Hi Patricia,

Thanks for squeezing me into your group. Sorry it has taken me so long to give info--I've started twice only to be interrupted by work or kids. I live in Meadville, Pennsylvania (35 miles south of Erie). I'm currently doing the Sprint Winter Maintenance--I did the couch-to-tri 20 week 3X2 balanced last spring-summer to gear up for my first triathlon, which I did in early September. I'm not sure why you can't seem my training log--I will try to see if I can figure it out--still learning to work the system! I'm looking forward to exchanging ideas and giving/getting support.

Hi all,

Do people have a preference whether I post to each individually, or just one big long post to all.   Individual posts are shorter and easier to read.  One big long post seems to be more inclusive.  Some groups do individual posts to get the post count up.  I don't care about what others do and their motives, but I do care what you find more helpful.

Try going to the training log, then click on first icon under quick links, make sure that none of the boxes under the "privacy settings" is checked.

My preference is for the longer post. It gives me an idea of where everybody is going.

I agree. I liked the long post with comments to each of us.

Okay--that should do it! Thanks... I think the longer posts are nice, but only if they are just as easy for you.

Great minds think alike.  Long post it is.  Individual posts deleted.

Click on the Logs button under their post.  If you click on mine, you can copy the table under my goals which links to everyone's log, and paste it on to yours.

Patricia - Thanks for the suggestions as far as training plans. I printed out the BT plan. I had never heard of Sleamaker’s Serious Training for Endurance Athletes. Is there a website for his plan or is it just a book.

You're right, I think working out with my friend does provide structure and camaraderie. Knowing I have to meet her 5 a.m. forces me to get up at 4:30. She is obsessed with her training and never misses a workout. My PT's workouts do provide some periodization, but I feel the workouts are geared towards her beginning clients, so I always end up doing extra.

Vineman, Carpinteria and my mid/late October marathon are my "A" races. I'll work more on my training schedule this weekend.

Hi Patricia
Thanks for your suggestions about how I should get started. I am currently trying to get my weight down without getting hurt. I saw that some of you report on body fat...how do you measure this?
Other than that...I feel priviledged to belong to this group, sounds like a nice mix of rokkies like myself and some already much more advanced athletes.
Well, the sun is shining and the air is crisp and clear. Just to make you a bit jealous.
Greetings to all of you
w.

I actually had a weight scale that did a so-so job of measuring it. You had to make sure you were hydrated to be at all accurate. They run from $30 to $100.

Jeff - Which scale do you have? Is it the Tanita brand? I know body fat measurements on these scales is not precise but how accurate is the body weight measurement?

  • If you have a new tape measure, you could download the excel spreadsheet file from the Army and it will do the calculations for you instead of using a scale.

I find that the Army calculations to be pretty accurate.

I'm not sure what kind of scale it was. It was my son's before he left for Afghanistan. I was "keeping" it for him. I never did get around to testing it against a balance scale, but it seemed to be fairly accurate on weight.

    Wolf, Jennifer and Malinda,

Can you set the group up as “friends” on your Log.  There are 2 ways to do this:
    1.      go to you training log, click on the control panel under Quick Links -  , and add everybody as your friends, or
    2.      go to my training log (Logs button under any of my post), copy the table under my goals, picture optional, (highlight by dragging cursor, then right click and choose copy), then go to your own log, click on the same control panel under Quick Links, and paste the table under your goals (right click and chose paste).

Let me know if you need help.  If you choose 1, you can jump to others’ logs at the bottom left hand corner of your log.  If you choose 2, you can jump to the others’ logs by clicking on the links in the table, which will now be appearing under your goals.  I prefer 2 because there are links back to forum and previous posts.

    Hi Patricia,
The name of your group caught my eye and although I can see that you are full, I'm wondering if you would consider accepting me into your group. I am a 46 year old female. I am a true couch potato and have not seriously exercised since my high school days. I have made many attempts in the last few years to start some type of program but inevitably it falls by the wayside due to lack of time or I should be more honest with you and myself due to lack of effort. I came to learn about this program from a friend and I think its something that could really help me. I have gained considerable weight over the last 10 years and as I'm getting older it is really starting to concern me. My motto for 2007 is stop worrying, start doing.

I really look forward to being part of your team and I anxiously await your response.

How can I say no to another Canadian.  I’d love for you to join us; if the group doesn’t mind.  As I was saying, it takes a lot of courage to admit to being overweight and do something.  You’ve taken a giant step in the right direction.  I’d encourage you to set some goals, pick a plan, and start logging your workouts.  As you're coming in late, I’d like to refer you to two posts in particular – group intro and summary and how to set group up as friends

Please join me in welcoming Rose to our group and add her to your log.  By the way, Wolf, have you picked a plan?  I notice I still got a blank in the group intro and summary.

Was lurking on other BT mentor sites and somebody mentioned this tool - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/, calculates distance of your route.  Really cool.

I have used the tool before and it is great. Google Earth is another application that I use to measure distances.
