Or have you still got your first race in 3 wks Kevin?  Did you do the entire course as prep? That's awesome. I'm going to do my next race course - the bike and the run - two weeks before the race.  Swim will be a bit awkward with the boat traffic.

Well the boat traffic might help you to prepare for navigating during the swim.  Nothing helps you remember to spot like the potential to get chopped up or run over by a boat.

I have my race on July 11th. I'm completely freaked out... I am not worried about the run at all and the bike isn't going to be too bad. The swim on the other hand... I went for my first OWS last week and pretty much had a panic attack. I was completely freaked out. Not completely sure why, though I think part of it has to do with being able to see what is underneath me. I started swimming so fast that I completely tired myself out in 10 mins.
Its been raining here in maine for pretty much every day for the past 4 weeks. It is sucking bad.

Don't worry about the freak out. I grew up swimming in the harbour (jellyfish and stingrays were the norm) and had a mini-panic in the canal on Sunday during my warm-up. It was surreal. As it started to happen I was like "wow, I'm having a panic attack - this really happens". But I just let myself enjoy the buoyancy of the wetsuit and told myself to just do what I knew to do and let myself go through the motions. It's also important to pace yourself to the first buoy. There's a good article about the swim and panicking in Triathlete magazine this month, which I read the night before. And another good article on race day jitters and how to handl them.

Yep, I still have my first one to do yet, which is on the 18th.  I did a course preview this past weekend.  While there were no swim buoys in the water, we estimated the distance by time.  After that, we biked and ran the actual course.  We kept near the shore, so the boat traffic was minimal, with an exception for a dock or floating dock in the water.

Gave me a good idea of what I've gotten myself into.

I realize I have no idea. Too bad I didn't think about it earlier, I could have went to a couple local tris and watched, listened and learned.

No, I didn't mean that in a bad way. You are going to be so jacked on race day. I love watching/helping/cheering first timers, it's just such a damned blast!!

Hi guys,
Went for a run last night for 36 mins. Felt ok - just a bit tired at the end of it all. All the swimming pools are still closed from the Toronto City strike. And that means the lake is not being tested for OWS.

I feel silly asking this, because I feel like I should know this answer... but, what should a taper week look like? Less intensity ? less time training? I have my 1st tri coming up next Saturday. thanks

The taper week on my sprint training plan had me only do three 15 minute workouts the week before my tri - one for each sport. I really felt like I was "over-tapering" and sort of freaked out the day before the race that I should have been working out more. In the end, I was very rested though!

I would say less time and less intensity, although the perfect balance escapes me!

My taper was very unintentional.  I had family coming in over the weekend, and took a trip to ATL for a Yankee game as well.  So I just had to junk a bunch of workouts to get the house clean and such.

Yeah, not so much

She danced well, but didn't place very well. Weird judging this year.

That's too bad.

Weird judging always makes you just feel extra crappy.  At least in my opinion.

that sucks john. i'm sorry to hear that they were funky on their judging, that must be pretty frustrating

i felt like i was in the movie caddyshack today on my bike ride. I was riding on a road that winds through a golf course and there was a cute fuzzy gopher sitting in the road, a few feet away from the grass. I had a car coming the other direction so I decided to go between the gopher and the grass. i guess the gopher didn't like it at all. he growled and lunged at me! Luckily i was about 2 ft away from him and he came about a foot from getting me. that was a learning experience for me.

Ok, so there is a brand new never-ridden Kestrel RT700 for sale on my local CL, asking $700. The bike looks beautiful. Reviews are glowing - although I would need to upgrade the tires - but it retailed ~$4K in 2007.

So why would someone have one brand new in 2009 and why would they only want $700 for it? I'm going to go see it, but I don't know what I'm getting into here.

Def worth a look. Take a list of the components it would of come with and check that it hasn't been downgraded on components for sale. It may still be worth it but at least you will know if you are getting a $4k bike for $700 or a $700 bike for $700.

Not sure what area you are in, do you have a link to the ad?

The one that I found was posted on Jun 13, and was $3000 for the RT700. I'm guessing that he made a mistake and put 700 in the price by mistake, since that is also the model #.

Oh dear, the bike is a scam. I got an email back asking for all my information so that he could open a MoneyBookers case since he left them the bike in Vancouver while he is in Spain. *sigh* I knew it was too good to be true!
