Reverend5150's name is Mike, since he didn't include that before so I'm going to out him!

I'm starting my official training plan tomorrow, so it'll be 6 days for me, 1-2hrs each day. I've been loosely following the first month for the past month anyway, so hopefully it won't be too difficult to stick with Save for my inability to do the 50min run right now... but I'll get there.

hey Josh,

I'm training for an Iron distance race in August and following the 20wk plan on here. That doesn't really kick in until April so at the moment I'm just doing the first few weeks over and over again to try and get into the routine and build a decent base.

I've signed up for a half iron distance in May as part of the prep for August.

Do you think I should follow a half IM plan until then or stick with what I'm doing?

Cheers

Graham

I did IMKY last summer the last week of August, but did a HIM the first of July. IM Training seemed to have me more than ready for the half. But not sure yours will line up exactly the same. Everyone is different, but I have seen people start their training way too early, and be totally burned out by the time their IM gets here. I guess I would look at the workouts on your schedule that fall around the time of the half. If they are about the distance of the half, just stick with it, but if it looks like you may fall short of being ready, then I'd say add to your training to be sure you are ready. I have seen over training too fast turn into injury too many times, so work your way up from now til race day gradually.

OMG! That is a serious commitment. I'd be happy if I start training 3x/wk. But if you've been doing it mostly anyways, it will be piece of cake. But please tell me you're doing something harder than a sprint otherwise I'm going to die training. Die I say

Haha! I'm training for the Syracuse Half Ironman, so yes, more than a sprint!! If I'm not training for something I usually workout 5-6 days a week anyway, so I'm certainly not going from 0-100 here Just have to master getting up early to swim (and I don't really like swimming).

Josh,

Thanks for taking on this awesome leadership challenge! I just added the list of friends to my dashboard...and the hyperlink. I am not too savvy with the forum stuff so please bear with me.

I was off to a pretty good start with running and crossfit type stuff for the last few weeks, but I've found myself in a slump the last week and didn't make it out to train at all.

Here is a list of to do's for me:

1. Find a race... (1 sprint and 1 HIM)

2. Buy Bike

3. Become a member at the local pool

4. Train

5. Repeat step 4

I will take some photos for the before shot as suggested... potentially embarrassing but shame is also a good motivator! Is there a particular place you suggest posting them?

I would like to buy a decent gps/trainer watch or rig. Is there something you can recommend that is middle of the road price-wise that will link to the training logs here?

Lots of newb questions will follow, I am sure.

Thanks,

Doug

Rode the bike early this morning in cold weather. Found out how difficult it could be. Tried to run right after but my feet were like frozen or something. I couldn't get going. Is this something I should fight through when running in the cold? Do most triathletes train in the cold or not?

Currently snowing here in VA- I'm guessing proper gear will go a long way to keeping warm and dry. I wouldn't go out for a bike ride right now- but a run will be ok. I may have a private Rocky Balboa moment

Living in New Orleans the weather is beautiful right now. Its only cold in the morning right now. Hopefully it won't be on March 9th. I took my wetsuit for a swim today for the first time. Discovered it is a little more difficult to take deep breaths. Is this normal when breaking in a new suit? I did knock off a few minutes off my time so it did help. Going to enjoy some crawfish with some friends now. Go Ravens!

As a long time surfer from San Diego I'd say the wetsuit tightness is normal- it's something you get used too. Part of the reason is in it's design...the other remains in variation between the dressing room "try-on" and the actual swimming posture and lung expansion. Just my thoughts!

Good start. I suggest picking your races as soon as possible. Then you actually have a specific goal to train towards. You can start training even before you get a bike by using a stat bike at your local gym, or taking a spinning class a couple of times per week. You can also run outside, and that is free.As for a GPS, I personally own a Garmin 910xt (cost is around $400). I also like the Garmin 310 (cost is much less) Similar to the 910 without the swimming options. My wife has a Timex GPS watch, it works well for bike and run, just not for swimming. But the Timex is half the price of the Garmin. I don't know for sure about the Timex, but I think most of the Garmin watches will sync up here.Embarrassment is a terrible motivator. Just keep you photos for later, no need to show them off now. Once you have some serious changes, you will like looking at the photos side by side. Check mine out on my profile page. I personally love the cold weather. I like to icefish and snowboard, so running outdoors in the winter is very enjoyable to me for anything above 10 degrees. I actually won't ride outdoors if it is very cold though purely for safety reasons. It only takes 1 wreck to ruin your entire season, or even your life. Snow, ice or even black ice can be very dangerous with the skinny road tires, so I leave my TT bike in the basement on the trainer until spring. Mountain bikes on the other hand, can be a blast in the snow.If you just don't like the cold, you can always work out on a stat bike, or trainer and a treadmill. However you get the work in will be fine, and much better than sitting on the couch.

Wish we could swim outdoors here right now, but the single digit temps in Northern Indiana have us with about 9" of ice on the lakes right now. As to the fit, I could be wrong, but your suit may be just a bit too small. Did you get fitted, or just take a chance on size? Also cheaper wetsuits can sometimes be a bit more constrictive than the more high end suits. I know, I have a cheap one. It kinda sucks, but it cuts about 10 seconds off my 100 yard swim time. That adds up to quite a bit in longer races. I am currently looking at the Desoto 2 piece suits. The research I have done, I think they look like a top notch unit, so that is what I plan to swim in this summer.

I have the Garmin 310x and love it - easy to use, can be mounted on the bike for long cycles, can set timer to remind you to eat, drink etc, HR monitor can be set to alert you if you go above desired levels and much more. Also very easily transfered data to garmin connect and is compatible with uploading your workouts onto your BT training log.

I second the cold feet thing - did 2.5hrs on the bike yesterday and even though it was wamer than usual (about 7degC) my feet were frozen at the end - didn't go for a run after it but from past experience a few mins into the run and they should start to thaw slightly!!

I bought an Xterra sleeveless wetsuit. Tried it again today and I let some water into the suit by tugging at the neck to see what would happen. Not sure if I should have done that or not but I felt like I could breath a little better. I just need to lose some more weight.

I had not even tought of that, now that you mention it, I always scoop a bunch of water in the neck to get the inside full of water.  Seems to let everything move like it is all greased up.  Super tight until it is wet on the inside as well.

Not personally a Kestrel fan, but it really depends on what bike fits you the best. I suggest going to your LBS ( local bike shop) and test riding as many different brands as possible before making a decision. Every brand fits a little different.

Thanks for the advice! I am fortunate to have a friend with some hight end bikes he'll let me try out. I'm now leaning towards a Cannondale SuperSix road bike or an older Kuota Kalibur TT bike. Both look very tempting and are about the same when it comes to price.

Sorry I haven't been on too much lately. I had some minor outpatient surgery and have been on the shelf for the past week. I did start my 20 week half ironman training plan this week though. I had to modify the first week a bit, but I swam 45 minutes yesterday and was able to run 5 miles in 53 minutes today!!

I'm dying to get a ride in cause I bought a new bike. Might wait a few more days, don't want to push it and do too much too soon.

Rev., the new bike you speak of is a myth until you post the bike porn.  Come on and post that sleezy picture.Tongue out

Edit:  To those new to BT, it is almost expected that you proudly post a picture of your new bike when you get one, and is considered as Bike Porn, hence the post above.

Here she is, giant OCR limited. Full carbon with ultegra components and race lite wheels. I wanted to upgrade my old bike that had entry level components. I ended up selling my old bike for the same price I paid for this!! Its on my kinetic trainer. Its pink cause its the breast cancer model.
