Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Anyone been shot? I went to medical school in Detroit. Lived downtown all four years and never once felt really threatened or in danger of being shot. Several of my classmates decided that they should buy guns for self protection/fun. They got very in to it and went to the shooting range most weekends. Well, one weekend at the range, one of these guys got shot on accident....by the guy next to him at the shooting range. He will walk with a limp for the rest of his life. I found it pretty ironic that the only person from our large school in Detroit to be a victim of gun violence was a guy at a shooting range in the Northern suburbs. (Not an anti or pro gun story. Just a story) |

In '96 I got knifed once in the lower back, one in the left side (below the ribs) and one just below the left chest, glanced off a rib and popped the upper lobe of the left lung while breaking up a bar fight. Dude used a freaking steak knife. Felt like a hard punch with a burning sensation in the center of it... other than that, it just felt like REALLY tight muscle stitches/cramps/knots. Oddly, without even having seen the knife, I knew exactly what had happened the instant the first one went in. It was kinda weird. Everyone around me was freaking out a LOT more than I was, but I also hadn't really looked at myself. +1 for never look down. The first couple years, I HATED being in crowds or really busy places. Today, I typically completely forget about it until I see or feel one of the scars. UGH! More on this - why did he stab you 3 times, did he get convicted of attempted murder? Up here guns are rare so knives tend to be the weapon of choice. I've only had once instance where a friend I was with was "stabbed" but it was a dull jack-knife and didn't go through his denim jacket.

Hard to explain in text, but he was face-to-face scuffling with another guy, I came up behind the other guy to try to pry them apart (I was working at the bar at the time). The dude with the knife was kinda side swinging it, so when I got in close enough to pull them apart, the first hit went into my back. As I pulled them apart, I turned and the second one got me in the side. I caught his wrist as the third one came in and stopped it short of going into my chest. The guy I was pulling off of him had been stabbed 3 times in the azz. His brother-in-law was also stabbed by a 2nd guy that was in there with the 1st. He died on the scene (effectively) as one blow went through his sternum and into his heart.
One of the two was caught, he got 25 to Life for Felonious Assault (butt stabbing), Attempted Murder (me), and Murder. |

I can't say what it feels like to be hit with a bullet, but I can speak to the sheer horror of having someone be 10 feet away firing a gun at your head. |

Receiving end of a gun (several occasions), shots being fired (several occasions), lots of live ammo going overhead (just once, thankfully). Only ever had a BB and a pellet sink into flesh, and not very far, thankfully. Childhood shenanigans. |

| Austin, Texas or Jupiter, Florida | Subject: RE: Anyone been shot? I've been shot at by an AK47 that hit the helicopter that was taking me from my base to the plane taking me out of Iraq. That ticked me off. Sparks flew in and all. Then there were mortars that overshot often. Then there was the IED which was a 155 round in a goat carcass that we were lucky to spot and stay away from. But the closest I've come to the hurt was a claymore shoot that we did on a range where we set them up on the other side of a berm and fired them off. The corporal fired before the Gunny and I were on the ground. Over pressure and pellets and flames but we were all ok. |
