Morning folks.   I am doing a long ride on Friday.  Any suggestions for me on what to eat before, during and after?  It will be my longest ride to date.

I don't know, is it in the morning or afternoon?
If it is in the morning I would eat scrambled eggs on whole grain toast/bread, orange juice and a banana before, bring Gatorade and a Lara bar during and then a cheeseburger after. Or maybe grilled chicken, vegetables and rice after.

After the fog moves on. It's going to be a lovely day but that usually means a foggy morning here.  I was told Steel Cut Oats with fruit is a good option in the am and maybe a PB&J mid ride. I usually stop at a Tullys somewhere along the ride for something hot to drink.

Can't advise on the long ride, as my longest ride ever has been 35 minutes on the rollers -_-

But I have a stupid story for you guys. I swam an honest-to-dog 6x50 yesterday, matching the longest distance I've ever gone in one DAY. My body wasn't as happy as I was about it afterwards, but it quieted down to vague fatigue after an hour or so.

So, later that afternoon, sitting at work, I sneezed, and had this sudden, short, but STABBING pain in my abs on the lower left side! Surprised, I sat up a little straighter. STAB again.

Somehow I managed to PULL A MUSCLE IN MY ABS. By SNEEZING!

It was a little annoying the rest of the day because it stabbed anytime I bent at the waist, but it was more funny than anything. It finally went away this morning.

Oh, and a big manatee flipper hug for everyone. I love this group. I get excited reading about the new things you've done. I wanna be like you guys when I grow up!

Steel cut oats you might want to try for a shorter ride first ... just sayin'. What kind of brekkie have you had on long rides and runs so far?

I'm kind of a garbage can, before a long run I've seriously eaten half-power bars I found in my car that I remember sharing with a dog the week before ... but ... I have learned the hard way NOT TOO MUCH FIBER before long training or races. That's just me. Others it works fine for. But oatmeal and fruit (dep/up which fruit) is a lot of fiber to dump into your system if you're not used to having it before going long.

So. White bread with PB/J or honey works well for me, or a not-too-fibery cereal with milk (not that I'm ever that prepared), or a PowerBar, or ... leftover pizza. Careful on the dairy, too, though unless you're used to it.

I'm sick, I'll just stuff a PB/J into a baggie into my jersey pocket, but it's definitely easier to carry Gu or Blox ... or stick a Power Bar on your handlebars.

I'm sorry, but that is hi-larious. Especially after so much exertion on the swim. And for that--WELL DONE!!! It's SO great when you hit milestones! (Yardstones? Yardfloats?)

Lynne: Do you usually eat oats in the morning? If I haven't done it for a while it upsets my stomach and I need to use the bathroom a lot. So for me that is not a good way to start a long bike ride.

I'm usually fine if I eat it as a second breakfast, but not first thing in the morning.

Oh Rebecca, so sorry about your pulled muscle.  But I agree with Yanti, it is *kinda* funny.  Congrats on your swim -- you're getting there!  It's mostly just repetition and continuing to push a little more each time.  My spin instructor last week put it this way:  Ever seen the movie Shawshank Redemption?  How they chipped away, and chipped away, and chipped away until they acheived their goal?  Everytime you push yourself even a little more than you did before, you are chipping away and one step closer to your goal.

Lynne, I am so very confused about nutrition, I don't know what to say at all.  One of my Lenten promises to myself is to be really villigant about keeping a food diary -- I am really hoping to bring the data to a nutitionist for help, in losing weight and getting better on track.  Here's hoping...

Had a late start this morning, but did squeeze in a short run, yay me.  Better than naught.  Surprisingly eager to get into the pool tomorrow -- hope it's warm enough!

I can only offer nutrition wise what works for me. I usually have a piece of whole wheat toast with this better 'n' peanut butter stuff on it (tastes like peanut butter but lower in fat) and either some sliced strawberries or sugar free fruit spread and sometimes will put banana slices. If I'm feeling festive I'll add a sprinkle of granola or Grape Nuts Trail mix cereal. I might also have a few almonds or walnuts and the white only of a hard boiled egg. During a ride I'll have PB/J or a cliff peanut butter and chocolate bar or a portion of it and sometimes cliff blocks. A friend of mine eats trail mix and pretzels on long rides. Plus, of course, hydration. Water or something with electrolytes. If you're watching calories, as many of us are, remember not to go too overboard on the sugary drinks. Hope that might help some.

And, sorry about your pulled muscle. I did that during morning sickness while pregnant, pull an intracostal (I think that's what it was) muscle and it hurt like hell to laugh, sneeze, cough or take care of my morning sickness which is what caused the whole thing. I think I ended up taping my ribs with an ace bandage. Good swim though.

Just got back from the gym, I did a 12,3 mile bike ride. It felt good. Listened to a book in my mp3-player at the same time. That was good to make time fly.

This morning I did 20 consecutive push-ups as an initial test for one hundred push-ups traningprogram that I'm starting next week.
It's going to take 6 weeks of hard traning and then you are supposed to be able to do 100 push-ups. I'll give it my best. Here is the website if any of you are interested: http://hundredpushups.com/

Yay for your hip and legs!

P.S. -- sorry if I sounded like I was debilitated by the pulled muscle! I just thought it was funny...

hi everyone

one and a bit days till my tri.... feeling quite nervous really
my back is improving and I can run and swim okay, but haven't been on the bike all week..  still feels a bit like triathlons are something someone else would do..  I still don't really feel fit, although I know i can easily do at least twice the distance in all the disciplines individually, I've practiced open water swimming and transitions and done some bricks...  I even own a pair of tri shorts now!

To think in September I couldn't run for 30 seconds though... and now I can

wish me luck..

I swam laps today at the YMCA in a 25 m pool. There was this guy in the next lane, he swam forward crawl and I started to compete with him, I did breast strokes and I managed to not only keep up with him for the last 600 m but to actually beat him a couple of times.
Totally I swam for 1150 m in 30 min.

If I can only learn the crawl, I think I will be really fast.

Hi everybody!

I was away for a couple days on a business trip and this has been my first chance to check in. Sales seminars make me want to consider an exciting career in small engine repair.

Mia - glad to hear you had a good ride and felt good on your run! I'm pretty sure I couldn't do 100 pushups. Now that I've written that I'm feeling like I need to do something about that.....

Melyssa - Congrats on your first place swim, no need for a disclaimer! GOOD LUCK IN YOUR RACE! Can't wait to hear how it goes.

I got home last night and my wife left for Florida this morning. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do for five days. Good thing the Olympics are on.....

Have a good weekend!

It went great!!!  The OWS training definitely paid off as I surprised myself (and my coach, and my friends) as I was earlyish out of the water, had a bit of a drama in first transition trying to get my top on (after all that training, I should've concentrated on learning how to get dressed!)  Bike was average, reflecting that I haven't spent enough time on it, and my back still a bit doubtful, got passed by a few people who were quicker up the hills.  First ten minutes in the run was hard, got a bit of the stitch which i haven't had for months, but I remembered that it gets better, and it did!  I felt slow though, but not much slower than everyone else fortunately.  The average time for the race is usually 1 hour 11, so I was aiming for 1 hour 15.  So I am very happy with just under 65 minutes

The worst part was that it was all over by 9.30am, and I had to come home and spend all day kid wrangling when I'd much rather have put my feet up and had a rest..

Hope everyone  has had a fab weekend.  I'll post pictures when i get them
