Did the IM FL bike course on Saturday and felt ok. Had some mental struggles around mile 88, other than that, I made it within the time I was looking for. Took a rest day Sunday and then did a 13 mile run today. Bike trainer session tomorrow morning.

Just coming off a good weekend of training. 80 mile ride on Saturday, 18 mile run Sunday, and 2 mile swim today. Things are coming along well.

Anyone know if we are going to be able to get practice swims on the course the week prior to the race?

Getting nervous and excited at the same time. Hope everyone stays healthy and happy.

The have the course set up and you will definitely get a chance to do the swim a few days before the race

I did the Olympic tri in montauk in june.  Great venue. The swim and ride is great.  Be ready for the run if you have not been there.  The course is very hilly.  I believe they are going to loop the olympic course twice.  Make sure you save some for the run it is tough.

Noticed you did the bike course. Are you planning any open water swims at Panama City before the big day? I'm looking to join a group who may be doing the swim between now and November.

Am planning to do the South Carolina Half on Oct. 4th, and a couple of organized Century rides - other than that, just stick to the plan!

Cheers,

I am doing the Alabama Coastal Olympic Distance on 9-19-09. The swim will be in the Gulf but only 1/3 mile distance(?) Not sure of the Olympic distance. Doing a Century ride in Sept and Oct. My last Century will be 10-3-09 in Ocean Springs, MS. Other than that, also sticking to the script.

You all look as though you're ready!  I just wanted to give you an update on the roadways here in PCB.  Was on 388 yesterday and, even though they are repaving, it is rocky.  They have "soft shoulders" that consist of rock and dirt.  The rocks are in the roadway.  Hopefully, they will have this completed by the time the IM comes around.  If not, be on the lookout for debris.

Also, they are repaving 79.  Lots of road work in progress...

Keep up the good work and I'll keep an eye on the roads...

thanks for the update Volsfan! Group, this is my first IM, I am considering changing into cycling shorts at T1 and running shorts at T2. Tri suit shorts are ok for HIM distance, but cycling specific chamois are just more comfortable for me on the long rides. I don't mind giving up a little time for comfort- do most mid/back of the pack folks do this? Bad Idea?? any thoughts?? thanks for any input!

I feel your pain.  Every single long bike ride I have had has been a wet one and not just a drizzle.  I am so tired of biking in the rain and then having to go home and try to clean all the mud and stuff off my bike.  I am definitely well trained for adverse weather conditions.  The funny part is that Atlanta has been in a severe drought for years and the year that I pick for the ironman we have record rainfall.  Good luck, I will keep my fingers crossed for better weather.

Had an interesting revelation today.  I finally went out and bought some jammers to swim in and ditched the trunks.  I had no idea how big a difference this would make.  My swim time dropped by an average of 20 seconds per 50 yards.  It was amazing how easily and quickly I cut through the water.  In addition it felt like someone was lifting my hips which made swimming much less tiring.  I guess my old swimsuit was acting as a parachute.  I can't wait to try out the wetsuit next month! 73 days.  10 1/2 weeks. Happy training!

I normally would just ride thru it but today I think I lost it. It was raining so hard and the wind blowing that I turned around and went home. I'm hoping this weekend I can get a nice long ride and kind of make up for it. It did not help that I had a root canal today also.

P.S. its still lightly raining outside

I have been swimming in your regular old baggy swim shorts.  Now I am using the jammers which if I have the terminology correct are the knee length speedo style swimsuit.  Yes the old swimsuit had some serious drag but I didn't know any better because I have never been swimming for speed.  Plus as a borderline clydesdale (depending on the day) it is a bit intimidating putting on the jammers.  Luckily I live in one of the communities that was devestated by the housing crash so the neighbor pool is empty most days.  I am not quite cool enough to run in the Chuck Taylors although I did wear them alot in the 80's  I guess I will just have to stick to my Brooks Adrenaline for now.

I am off for an 80 mile bike/8 mile run.  Have a wonderful thursday everyone.

I have a question about the swim....I know we get out of water after first loop,

Do they provide drinks on beach between the loops? If yes, what?

Going on memory..think it's just water.  You can keep a Gu tucked in your wetsuit sleeve to take in between the loops if you want...and the fresh water tastes good to wash out the salt!!

As far a training goes- I like training with baggy shorts for the extra drag. I usually wear a couple pair of drag shorts when I swim- it makes me work a little harder. On race day I think it pays off.

Unbelievable the amount of "element training" in the last few weeks. Tired of the rain and definitely tired of the bike trainer and/or treadmill.

I am going back to Panama City for Labor Day weekend. We have friends who own a condo at the Boardwalk (the host hotel/condo complex) and I would like to ride and run the course again over the long weekend...and its my birthday so they are going to have a little party for me.

I want to try out my new wetsuit in the ocean so sometime between Wednesday Sept 2 and Monday Sept 7, I should be doing some sort of swim out there
