Hmmm....so many of those posted are soooo goood, but I haven't seen a vote yet for

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini

"In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do. He manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan--while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. And he does this on his first try."

I also have a passion for Latin American/Spanish authors translated into English, with my very all-time favorite being

100 years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Wow, You guys are awesome. I just went to Amazon.com and loaded my cart with about 20 books so far (they have amazing deals, like $2.00 and under for used books) So, my credit card is getting a workout. Hangloose- Couldn't find a good deal for Fox in Socks so I'll keep looking I've heard it's a stimulating read

"Tuesdays With Morrie" by Mitch Albom. I think it is a "must read" True story about Mitch's college professer that has ALS and the meetings that Mitch had with him every week. Its not very long, so you would probably need another book. It can be read in a day or two.

I recommend anything by Kurt Vonnegut. "Slaughterhouse Five", "Cats Cradle", and "Slapstick" are all great. Very funny but sometimes you need a sick sense of humor. I am hooked on him right now. Just finished up "Breakfast of Champions" and I am getting ready to start "Mother Night"

Also I would recommend "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" I cant remember the auther write now, but it was an awesome book.

I'm partial to Pat Conroy, specifically Beach Music or Lords of Discipline. Anything by Michael Creighton will make you think a little, and Michael Connolly writes some good murder mysteries (he wrote Blood Work, which was made into a movie). If you're into medical thrillers, Robin Cook is pretty good.

Pat Conroy is my favorite author. If you haven't read anything by him I would suggest starting with "The Prince of Tides," but you really can't go wrong with anything he's written.

"Towing Jehovah" by James Morrow is quite good and thought provoking. No, it's not science fiction.

GREAT! I now have 23 books on the way from Amazon.com, now my biggest dilemma? Which one(s) to take. I am amazed at the diversity that you guys have suggested. I now have my reading material for, at least the next two years. Thanks again for all your suggestions, keep 'em coming. I'm literally making a list of books to add to my library. Great suggestions, great responses, thanks a TON!
