309 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread Not sure what time we will arrive on Friday, so I plan to just do it all on Saturday. Training is going well...I have given up the noseplugs. That was BIG for me. Swim times are coming down. Still riding the trainer due to weather and suffering on my run/walk due to joint issues. Had an MRI on my hip last week for an 11 month chronic tightness/soreness issue. Training doesn't make it worse, it's just always there in an underlying sort of way. Doesn't much matter what the results are...unless I can't crawl, I'm still in. |

Since we're 100 days out, let's put down a marker on how we think we'll do. Based on my current training, I think I'll finish between 5:45-6:00. How about you? Happy Friday! |

Member 169 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I'm thinking 5:55- 6:05 if temp is 75-80 with low humidity. I get real slow as the heat and humidity rise. Last years half's Eagleman hot hot HOT!!! 6:47 - Augusta 78-82 degrees, humidity Okay 6:00. |

Depends on whether you're running a compact (50/34) or standard (53/39). You can get by with a 12-25 on a compact just fine. That might be pushing it with a standard. There are a couple of climbs where you would regret a 39 & 25. I've done 'Cuse twice and used a 53/39 + 12-27 once and 54/39 + 11-28 the other. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I'd like to finish somewhere around 6:00 give or take a few minutes or so assuming we get some decent weather and it's not anything like it was last year. As far as the gearing goes I used a 50/34 and 11/28 combo last year and will be doing the same again this year. |

If its just warm and placid.. - 6:00 and change.. But it won't be .. It's going to be melty hot and crazy humid.. And that second hill on the run will destroy me. No matter what i think or do.. If I can get off the bike with gas in the tank, I'll be good.. But it's going to be painfully humid and hot hot hot.. A least I think so as I sit at my desk on a 29 degree march day. |

I did this race in 2010 and 11 which was when they had it in september. Ever gone swimming at 7am on mid-sept morning in syracuse? it was about 40deg both years. The rest of the day were perfect but i seriously considered polling the the judges to see if I could compete as a woman after I got out the water. As far as gearing I've got a compact w/11-28...unless youre a fairly strong cyclist I would recommend the same. That long climb early in the race is freakin' long and theres 1 short steep climb at about the half way point...save your legs early and you can crush the rest of the course...burn your legs early and you might pay for it. Thats just my advice but Im pretty middle of the pack. ( if you dont already own an 11-28 and dont want to buy 1, or this isnt your A race...you will be fine. But if its an easy fix Id do it) |

If it's going to be hot and humid on race day, I think all of our predictions will prove to be too optimistic...mine definitely will be. I don't think anybody wants a repeat of the heat and humidity like last year, but I'd like some good hot weather in Syracuse before long. We're down to something like 95 days until race day and I'm pretty sure Jamesville Reservoir is still iced over. So, bring on the heat and let's warm-up that water! |

Expert 1099 Broadlands | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread Hey everyone, I'm in for this and not loving the sound of freezing cold water!! on the plus side, it also sounds like there's a good chance the heat and humidity of the day has potential to warm us up after the swim :-) I'm actually really looking forward to this race, my folks are flying in from the UK to watch the four kids at home and my wife is excited to be able to come watch the event, maybe even catch a glimpse of me at some point. (of course, she may be more excited about a long weekend away from the kids, but I'm going with being all excited about triathlon stuff!!) We're staying in downtown Syracuse, Parkview hotel, doesn't look too far and should be ok for a trip to set up Race day. Hope everyone is having fun training and getting in some good solid hours on the bike and on your feet :-)

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread The sell out cutoff is much less than other races. My guess in the 1600 person neighborhood. Unlike Oceanside or Galveston that get close to 3000. |

It's actually about 2400. I guess that Cuse 70.3 + IMLP package really paid off. That nearly doubled the # of participants. Good for this race. I started to get worried that the 1000 participant numbers were going to equate to the contract not being renewed. |

I started to get worried that the 1000 participant numbers were going to equate to the contract not being renewed. I agree that the Syr-LP package paid off for WTC and the local organizers. I hope WTC spreads the love to other races too, perhaps a Timberman 70.3-IMMT package. From a safety standpoint, which is an important issue for the entire tri community, it probably makes sense to have folks train for a 70.3 and then use that training platform for the IM race. I'm sure that the package is primarily designed to make sure races like Syracuse max out, but there other benefits too. Folks training for the 70.3-IM package probably put in more training time are probably more prepared for their IM versus folks who just sign-up for the IM. Perhaps less medical issues at LP this year because many of the athletes will be more prepared? We'll see. I wonder if WTC will try to package-up a 5150, 70.3 and IM race as a way to save their 5150 race initiatives - ok, this may be going too far. In any case, see you all in 59 days! |
