Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Big fan of the camping toilet. Add a privy tent and you've got your own port-a-potty. I go to a number of music festivals and even though they clean the porta's quite regularly, at 3am it can be kinda nasty. And, sometimes the porta's can be far away from your camp site. I will admit the TP dispenser may be a bit much, but it is waterproof and the last thing you want is to have your TP supply get soaked. I just keep mine in a waterproof bag. On a side note, I am kicking myself about the 'go girl' I did a marketing project in college 23 years a go and came up with a 'port-a-p*nis'. Basically the same thing. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by mmrocker13 Well, there's always bugs if you are outside in Minnesota in the summer (or, any time that isn't winter, I suppose...). As for the best time...depends on what you like. Spring (late May/Memorial Day) has some great fishing, as the ice is just out and the fish are all in makin' fishie babies or whatever it is they do in the shallows. But the water is COLD, and it is one of the more dangerous times to go b/c of that (and the flooding, etc.). July is peak season, but if you go far in, you're alone (which is what we do). It's great to be out fishing until 11, for sure. But it is buggy (since it's summer :p). There is like an hour at dusk where it can get irritating, but on the whole...you'd be fine. Personally, the Labor Day time of the year--early September--is my favorite time. You CAN get some colder days...but there's also the chance for some hot ones, but in general, it's pretty temperate and consistent (well, what PASSES for consistent in MN), and the water is still warm enough to get into every day for a splash down/how'syourfather/clean up. By the end of September/October, it's starting to get cold, but still pretty. October you're almost to winter. Some nuts DO go up during the winter, but I think it's way too dangerous, IMO. Beautiful, but dangerous. Like I said, Labor Day is my favorite time. If we only get up once during the year (although we try to go more often), it is ALWAYS over Labor Day. We paddle and portage, as we fish. People do hike, and there are trails (the Kek trail, for example), where you can get in pretty deep and access the sites. Personally, I like the boat, as you can cover a lot more ground, and there is the fishing thing. Plus, you can then take day trips to other spots (including to places to hike, were you so inclined). Wow. That's great info! Thank you so much. We love, love, love to fish and float. Normal level bugs, no prob. That sounds like what you're talking about. I can do that. One hiking trip I was on in Maine we had mosquitos an inch thick all over every part of our DEET covered bodies. It became really difficult. We were breaking camp at 2:30am to hike and then we'd have to stop way early and get into tents. Was a little heartbreaking as Maine is one of the most gorgeous places ever. Got my tent charged by cow moose on that trip too. That was scary;) |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No--they are never that bad, and not during the day. Yes, you do get biting flies in the summer, but again, never to the level where you have to run screaming. :D I have no fear (well, I should say I have a healthy respect, but not actual fear) of bears or wolves up there, but Moose are aggressive bastards, and there is no way I want one in my site or anywhere near me. If you like paddling and fishing, it is, honest to god, the greatest place on earth. I've never been to Maine, but I have heard from others that there are some spots that are similar--especially the rocky parts of the BWCA. Let me know if you want pictures or want any suggestions on where to go. I seriously love it, and it is an ideal vacation. <3 We are lucky to only live a few hours away--people fly in and drive in from all over, and I am so glad it's this close and we can go pretty much any time. Like you said earlier, there are so few places like that in the world anymore. |

We're about 3 hours south of the twin cities, and the easiest time of year for us to get away would be the third week of August or late September. This year is out(saving vacation to go overseas this winter), but next year is in and BW sounds perfect. I'm cool with wolves, bears I have a healthy respect/fear of. Do you take any of your dogs with you? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My personal favorite is the Lac LaCroix area (up on the BWCA/Quetico border), but there are plusses to most of the regions :-) I'll send you a link to some albums. (I wish Kodak gallery were still arond--I had all my trips organized and captioned and stuff. Shutterfly just threw everything in a big disprganized pile. Grr.) We've done Lac La Croix (via Moose River, EP#16) a bunch. I like that paddle in, b/c despite it being a longer day, you get a variety of scenery and stuff--rivers, swamp/marshy, rocky lakes, etc. LLC does have a motor area, but it;s not noticeable, and the lake itself is HUGE, so you get a little bit of everything you've ever wanted. Plus, it has a number of outstanding sites with...sandy beaches. A total rarity, and so nice. To have both the rocky area and the beach is stellar. Fishing is great--Northerns, Walleye, smalleies, etc. Day trips over to Curtain Falls in Quetico, or to the pictographs in Tiger Bay area, etc. Last fall, we finally hit up the Knife Lake area (home of Dorothy Moulter, the last resident of the area...and the trip to her museum in Ely is TOTALLY worth it, BTW.). It is bear country. They can be persistent, but if you take care, you're fine. We had one last year, and m oved sites, but only b/c we were tired of chucking rocks at him every 5 minutes :p :D But gorgeous, and great fishing. The area destroyed by the Pagami Creek Fire (the numbered lakes, and up that way) was also gorgeous (although it can be heavily travelled...relatively speaking--but in the time frame you are looking at, we've been there and not seen a soul for days). And it's STILL pretty, even after the fire. Kawishiwi River is also very nice. Really, it depends on how far you travel in a day, how many days you want to be in, and what you're looking for (esp. in terms of fishing). We go in for anywhere from 3 days to two weeks, so have had a bit of everything. We do not take our dogs, but MANY people do. Did I know you were this close by? Are you in MN? Or IA? I'll send you some pics in a bit! Edited by mmrocker13 2013-06-11 11:07 AM |

Teejay, do I recognize the Tucson Mountain Park trail in that pic? (Tuson- c is unnecessary) As I ran at dawn there one morning, I kept hearing the rocks chattering as I ran by. Kinda scary. Couldn't imagine copping a squat around there. No. That's out in my hood on the north east side .. Sabino Canyon! Where the mountain lions play! Switch ... the snakes are more scared of me than I am of them. And scorpions .. not really an issue. I've been stung 4 times and all were inside the house, in the bed, in my robe .. etc. But there are cacti, jagged rocks and spiders .. it's hard enough to pull down my pants and squat in plain view without being a tad anxious .. hoping someone doesn't see from the trail above me or come around the corner .. and then having to worry about about critters and bugs and such just makes it worse! Hiking in the mountains or camping .. I have no problems finding a bush to do my bizness in though. No need for a porto-toilet! Is that from the telephone line trail? We did that hike last June when we were in Tucson. Beautiful area and nice trail once you get above the crowds ( we went on saturday ) that were milling about waiting for the next cattle car! I found some nice trails by the JW Starr pass. My girls went into princess mode and hung out by the pool/lazy river, leaving me time to get out and explore on my own. Found an old rock house in the middle of nowhere. I forget the name of the people who lived there, but was amazed that someone could get that much cement and water out in the sticks to build. Awesome scenery. I really loved watching the local fauna and flora. If you take the time to stop, sit still and watch, the place comes to life. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can do it easily while running--but it's not something I PRACTICE. :D It's a race day phenomenon. Otherwise, I just go off to the road/trailside. As for while riding, I have only had to do it once in a race, and it's just one of those things you have to kind of not think about, I guess. Again, though, not something I'm practicing. Really, if you can't go, and you're a short course racer, then either you didn't have to go bad enough...or you can just wait until the run. |

You're a champion! I can't do it on the run. Yes, I've tried:/ Damn it! I want to figure it out before a HIM in July. I'm not "that fast" (OK, I'm not fast at all on the bike), but I don't do porta pottys (especially when it's 90 degrees) and I just don't want to give up the time. I'm a dork like that. What I've noticed on the bike is that if I have to go, it really knocks my power down. Especially on roads with lots of expansion gaps;) You'd think that would just make me go, but, sadly, no. i have high hopes for the standing up strategy. |
