I'd like to join your group Big Steve!

Name: Schwartzie (that's at least my real nickname anyways)

After dropping 30 pounds from September to the beginning of December I decided it was time to push myself again.  I did my first Sprint Tri on Dec 8th.  I finished 4 and 1/2 minutes faster than my goal of 90 minutes. I finished 13th of 36th in the Clydesdale division and 2 of 7 in my age group.

I'm 36 and working to drop down to 235 from 260, at 5-10 (I'm built like a fat inside linebacker.)p>

Thanks for the consideration.

Schwartzie

Keep up with the weight loss! you are doing great things for your body. I have struggled with weightloss most of my life and it is amazing how much better I feel when my weight is lower. Its tough but worth it. Nice work!

Sounds perfect Steve. Heading out and across the Golden Gate Bridge for a bike ride. We are very lucky to have this playground in our back yard!
Crossing that bridge on a bike would be really fun!

So here is my dilemma that I chew on. I work shift work. My shifts are 12 hours and from the time I get up to the time I get home it is easily a 15 hour day. SO on these days I dont train much. The pedometer says I average about 13 miles a day though during work so I am not exactly doing nothing. One week I work mon, tue, fri, sat, sun. The next I only work wed, thurs. Every 2months I switch from days to nights. Same shift length. My question is how to fit training into this schedule. I have awife and four kids that I cant put aside as I would like the training to be more of a life style than a season if that makes sense. I enjoy everything from sprint tri's to 1/2 marathons and 1/2 irons. I used to race quite a bit but with this new schedule it has kinda been a struggle to figure out. Any input would be appreciated.

Its fun having you all on here. Its motivating to see all of you and where you are at with training. I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Happy training!

Thats makes total sense.  Geting in to a routine is definitely tough with that type of schedule so making it a life style IS your best bet. I look at my weekly plan on Sunday night and make a commitment to myself that somehow someway most of it will be accomplished by the following Sunday afternoon.  My hours are much more standard but things happen weekly that throw wrenches into the plan.  Early morning meetings, mid week dinners, kids appointments etc.... I've just disciplined myself that I'm going to get the training in somehow someway.  If I can only apply that same discipline to meals I'd be golden Laughing

I got a 27 mile ride in today. Rode into a headwind for the first half and hammered hard for the second half.  Hitting the rode tomorrow am for a run.

Got derailed a little bit this weekend due to some sick kids, spent Saturday at the doctors with 2 kids under the weather.

NAME: agrin2005  / Al

STORY: I started running a few years after I completed my kemo for my lymphoma in 2002 .. I ran my 1 st 1/2 marathon in Baltimore in 2007. I have run a few 1/2 and did my 1st full 2011. I also have done a few Ragnar relays and they are a blast. I have a done a sprint and Internationale distance Tri back in 2008. An Iron man distance is on my list as well as 50k, 50 mile , 100k and if I can do it a 100mile race. I want to see how far I can go and raise money for charity along the way.

FAMILY STATUS: I live in Towson Maryland , have been married for 10 years and have 4 kids , 2 from my 1st marriage and 2 step kids .  We are a empty nest with 2 dogs. My wife works from home so she supports me in my craziness.

CURRENT TRAINING: I've fallen off the wagon since 2012 I ended up hurting my leg in my martial arts. So as far as I am at ground zero. So this should be fun. I am using the Iron fit plan to finish.

The main races for 2013 are going to be:

  • Noth Face Endurance 50k
  • GoRuck team event
  • Chesapeake Man Ironman distance

How did I quit smoking? Did you mean me?

If so...I ran out of cigarettes on Christmas Day and said, screw this, I'm not going out in the cold and snow to buy more. I slapped on a patch and haven't had one since. I've been talking about quitting forever. The only times I've quit for very long was when I was pregnant. Hopefully I can stick it out this time. Aside from all the extra time I have on my hands, it's been pretty easy. I'm kind of shocked, actually.

Jeanie yes I should have stated that I was asking you, sorry.  I am looking to quit .. the issue is that I still like the action .. but I know I need to stop for sure. I am thinking the patch will be the way to go. I had stopped for a few years but started back up .. kick myself in the for that one... I am hoping with the workin out that I will not gain the weight that I did before when I quit.. anyway way to go...

Gah....my totals aren't quite what I wanted to see for the first week. But SOMETHING is better than nothing. This week I'm going to really focus on making new habits. Swim at lunch, run and/or bike at night. I'm excited to begin to see the weight start dropping off and the endurance building back up! I'm not changing my diet, yet...not much anyhow. But next week the diet plan starts. One week at a time. I've done this before, I know I can do it again!

You can do it! The patch really is awesome. So awesome it almost feels like cheating. For some twisted reason I feel like I should have to suffer to quit? Go figure that one out! I'm not saying I don't want a smoke every now and then, but it's fleeting. Maybe every few hours I think about it and it goes away in just a few seconds. Nothing like the agony of cold-turkey.

My aunt calculated this for me and she said that if I smoked a pack a day (I actually smoked a bit less than that, but it makes the math easier) I was spending THREE hours a day smoking. THREE!! Imagine what kind of training I could be doing with that much time!

Al and Steve welcome to the group!  Good to have a ultra marathoner and firefighter here!

Pretty bummed at myself this morning.  Set the alarm for 5 so I can get my swim in before the day begins.  Alarm rang, and I reset it for 6:30.  I find that unless I get the gym bag backed the night before or bike shorts, towel and sports drinks prepared the night before then the routine of doing that in the morning turns me off to the entire planned workout.  Note to self this year....prepare the night before!!

I am the same way, if I dont have everything packed up the night before I wont do it. That includes lunch as well.  I started the week off with a run this morning.

Do you think its a requirment to complete a Oly distance Tri before going for the 1/2IM?

Well Martin doesn't think so Smile.

I think previous race experience as shorter distances is really important and thats the route I took....sprint, Oly, Half Marry, HIM, Marathon, IM.   You can bypass that but only if you're comfortable with the distance.  If you can pull off some training bricks with a 10 mile run off a 56 mile bike you should be OK.

Happy Monday! Today I'm going to swim at lunch, and run at home after work. Oh and there's housework to do too. I played hooky yesterday and took my kids to do fun stuff in Lubbock. Back to the grindstone!

Happy Monday!

My numbers from last week are not brilliant:

S:0

B:25

R:14ish

As of now, I don't have a great option for swimming which is pretty crappy, especially since I am a very poor swimmer and my primary concern is not making the swimming cut-off during the IM. I am planning on getting some swimming lessons to build a bit more confidence and learn how to train for the swim.

As for building up to an event...it is the smart thing to do. I am not the most patient person and so I dove head-first into both marathoning first and then triathlon with a HIM. I am very lucky that I finished and I cannot tell you how much I learn about the sport during those 6 hours, haha. I had and still have very little clue of what I am doing.

I would definitely recommend taking the smart approach, if you can!

@holt1997 - You can consider what I work is shift work but it's pretty regular unless I'm working extra shifts over my weekends, which happens a lot over the holidays and about 1 time a month otherwise.  My shift starts at 0530 and ends at 1530.  By the time I get home, any motivation to workout is gone so I have to know myself and my own discipline.

I get up at 0300 to go in and work out.  I get my 25 minute strength workout (Ya, I'm still a gym rat - but it's intense and non-stop for the full 25 minutes.) Then I hit a pretty solid amount of running or biking (usually running.)  During the winter its too cold to run outside (ya 40 is too cold for me, in the dark.)  I get the majority of biking and swimming over the weekends (swimming is my lowest event).

I knocked out my usually workout and run today and got in a good ride on the stationary bike this afternoon.  I'll hit it hard this weekend.  I set a goal with my academy class mate....600 miles running this year and 1000 miles on the bike (I know I'll hit around 1500)

Nailed the diet today too so I'm proud of myself.
