Also for consideration:

You. Worried about a controversial thread? We know better :-)

Seriously...I was. Abortion is sensitive enough, but just discussing this procedure gives me the willies.

After reading part of the article you posted, I think "willies" is the appropriate word...

I'm not hungry for lunch now. Seriously.

If any of you guys are wondering when life begins....just go ask a Mother. When I hear the words,"a fetus isn't viable in the second trimester" it makes my stomach turn.  Again, ask any Mother how they feel about their baby while in the second trimester.  He is wiggling, hiccuping, and kicking our ribs.  That's pretty darn full of life if you ask me. My "fetus" was born prematurely due to an emergency, and he is now a thriving 2 year old.
I admit I am not fully aware of all the details of the laws in question. I just want everyone out there to take a deep breath and realize that until they are pregnant and feel a life growing inside them.......well, enough said.

As a dad, and one who's felt that wiggling, I completely understand. And being a man, it's difficult for me to even express an opinion on the subject.

I just want to say that the pro-lifer who yelled out today in the Supreme Court is an idiot and I hope they throw his butt in jail for a long time.

OK, good night.

Good debate guys.  I would weigh in but I pretty much agree with everything Don wrote.

The baby is killed but is still delivered right?  I'm not sure delivering a dead baby is any less traumatic than delivering a live one but I'm open to hearing medical reason why this is required.  I've never been one to trust the "Well, a doctor said it was necessary so it must be so."  (no offense Derek)

BTW, there are really two issues.  One is 'late term' abortions and the other is partial birth abortion.  A late term abortion is not what is before the SC.  What is being debated is the ban on partial birth abortion.   At least that's my understanding.

I've watched the birth of my two children and seems to me that once the head is out, the trauma of delivery is over.  At least that's when the blood started flowing in my arm again when my wife losened her grip!

Sorry guys, but my knowledge of OB is pretty much limited to what I learned in med school.  I can think of a situation or two where "delivery of the fetus" is the answer to the question on the test, but I can't offer much beyond that.

As for the discussion of "viability", I'll say that 24 weeks is generally considered the cut off for out of the womb viability of a baby.  The odds aren't great with 24 weekers, but they're abysmal at 22-23 weeks and earlier.  It's got nothing to do with in vivo life or viability of a pregnancy.
