Although I am not a medic or an EMT...used to be an office manager for a EMT/Paramedic School and I may have some very recent ACLS, ALS, BTLS...books...plus I have a few "Pass Paramedic School" VHS tapes that would be very helpful if you are an EMT and looking to become a paramedic - has lots of great information. Let me know if you are looking for any books/or tapes/cds. I would only ask that you refund my shipping costs...or I like to wine...I mean I like red wine ).

I too am very fired up and look forward to getting whipped into shape! Today was a day off...but I will be out for an early morning run and hoping to hit a spin class tomorrow evening. I am going to need much help in the swim category. So and suggestions will gladly be accepted. Im thinking of getting a swim coach, as this area is where I feel I need MUCH help.

Eric - thanks for allowing me into your group. I am going to need your help in setting up a weekly schedule so that I do not overdo...let me know what information you need from me.
Thanks...
)

My two biggest weaknesses. Just two? First I would have to say endurance. I am so tired after I finish my runs (usually only 3 miles or so) or finish riding or spining.(only about 10 miles) I really need help working on building my endurance for longer distances. Second, I guess I would have to say open water swimming. When I started training in July, I could not swim 50y in a pool. I am up to about 1750y per swim. But that is in the pool. I get into the ocean and it is like I forget what to do. I know that is from lack of experience in the ocean, but swimming in the ocean is intimidating.
One strength I have is great family support. Even though my hubby has a crazy work schedule and I have to do most of my training while the kids are in preschool or I push them in the jogger. He is very supportive. I will have to work on a second strength.

December goals

Splash through the Silly Season December Swim Challenge. Swim 12000y for the month
Abs and Push Up's Challenge 10 push ups, 100 crunches per day

January goals

Runs working on staying in zone 2. See if there is a noticable difference.
Longer runs. Extend runs to four then five miles. Sort of a pain, pushing the jogger on the hilly running paths.

Spinning or riding with higher cadence, also trying to stay in zone 2.

Keep up with 2x week swimming. It is an outdoor pool. I am in San Diego, but it still gets chilly. Work on getting to the Masters Team practice as much as possible. It is at 530am, which is really, really early. Only doable some Thurs. or Fri. mornings with schedule.

Pilates or Yoga twice, if they work with schedule.

I will also check out the January challenge. I will probably try it too.

That seems like a lot

Hey Eric

Kind of slow with this computer stuff. Will need some instruction on e posting and making a friends list, I think I have the other items covered but will ask for help if needed.

Mike,

If you go into your control panel, you should find a tab for friends. You can just add us there or...you can copy the table that D created and just paste it into your goals tab in the control panel.  Click on any of the names in the table and it will take you right to that person's blog.

Since I'm supposed to be setting a good example, let me turn in my homework--

Strengths-
Bike Power
Dedication to pursuing this sport

Weakness-
Run-both speed and endurance
Edit:  Forgot weakness #2
Nutrition--haven't been willing to trade off taste for overall wt loss/speed

Goals for January:
Swim at least 4500 yds each week
At least 2 strength workouts each week-focus on CORE and legs
Run at least 40 miles

Ok, sorry I didn't get to post yesterday, woke up with a nasty cold and I'm drugged up enough now!! Slept most of the day to try to kick it!!
Goals for January: Follow the couch to 5k program adding run time if I can.
Lose 10 pounds by the end of the month.

Strengths: Swimming, I'm not planning on adding that into the mix until March.

Weaknesses: Running or lack there of!!! Planning fixing this through sheer determination. I'm starting the couch to 5k program on Saturday.
Flexibility in the back and hips is a problem as well. I need to try and stretch everyday and work on the core. I hold my stress in my low back. Since I don't see work getting less stressful I need to work on countering it through exercise and relaxation techniques.
Again, glad to be part of the group!!! Have a great Tuesday everybody!!! Chris

My turn to post

My strengths:
-my motivation: no matter what goes wrong...I always want to do better and keep going

-Swimming: even though I don't practice very much I am fast in the water and have a pretty good endurance...my bet is I could get better if I spend more time in the pool

My weaknesses:

-keeping to a schedule: I am all the good intentions to stick to what I say I will do and I just don't do it as much as I should

-Running: with having ITBS last spring and just not being generally good at it both liking it and having endurance...it is my weakest link

Jan Goals:

-Swim 15000 yds during the month

-Stick 90% of the time to scheduled plan

-Eat better!!

Wow, that's some AMAZING swim progress! In five months, you've gone from less than 50y to 1750y? WOW! That's really fantastic!

You're in CA, so I'm thinking that "your ocean" isn't like "my ocean." (Mine is pretty calm, and warm. Yay for the East Coast!)

Could you maybe find someplace like a lake to start in? That might give you more of an open water feel, than a 25y pool? But it would be a lot calmer than the ocean, so you wouldn't have to contend with waves..... Or do you know any other BTers? There seem to be quite a few from the San Diego area. Maybe they could go with you for an ocean swim?... Just a few thoughts, anyway.

I wish there was a master's swim program around here. No such luck though! Although, if it was at 5:30AM, um.... Well, I'm not quite that motivated. I'm not a happy morning person! LOL

Here's my homework!

Friends list has been updated. Workouts are being logged.

I've visited some of our logs. Not all yet, but I'm working on it. Some people's workouts are pretty impressive. And some of the goals are really great.

Planned races - none yet.

Strengths:
1. Swimming
2. Consistency - I don't always do a LOT each day, but I try to do SOMETHING on MOST days. In other words, I try to have lots of pink boxes on my training log. Sometimes, it's a swim. Sometimes, it's a bike ride. But the way I see it, a pink box is a good thing.

Weaknesses:
1. Running. My technique is bad. It makes my knees hurt. And I can't run very far. (Plus, I go about the same speed as a turtle.)
2. No bike. I've been doing my biking on a stationary bike.

Three goals for January:
1. Swimming. Improve my technique so I stop hurting my shoulder. Break my current personal bests. The exact yardage will depend upon how my shoulder is doing. (Especially since this month's challenge is a swim challenge, so I've been pushing it.)
2. Biking. 100 miles on the stationary bike.
3. Participate in the January Challenge. (So this goal will be set based upon whatever the challenge involves.)

The bay is a lot calmer than the ocean. Most of the sprint tri's are in the bay. There is even a tri club here that has weekly ocean or bay swims. It is just that my schedule does not seem to work out so I can attend. It is colder here now. It is winter ya know. Only about 65 today. I am not feeling the ows this time of year. I will have to get on it more in the spring. Most of, if not all, the lakes around here are fishing only type lakes. No swimming allowed.

Thanks for the encouragement, Dee.

Pam - This month's challenge is a SWIM challenge. We're having a great time. Lots of smack talk, and lots of swimming.

To sign up for the challenges, you just declare your goal.... The challenge organizer assigns you to a team.... The month starts, and off you go! Being in a team means that you support the team, and they in turn, support you. (Or light a fire under you, if that's what's needed!) This month, I'm the team captain of the Avenging Angels, which I am happy to brag, is currently in FIRST PLACE! (Go Angels!)

Amy - Heh, the January one isn't up yet because no one has volunteered to organize it yet.... Interested being the Challenge Organizer? LOL

(I ran the November one. It was a lot of work, but it was fun, too. It does wonders for your post count, too.)

Better Late then Never!

Strengths:

Biking - had a motorcycle at my parents cabin that I rode like crazy...raced mountain bikes for five years straight (almost every weekend) Raced Sport Cross Country and Expert Downhill...Uphill was only raced if it was a point race! Have won many gold medals and have great endurance.

Weakness:

Running - run at a toads pace.

Swimming - not a lap swimmer - so I feel sorry for anyone that is in the pool when I attempt to swim...hoping to stay inside the ropes! ;o)

Biking - I am terrified of riding a road bike next to cars. So, most of my riding is off road and on the dirt...need road riding experience and miles!

Goals for January:

Run four times a week...each time at least 30 minutes

Swim three times a week (LAPS)...20 minutes each visit

Bike four days a week ON THE ROAD!...each time 20 miles+

LONGTERM GOAL....Compete in a Sprint by mid 2008 - non competitively just looking for a finish! and...possible Ironman Florida in 2010 or 2011.

<-- Current post count: 3253.
<-- Post count before organizing the Nov Challenge: around 250.

Yay for post counts! (Although this post probably constitutes post padding. LOL)

I've really enjoyed the Challenges though. They're great for meeting people, and for keeping me focused and motivated.

(Although, I do have sleep deprivation from playing on BT too late at night.)

I was not trying to be a smart a$$ about Jan. not being up yet. It is only the 11th I am on the site enough to organize, but my computer skills are not up to par. And I am on a mac and I have issues with compatibility. Spread sheets, and that sort of stuff, do not work.

Heh, no - I didn't think you were being "smart." It's kind of a joke between some of us. We keep trying to convince one another to run another challenge.

It was a lot of fun running the November challenge, but it did take a LOT of time.

A few of us were discussing the January challenge. It *may* be biking, or an all-around tri challenge (where you get points for biking, swimming and running).... But that was as far as we got with it.

My work schedule is going to be hectic in January. Otherwise, I'd volunteer to organize it. I may do it anyway, if no one else jumps in. (Shh - don't tell people that though. LOL)

Found a great pool right around the corner...and after talking to a few friends that swim there....they said it is a great pool...very seldomly crowded and just remodeled less then a year ago.

Thanks for any assistance...going for a short run right now...feeling pretty good after yesterdays run...my legs are beginning to not be as sore in between runs...YEAH!
