? Pros weren't wearing their goggles under their swim cap. Pros don't use volunteers in transition. That was some crazy wind. 600 watts? really?? thats got to be an instantaneous power output not a sustained effort top three women on the bike got penalties for drafting. really? does anyone know if any of these were intentional drafting. Caroline Steffen and Leanda Cave are both really tall chicks. Caroline Steffen qualifies as an athena until December 31. No actual talk about Lew Hollander but they showed him finish. Is this really his last year?

I didn't think this year's broadcast flowed very well. The race week stuff with the pros was somewhat interesting, but after 15-20 minutes of it, I was more than ready to get the race started. That could have been a separate show in itself. Then when they finally showed the swim start, they went pretty much right to a commercial break. I got the feeling this year more than ever that it was a show about triathlon with a race thrown in. In other words, the race itself didn't really seem to be the story. I know it never really is, but more so this year. Then they had to make sure to showcase the sponsor "mylist"... I was excited to watch it at the start, but after a while it got tedious. Kind of disappointing. BTW, I feel for you guys who had the coverage pre-empted for storm coverage. I'm really hoping that doesn't happen to the NFL games tomorrow. Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I remember watching it last year (my first time) and just crying the whole time as they showed more in depth on the age groupers stories, etc. This year each AGer only got a minute or so at the most, then it was it. I definately thought last years was better. Dangit! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry the folks back east got preempted for storm coverage and infomercials. That just sucks. The pre-race stuff was interesting, because we don't usually get to see that kind of stuff, but it was way too long. And of course, most of the people they focused on didn't do well in the race. I actually like the more play-by-play version of the pro coverage. In previous years, they just didn't have the facts right of when they actually happened in the race. The down side to that is they didn't leave enough time for the age group coverage and that's a shame. |

I definately thought last years was better. Dangit! In my opinion, the age-grouper stories have always been the best part of this show. If I want to see detailed coverage of the pro race, I'll watch the live stream. But the stories of the extraordinary "average age-groupers" is what makes it special and inspiring, and what makes the Kona race memorable. I thought they gave short shrift to the age-groupers and personal interest stories last year, but this year was ridiculous. In this format, Blazeman would have gotten a 30 second "I'm racing to beat ALS" cameo. If this is where NBC is going with the broadcast, I'm done watching it. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I gotta agree with what most have said. I didn't enjoy the format this year. Too much pre-race and not enough AGers. I'm wondering how much of it had to do with the 2 week turnaround on producing it. I'd rather wait until December for a better product if they can't come up with a good narrative in a short turnaround.

I agree. It seemed to be missing a lot. I finished watching with the impression that they cut a lot out for time. A lot of it seemed abbreviated. I know, we're slimming a day long race into 2 hrs, but I mean more like they were blazing through a checklist. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My thoughts - 1. Age Groupers got shorted and it lost some of my interest. (-) 2. They failed to capture the drama of the professional race. (-) 3. Cinematography of the bike ride was good, swimming poor (0) 4. Pre-race - professional family stories were interesting - just too long (0) 5. Liked the Julie Moss piece (+) Still better than watching baseball!!! |

![]() | ![]() I am with the folks who did not enjoy it as much this year as previous ones. I saw the pro's live (through streaming of course) so maybe that played into it but they didn't do a good job with the flow and as others mentioned they didn't do much around AGers at all |
